I have throughly been enjoying the work on this car, all the little updates make for awesome bite sized chunks so to speak, to read in between the bigger posts on the forum or while I am busy doing something, IE testing a lightbulb, go to sit back down while it warms up, catch up on this thread, go back to checking lightbulb (as I am doing right now in-fact LOL) so whats next? PhilA Posted July 28, 2023 Author Posted July 28, 2023 Prep work tonight. Emptied the trunk out, cleaned all the leaves and grinding dust that had accumulated. Washed the frame rails out. Removed one Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and a lot of Mississippi. Yup. Got a bit of metal to put back in there. Gonna chop it up into manageable pieces, beat the strengthening ribs in and weld it all up. Makes it sound easy... Got some shapes to make that I haven't got anything to copy, including some compound curves. Phil Dan_ZTT, JMotor, RayMK and 6 others 9
jonathan_dyane Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 Looks intimidating but one bit at a time is the only way. Are the box sections originally separately boxed in or is it just closed off by the boot floor?

PhilA Posted July 29, 2023 Author Posted July 29, 2023 Hot day so limited amount of outside time allowed. Decided to investigate the passenger side rear quarter. Thick Bondo! I got the cutting disc out. Then I pulled hard. Superb welding. Thankfully there's a fair bit of the rear quarter left on this side. I can copy the shape, which is good. Got happy with the stripping discs. Lots of dust. Removed all the wob in the area. Cleaned down and given a quick coat of paint, the original shape of the metal is still good, with only a couple minor dings and dents. Comical amount of filler put in for no reason. PhilA Posted July 29, 2023 Author Posted July 29, 2023 Made up a repair section. mercedade, eddyramrod, Stanky and 13 others 16
2flags Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 This is looking good. Still some way to go but great to see progress being made. PhilA 1
PhilA Posted July 31, 2023 Author Posted July 31, 2023 The lower curve of the swage was too sharp on the new panel. So, I softened it out by beating it over a round former. Matches the original better now. Also had a go at beating the worst of the biggest dent out of the panel. That's good enough for just a light skim of filler now. PhilA Posted August 1, 2023 Author Posted August 1, 2023 Trimmed and welded up the arch lip. Tacked the quarter in place. Happy with that profile. Phil Mrs6C, 5speedracer, juular and 16 others 19
PhilA Posted August 3, 2023 Author Posted August 3, 2023 Had a look up in the arch. Not as bad as I had feared. Cut out the thin metal and made a plan how to continue. Took more metal out and fully welded the new patch in. Welds seem to have taken okay. Better than what was holding it all together before... Rust Collector, danthecapriman, Tickman and 10 others 13
PhilA Posted August 5, 2023 Author Posted August 5, 2023 Not a lot to show for today's work. A great deal of fiddle-faddle making small, stupidly shaped pieces of metal to repair the inner rear quarter section that remains. You'll never see it unless you crawl underneath the car, going looking for it. But it does have the correct factory alignment tab on it... Phil somewhatfoolish, Fumbler, juular and 15 others 18
PhilA Posted August 6, 2023 Author Posted August 6, 2023 Cut this out and went bent it up by eye using hammers and vice. Looks about right, let's test that theory. Yeah, not too bad. Need to shrink one seam down a bit because I put a bit much heat in but it'll do. That's now the outer rear quarter 97.3% done. Phil Zelandeth, LightBulbFun, somewhatfoolish and 12 others 15
PhilA Posted August 6, 2023 Author Posted August 6, 2023 Starting on the inner quarter. Made that piece up and put it in. It's not quite 100% faithful reproduction but it's nice and solid. Fiddly bits up where the arch meets everything, next. Phil captain_70s, Dyslexic Viking, eddyramrod and 6 others 9
PhilA Posted August 7, 2023 Author Posted August 7, 2023 Roughed in the arch profile. Ran out of mig wire. RayMK, captain_70s, danthecapriman and 3 others 6
PhilA Posted August 7, 2023 Author Posted August 7, 2023 As weebly wobbly as it is yet, I'm still happier with that arch profile compared to how it was. Phil Datsuncog, Mrs6C, GMcD and 9 others 12
PhilA Posted August 8, 2023 Author Posted August 8, 2023 Rust. Treated. Coated. That should slow the rot down a bit. LightBulbFun, Datsuncog, RayMK and 11 others 14
PhilA Posted August 11, 2023 Author Posted August 11, 2023 Turns out one size sheet was too skinny, the other not tall enough. Put the two larger sheets together to make one piece big enough. Welder was getting confused with this wire, running the feed far too fast. Not sure why, but it's different brand wire. Started roughing the ribs out. 16ga is quite a bit harder to work with, slower and flexes out of shape worse. I got carpenter's blisters from it. More tomorrow hopefully. bunglebus Posted August 11, 2023 Posted August 11, 2023 Enjoying the updates. When it's finished are you loading it with all your possessions and driving somewhere less rainy?

Next week is due to be constant rain though. We'll see if that happens. bunglebus 1

It hasn’t been dry here for about 2 months!😆 Fantastic work though, it’s looking miles better than it did before. eddyramrod and PhilA 2

PhilA Posted August 16, 2023 Author Posted August 16, 2023 Fixed the turn signals, one had a bad socket which was shorting out. Straightened out the front bumper with judicious application of too much force. Not perfect but better. Phil LightBulbFun, GMcD, cort1977 and 10 others 13
PhilA Posted August 20, 2023 Author Posted August 20, 2023 Well, that was a pain to create. 18 gauge steel eats cutting discs too, so I need to get some more. danthecapriman, somewhatfoolish, Dyslexic Viking and 6 others 9
