Unexpected Shite Heavy Films

The other day I saw the film of 101 Dalmatians on television. This is not usually the kind of film I would watch; however I had nothing to do except laze around before work - so viewed it. It was the 1996 version with proper actors: Glenn Close, Hugh Laurie, a reasonably fit bird and a dull American. You know the film.

 

Anyhow it's old now; but what surprised me was the wall to wall shite on display in the exterior shots. In the background were numerous W123 Mercs, an E23 3 Series and countless others.

 

All of the characters drive shite vehicles too. Not one has a car that a dedicated Autoshiter would not be proud to own. From memory these were

 

The Bad'Un brothers: Mk2 Transit canvas back lorry (petrol version by the sound of it) last seen veering drunkenly into a field. To keep Fred Transit happy there is gratuitous footage of this vehicle; even in cab shots

 

Anita Dearly: very early, K-Reg, Clio which is that purply blue colour they all seemed to be

 

Roger Dearly: (this is only in one sequence so I assume it's his) early 80s 3 series. I don't know the numbers but it was the one with the black bit between the tail lights.

 

Skinner the furrier: Daimler DS 420 Hearse. Not really seen clearly, but rather flash.

 

Cruella De Vil: Panther DeVille V12 2 door hardtop. The silliest vehicle ever captured on celluloid; wonderful all the same and pops up regularly throughout proceedings. Even partakes in vague back end out action down a country lane.

 

The Metropolitan Police: a wide variety of 90s tat is on show from Escort Pandas to Omega traffic cars and Discovery 4x4s.

It's not Hugh Laurie it's a milk float. Americans find our milk delivery system cute; so like all other films every window in London offers an uninterrupted view of Big Ben and milk floats roam the streets.

 

 

Abandoned Mini at Cruella De Vil's country house. Presumably dumped when she got enough NCB to insure the Panther.

 

 

Ford Cargo Lorry. These used to be everywhere back then.

 

 

Omega traffic car. Probably 3.0 litre manual police spec. Great cars.

 

 

 

According to our shite spotting friends in the film world; this thing was a bespoke item for the film. It is a coach built kustom that still exists; and is a V12 (sounds like one). Presumably because it was expensive, unlike the other cars, it features heavily throughout the story and the eager viewer gets to see inside it at various points as well as it drifting round corners.

 

It is Cruella De Vil's car, and thankfully doesn't get pranged or catch fire or suffer any other hideous demise. I have to say it is one of my favourite film cars. I'd keep it the same but get a manual box and a Lister engine for a bit more fun. Forget Kowalski's Challenger or the Bandit's Trans Am; I'd be happy with this.

 

101 Dalmatians is the last film that anyone would expect to feature interesting cars; however all the characters drive gold plated Auto Shite. Has anyone else seen other films that unintentionally are gold mines of tat?

^^^^ LOL! It does as well. That guy is such a bell end.Those devilles came in 4-door flavour from the factory and are the most expensive car ever to use the all-time classic BL Maxi/1800 door set-up. So a 2-door one is a novelty and I can believe it was custom built for the film. Probably better for doing interior shots etc?I reckon it would be ace to rob its lengthened doors and build a 2-door MAXI GT COUPE INTERNATIONAL

The Panther DeVille is a right crock of shit. There's one for sale in Classic Cars this month for 58 grand. I'd rather spend that on a nice coachbuilt Bentley or Rolls from the 30s than one of these abberations The dash in it looks a right cobbled together mess and as for using Maxi doors... Those Beaufords are a cheapo version of it, they use Mini doors in the same way - it's like history repeating itself. The only 1930s recreation/replica I've ever seen that is any good is the Suffolk SS100 which is in a completely different league.

Matilda is a surprisingly good for US shite-spotters as Danny DeVito is a devious used car salesman and it shows you him rolling back the clocks with a power drill and suchlike. Even though it's a 1996 film he seems to largely sell 30-year-old land yachts.

Jago Automotive made the chassis for the Panther J72 and the Deville and did some R&D work for them on the running gear side of things too, I shall now discreetly slip out of anorak mode............

That Cruella Panther is IIRC on display at Disneyland Studios Paris.Was looking rather rusty and ropey when I was there two years ago.

Maybe I'm a bit stupid, but why are those Panthers worth so much????There's one in a cine film in the Sweeney 2 film with the Nazi bint draped over it, 'Save rubber!' and all that...On a Seasonal note there is a film I have on tape recorded off the telly called 'Singletons Pluck' about a Norfolk farmer who walks his geese to London. My traditional thing is to watch it every Christmas...Now if a bit of Mk1 transit/VW Camper/Volvo F86/Pug 505 estate/lots of Geese is your bag it's a winna.Also in 'Edge of Darkness' when the hero Ronnie Craven (Bob Peck)travels down to London from Yorkshire in his Fiat 131, there's treasure such as Ranchos and Alpines all in shot travelling down with him...

I cant see why anyone would pay £58k for one of those shitters nowadays, they might be rare but they are nowt more than a pumped-up beauford. In fact i'm surprised no-one has lopped the top off one, fitted a Ford V6 or Nissan diesel truck engine and put it to work as a crap 'vintage style wedding limo'

I actually like this film! I remember watching it when I was 6 and loving all the cars in it. The Transit in particular, was well cast for the charecters.
