Did they actually make pickups like this?

I think home-made conversions were popular for the earlier cars - there are a few about - but there was a factory made pick-up called a Bantam in South Africa, from the Mk3 Escort onwards...

No - that was an estate. I wonder what they're doing with it, it's probably still not beyond saving economically going by current prices

One day I'll find the article on a converted van that had the lower roof from a saloon/estate, that looked good.

Here's a nice standard-looking Mk1 back in 2009:

1970 Ford Escort GT Mk1

I'm not going to copy and paste someone else's photo, but a quick Google will show what it looks like now.......

That's perfect. Absolutely gorgeous.

I really, really, really wish I hadn't found a photo of what it looks like now. Just WHY? There should be prison sentences for this sort of bastardisation.

Thing is, by doing that to it it’s now lost what made it nice & special. It’s now just ‘yet another’ heated up rally wannabe. There’s loads like it.

Its not my car of course and each to his own etc etc.

It's utterly ruined.

However, it would be interesting to know how much it cost the owner to bugger it up into the barried shiz which features in the second photo and what the market value would now be compared to previously. To me, the blue carbuncle is worth approximately 0.001% of the original. Don't some Ford fans* pay silly money for the fugly look though?

I'm a huge fan of mk1 escorts- they're before my time but an unmolested one really grabs my attention.

my grandfather had a constant cycle of them when they were cheap run arounds, he had 3 at one time; my mother recalls him having about a dozen engines spare. he still has an abundant spares stash these days as well.

the best part (for me at least) is that, after all these years, he still has one! his current car is a 2dr 1100l in oh so 70's bronze, and is completely standard apart from that. I've been in before and it attracts rather a lot of attention, not least because it was towing a load of garden waste to the tip! (edit: this was only in 2017) picture of the car below.

I remember Mk1s were cheap runarounds when I first became interested in cars in the early 1980s, plenty of them around still & easy to keep going as the mechanical bits were simple to work on.

That's criminal, an unmolested early GT turned into that fuck up.

Once a make of car has a "scene" it seems to attract morons.
