Awesome! I have throughly been enjoying the work on this car, all the little updates make for awesome bite sized chunks so to speak, to read in between the bigger posts on the forum or while I am busy doing something, IE testing a lightbulb, go to sit back down while it warms up, catch up on this thread, go back to checking lightbulb :) (as I am doing right now in-fact LOL)

 

so whats next? :)

Trunk floor is next on the list. I have been thinking how to tackle it with the tools I have. I have a plan, and that'll be beginning to go into effect soon, if all goes well.

Prep work tonight. Emptied the trunk out, cleaned all the leaves and grinding dust that had accumulated.

Washed the frame rails out. Removed one Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and a lot of Mississippi.

Yup. Got a bit of metal to put back in there. Gonna chop it up into manageable pieces, beat the strengthening ribs in and weld it all up.

Makes it sound easy... Got some shapes to make that I haven't got anything to copy, including some compound curves.

Looks intimidating but one bit at a time is the only way.

Are the box sections originally separately boxed in or is it just closed off by the boot floor?

Very simple construction, just spot welded to the boot floor.

Decided to investigate the passenger side rear quarter. Thick Bondo!

I got the cutting disc out. Then I pulled hard. Superb welding.

Thankfully there's a fair bit of the rear quarter left on this side. I can copy the shape, which is good.

Got happy with the stripping discs. Lots of dust. Removed all the wob in the area.

Cleaned down and given a quick coat of paint, the original shape of the metal is still good, with only a couple minor dings and dents. Comical amount of filler put in for no reason.

The lower curve of the swage was too sharp on the new panel.

So, I softened it out by beating it over a round former.

Also had a go at beating the worst of the biggest dent out of the panel. That's good enough for just a light skim of filler now.

Trimmed and welded up the arch lip.

Had a look up in the arch. Not as bad as I had feared.

Cut out the thin metal and made a plan how to continue.

Took more metal out and fully welded the new patch in.

Welds seem to have taken okay. Better than what was holding it all together before...

A great deal of fiddle-faddle making small, stupidly shaped pieces of metal to repair the inner rear quarter section that remains.

You'll never see it unless you crawl underneath the car, going looking for it. But it does have the correct factory alignment tab on it...

Cut this out and went bent it up by eye using hammers and vice. Looks about right, let's test that theory.

Yeah, not too bad. Need to shrink one seam down a bit because I put a bit much heat in but it'll do. That's now the outer rear quarter 97.3% done.

Starting on the inner quarter.

Made that piece up and put it in. It's not quite 100% faithful reproduction but it's nice and solid. Fiddly bits up where the arch meets everything, next.

As weebly wobbly as it is yet, I'm still happier with that arch profile compared to how it was.

Turns out one size sheet was too skinny, the other not tall enough. Put the two larger sheets together to make one piece big enough. Welder was getting confused with this wire, running the feed far too fast. Not sure why, but it's different brand wire.

Started roughing the ribs out. 16ga is quite a bit harder to work with, slower and flexes out of shape worse. I got carpenter's blisters from it.

More tomorrow hopefully.

Hasn't rained properly here for about 2 months. 

 

Which is odd, usually summer is the rainy season. Next week is due to be constant rain though. We'll see if that happens.

The opposite to here really. It hasn’t been dry here for about 2 months!😆

Fantastic work though, it’s looking miles better than it did before.

Fixed the turn signals, one had a bad socket which was shorting out.
