pogweasel Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I find the current rash of "CASH 4 GOLD" enterprises on TV aimed squarely at crims and thickies abhorrent, however the latest one made me LOL heartily: GOLDBUYERMAN features a fictional and clearly rubbish gold-purchasing superhero, who is seen driving in a Mk2 Capri, in gold obv, with brown vinyl roof. Winner! The whole ad is really rubbish and so tongue in cheek I wondered if it was real (it appears to be) or a cats-for-gold type spoof.
brammy777 Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 Haha Ive not seen that, but ill keep my eyes open. These cash for gold things are utter crap, apparently (so I hear) they give you something like 50p an ounce, when the market value is over 20 times more.
Mr Lobster Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 Another way to make money out of the terminally stupid. They think they are getting a good deal when they'd be better off getting rid of their unwanted / stolen gold at a local jeweller who would pay something more like the going rate. Anyway, gives an excuse to repost this which seems a much better scheme to me
Richard Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 Another one that's doing the rounds just now is Envirofone, who suggest that your old phone might be worth hundreds. As it happens I've just replaced my phone so I checked my old one on their site for a laugh. £2.12.

I sent off a broken old phone and got £12 odd. Bargain! It was about 3 years old too.Apparently they all end up in Africa where they dont have a "land line" system. Theyre steadily building up a mobile network and need cheap handsets. Its a bit like exporting old knackered jap cars, except with phones.
FredTransit Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 What I can't get over about these cash4gold ads is they send you a nice clearly marked envelope so the dishonest members of the post office staff can find it easily. Wonder how much of it doesn't make it to get valued?
Mr_Bo11ox Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Ha ha, so true. THIS ENVELOPE CONTAINS GOLD WHICH THE OWNER HOPES TO SELL FOR CASH - PLEASE DO NOT STEAL OR LOSE UNDER ANY CICRUMSTANCES' fuggin tossers.
FredTransit Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I would like to see how much they would pay out if it did go missing, cos you are not gonna have proof of how much you put in the envelope.....
Pillock Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 They use business reply services, so utterly uninsured and untracable.Envirophone/Mazumamobile are slightly less offensive but you've got to have a fairly modern handset to profit. I enquired about my N85 that was only two months old, they'd give me £125. I got £150 with no effort at all with an advert on VZi though, they were going for £180 on eBay and CEX would have given me £147 over the counter. My GF's just ordered an iPhone, I looked to see how much they'd give for her two year old Samsung F700... £25. Might as well keep it as a spare for that....
trigger Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I've been using Envirophone for a few years now and I've done quite well out them. When i put my 3 month old Nokia N95 in the washing machine and killed it i just waited 4 months then claimed of my house insurance (I upgraded my policy to cover the phone after my epic error), When the insurnace company sent me a £400+ cheque for a replacement new phone, I tried the new battery on my old dead phone and it amazingly powered up but the screen was just the white screen of death so i just got a cheap battery of eBay and popped the phone in the post to Envirophone and got £150 back in Argos vouchers.Another time was some old mobile my dad found in a farm track, It wouldn't even power up but i posted it to them and got £25 in Argos vouchers.
Cavcraft Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Is it free postage? Only I'm thinking some sort of cat shit wrapped in sellophane with a few hefty stones off your drive might be the order of the day if they have pissed anyone enough suitably?
CortinaDave Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Well I sent my old N95 8GB off to mazuma last week and they paid up £112 and I had the cheque in 48 hours. the phone worked but the camera was knackered and there was water damage after i dropped it in the bath.. so it seemed like a good deal to me. I wonder if some bloke in Botswana or wherever the hell they send them is currently pissed off to discover his new phone has a broken camera I have another nokia lying about that is a couple of years old now and they valued it at a tenner... not worth the hassle so I'm keeping that in case my current phone goes tits up. I would use them again though!
Guest Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 I bought one of those Google G1 OMG SMARTBRICKS off this lad at work who's shite with money.Envirosatsumacatshitforgold offered me 65 climate change pounds for it. As I paid £50 this clearly wasn't enough. So I luzzed it on eBay and was given £110 for it by some loser in Basingstoke. He thinks I'm great because I miscalculated the postage charge and refunded him the excess.
Justin Case Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 I am mulling over the offer from Mazuma. Should I accept the cheque for £1.00 or the £1.10 Argos Voucher
pogweasel Posted January 6, 2010 Author Posted January 6, 2010 Mrs_pog bought me a brand-new phone a few months back on some discount ebay thing, Mazuma'd it and they offered £8 more than she had paid. So we bought some more. Brand new, unwrapped phones GR8 4 scrappage.

They routinely offer 30-40% more than Mazuma for boxed stuff, because they sell 'grade a' stuff for more.
Whoop Whoop Pull Up Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I think my dad rumbled Mazuma Mobile's game when he said, "the only way they'll give you £150 for your phone is if you paid £300 for it yesterday!"
