PhilA Posted August 3, 2022 Author Posted August 3, 2022 Pulled hard enough, the indicator assembly came off. The gearshift selector is all loose. End of the arm has a pin on it that fits in the detents, prevents shifting from Park etc without first pulling the lever towards you. Lever arm polished up okay though. That's the rest of it that needs to come apart now to see why it's so wibbly wobbly (technical term). Phil djim, Rust Collector, Dan_ZTT and 3 others 6

PhilA Posted August 5, 2022 Author Posted August 5, 2022 The difference between the climate of Mississippi and New Mexico is visible here. Replacement even still has the cadmium coating on the shaft. It's also officially the nicest chrome on the car. Rust Collector, Low Horatio gearbox, Tickman and 5 others 8
PhilA Posted August 7, 2022 Author Posted August 7, 2022 Decided today to pull the engine apart because the weather was nice. Pretty nasty. Wasp nest in the oil gallery was a nice touch All four rear pots were full of water. Heads are equally bad. Cuban rebuild on the pistons and block (wire brush). Water was sat all the way up in the intake. Nasty. I've lost my valve spring compressor. Improvised with a G clamp but I need to make a cage for the top. It then started to rain so I packed up and head in, out of energy. Need new manifold gaskets. CGSB, Dan_ZTT, CreepingJesus and 13 others 16
PhilA Posted August 8, 2022 Author Posted August 8, 2022 Bought a tool at AutoZone because I couldn't find mine. Valves all out, I'll start cleaning it up another night. CGSB, Dyslexic Viking, danthecapriman and 3 others 6
PhilA Posted August 9, 2022 Author Posted August 9, 2022 Clean up commence. These valves are seriously ropey. The sealing faces were also all burned and I'm surprised I had any compression at all. They recieved a do-or-die reface and will be lapped into the seats. Fun times Low Horatio gearbox, djim, JMotor and 13 others 16

PhilA Posted August 9, 2022 Author Posted August 9, 2022 To my surprise, they all lapped in well. That's that one done. One more to go. Garythesnail, JMotor, Fumbler and 19 others 22
PhilA Posted August 12, 2022 Author Posted August 12, 2022 You can see how badly the valve faces were burned, with a gentle skim the divot is left behind. Easily two thou'. Taken back down to flat. And repeat. I'll do the intake valves tomorrow. mercedade, sdkrc, Dyslexic Viking and 10 others 13
PhilA Posted August 12, 2022 Author Posted August 12, 2022 Also, please note this isn't a permanent repair thing. This engine is so far beyond trashed it's just to get it running. When I tried it before the compression was so poor all it would do was pop and burp a little. I had enough compression on only two cylinders to even make the starter motor labor. In normal running now I would expect a couple thousand miles out of those valves at best. Dyslexic Viking, AnnoyingPentium and Low Horatio gearbox 3
sdkrc Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 Haven't been on this thread in a while, forgot how good it was. Giving me motivation to work on mine. Really enjoying the updates and the workarounds, cracking work @PhilA loserone, CGSB, PhilA and 1 other 4
PhilA Posted August 12, 2022 Author Posted August 12, 2022 Real Cheap Rebuild, that's all. This valve, stored underwater, didn't fare well. It did clean up and I'm claiming now it's a performance part based upon golf ball physics; the pattern of dimples helps break up the boundary layer and allows for better gas flow. Some were better than others. That can go together if time allows. CreepingJesus, CGSB, Low Horatio gearbox and 12 others 11 4

PhilA Posted August 12, 2022 Author Posted August 12, 2022 I decided to get a little Heath Robinson and connected the remains of the shed wiring up to the generator. Nice idea in principle but all modern electronics are crap and all 3 of the LED lights above the benches went POP within a minute of being switched on. The fluorescent tube continues to work. Still, managed to clean up the cylinder head. Next up, lapping in the valves. Phil Rust Collector, danthecapriman, somewhatfoolish and 4 others 7
somewhatfoolish Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 That last valve would concern me, the pits are really deep and the head dropping off would spoil your day. Good shade tree mechanicking all the same. 3VOM and PhilA 1 1

Good shade tree mechanicking all the same. That's all this is, yup. I picked down into the pits and the camera made them look worse than they are. That's the intake valve so hotspots are less of a concern. If the exhaust valves looked like that I would agree more. somewhatfoolish and CreepingJesus 2
PhilA Posted August 12, 2022 Author Posted August 12, 2022 The fusible resistors went and fused. Pop.
PhilA Posted August 13, 2022 Author Posted August 13, 2022 The day cooled off a little. Lapped in the valves, it got a bit late to be running the generator so I packed up and will refit the springs tomorrow. Fumbler, danthecapriman, somewhatfoolish and 4 others 7
PhilA Posted August 13, 2022 Author Posted August 13, 2022 This is an ungrateful bastard of an engine. Trying to figure why it refuses to run. Saabnut, somewhatfoolish, CGSB and 1 other 4

Winnar winnar CHICEN DINNAR Yeah, I'm a dumbass and forgot you can get the timing at TDC on the wrong stroke with the dizzy in backwards. Started up and ran briefly on all 8. I'll go get a rebuild kit for the carb, they've got them on the shelf at the auto store. djim, Fumbler, Stanky and 15 others 18

PhilA Posted August 14, 2022 Author Posted August 14, 2022 Put the rebuild kit on the carb. Float keeps sticking down which is a pain. Also it keeps sneezing back out the carb and trying to set me on fire.
PhilA Posted August 14, 2022 Author Posted August 14, 2022 I might have blown the power valve out on the carb. That'll be a pain in the ass if I have. I'll just block the thing off if I have.
PhilA Posted August 14, 2022 Author Posted August 14, 2022 Testing shows that the spark is not going where the rotor arm points. It's going whichever way it pleases. New distributor cap, coil, rotor and amplifier module ordered. $24! We'll see if that makes the slightest bit of difference. It started to rain. I might pull the plugs later and do a compression test now that the rings have settled in a touch.

PhilA Posted August 14, 2022 Author Posted August 14, 2022 Checked compression. Remember the rear 4 pots were full of water. That's better than I thought it would be; certainly good enough to run. Apparently the 318 needs 100+ to run well, 80 it'll start to misfire and lower than about 65 it'll be really hard to start. Widened the plug gap out to 45 thou' because apparently that's where HEI should be at to reduce internal tracking. That helped and it actually barked off a couple times so hopefully the new cap will help. Carburetor continues to be a leaky POS. MorrisItalSLX, Low Horatio gearbox, CreepingJesus and 5 others 8
