failing the MOT for the first time

Now heres some intersting reading :-

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/opensecrets/

Lists the failure rate of modern cars undergoing their first MOT. Needless to say cars of oriental origin are less likely to fail than French cars or Vauxhalls.

Further down the page is a similar list for cars built in 1997 -again it's the same story.

intresting that, quiet surprised at the Rover as at that time would of been under honda wouldnt it??..

I think with the ten year old cars its going to be more down to the typical owner profile of each car as then poor maintenance would clearly outweigh any manufacturing defect. Its more likely that people with older cars would put them through the test expecting them to fail on a few bits and pieces so its hardly going to come as a shock that up to 50% fail.Nearly a third of a 3 year old model failing though is pretty shocking and would give weight to havign an MOT after two years. I suppose the vans are more likely to have been thrashed/overloaded and generally done more miles than a Renault Megane though.

Intersting indeed - delighted to see that on the new in 1997 table, the Xantia comes in the top half.It also interests me to see that Peugeots appear to be worse than Citroëns despite them using a high number of the same parts and built in some of the same factories.Delighted to see that the MINI came in in the lower half but I wonder how much of this is weighted up against mileage at the time of the fails and the type of use the vehicle gets - I mean I'd imagine a Transit Connect has a much harder life than a Polo?

I've been digging through the 1200 page PDF... I like this document!1971 MOSKVICH 427 - - - Failure Rate: 100% - - - Vehicles Tested: 1Poor guy

Still waiting for the sodding thing to download!I reckon there should be annual tests from new, I don't think the car being newly-built is a strong enough reason to give them a three year exemption. The main thing is that I hate the idea of sales rep cars being able to rack up a daft mileage and still not require the tyres and brakes be checked. Some must be pretty knackered by the time the test is due!

Wouldn't this make quite a good listing of number of each cars left on the road? If you define 'on the road' as 'taken for an MoT every year' which is pretty accurate, rules out all the SORNed stuff that'll never see a road again.

One problem... they seem to be denying the existance of morris, and alot of shite worthy companies even though moskvitch made it in. BTW the Autoshiter with the MG Express, it appears there aren't that many left... m0rris

fascinating and a great way to check numbers of cars on roads - don't believe dates of manufacture of some of them though! ;)

ohh defo, would be more than afew of those been sat on a dealership for a year poss more

There weren't that many to start with, around 300.

some of them seem to have been at the dealers three years before they were even made!

Some interesting reading, the figures definitely don't include some obscure vehicles though (especially older ones). Here's some MOT pass figures for the OJC crowd, I've only looked at "old" model names as stuff like the Accord includes newer ones and I can't be bothered picking through a load of data which in a lot of cases will be wrong anyway.Daihatsu Charmant: 15Daihatsu Domino: 81Honda Quintet: 3Hyundai Stellar: 49Isuzu Piazza: 25Mazda 929: 17Mazda Montrose: 1Mitsubishi Cordia: 5Mitsubishi Sapporo: 25Mitsubishi Starion: 74Nissan 280C: 3Nissan 280ZX: 57Nissan 300C: 63Nissan Bluebird: 5274Nissan Cherry: 332Nissan Laurel: 148Nissan Stanza: 73Nissan Violet: 12Subaru 1.8L: 61Subaru 1600: 2Subaru 1800: 39Subaru MV Pickup: 516Subaru XT: 3Suzuki SC100: 34Toyota Cressida: 22Toyota Crown: 36Toyota Tercel: 89Nice to know that at least 3 Quintets passed their test in 2007. No Tredias passed though, just 4 failures, though I suspect a lot of the old Mitsubishis are under Colt and not shown on that document as I couldn't find any evidence of 70s Sigmas and there's certainly a few of them with a test on. I'll do a bigger thread on OJC later I think!

... and here for the MG-Rover bunch:

Fascinating stuff. As mentioned before, it does help construct a basic idea on surviving car numbers - Lots of surprises, which made me swear out loud at work - which gave the impression that I was actually working. Cheers BBC!

more fail than pass, proper autoshite

Hang on. Should you not at least subtract a proportion of the failures from the pass list as surely many that failed may then also show up as a pass after some work and are hence on the spreadsheet twice?

Posted

The majority of the cars at the top are of Spanish origin I noticed!Transit can be blamed for amount of miles and general neglect these vehicles get?

Posted

Yeah, definitely don't take it as a list of numbers of cars! There could be repeated fails for some cars (possibly followed by a pass), or the same car could go in for MOT twice within the year ("I'll throw in 12 months test, mate").It's the year thing that I don't get, a lot of them are cut off at a certain year, even if they went back further. There's no 1983 Daihatsu Charmants for example, but I'm fairly sure mine went for a test then!Still interesting reading, it's nice to know that 49 test certificates were printed off for Stellars (seeing as I haven't seen one for yonks now).

Hmm I was thinking that too. As in 2007, twelve Sao Penzas rolled up at MOT stations.......

20,000 Ford sierras passed their MOT in 2007. Pretty impressive. For FSO there is 6 125p models.42 Caro4 Polonez! Bloody hell.2 Lada 1200s1 1300147 Nivas235 RivasAnd 170 Samaras. Its also pretty fun looking at the Supercars which failed, it seems alot fail for brakes. Some are weirdly vague though, we have eighties registered LDV 200s and 90s registered Sherpas.....

Ive discovered cars Ive not heard of before on this list. For example, the Maserati Kyalami. The 205 also had more fails than passes, 35,000 failed whilst 33,000 passed.415 505s passed. There is apparently more 605s here now, havent seen one for ages still though.Hold on, 51 Renault 5s? Hmmm.........Oh no wait its actually more like 7,500 but they put it in twice. And for all the actual Rover models, you have, for example Rover 800. But then it also lists the 825, 827 etc etc4 Tagoras passed! And 10 Viceroys. Does Talbot Matra count as the Rancho?

yes same vehicle but had its name changed when companys merged/purchased/sold during the chrysler era

It's not complete though. As I pointed out over on the VZI thread, there's no VW Type 3s, no Trekkers, Brasilias.... all of which I know there are examples of on the road right now. Some Beetles also get listed as "2-axle right body" or something which isn't in the list.

Unless you can tell what cars have actually failed for, I think a lot of the new car stats are just a case of lies, damn lies & statistics - anything with more than 60k / 3 year warranty - e.g. Kia, probably won't show as a fail 'cos the dealer will fix it prior to testing it. Other dealers who offer decent service will call in the cars for a service whilst still under warranty, fix anything mechanical that could fail the MOT under warranty, and then issue the MOT afterwards.Anything that tends to be bought privately is likely to get any repair work in the first 3 years done under warranty as it won't go over the mileage limit, whereas fleet cars will often tick over the mileage limit well beforehand and face their first MOT out of warranty, just prior to being binned off to car supermarket or auction...Just my suspisions - my missus works for a large company owning dealerships for several manufacturers - & based on that, I'll probably never buy a new car or anything new enough to need dealer servicing!
