Last week, I paid the invoice for the engine build... OUCH.

However, I'm encouraged by Pete's professional assessment after blezzing the Dyane around Herefordshire on trade plates for a few days.

Even with just the basic map in the 123+ ignition system, it's <quote> FACKING QUICK BUDDY </quote> to the point that he's seriously considering pulling the motor out of the demonstrator 720 2CV and rebuilding it to match!  He admitted that he has included a few tweaks on mine that he's not done before...

There's more to come after refining the mapping.  We'll need to strap it to a rolling road when it's been run in, but Pete's confident this motor has cracked the 50bhp mark, with lots of lovely torque too.  That's more than a good race engine, and a hell of a lot less top-endy.  The Visa 652 carb is the key here.

It failed its initial MOT, but only on a couple of rough wheel bearings.  Not bad, considering it's sat in the garage for over ten years, except a brief spell in 2017.

Should be ready for collection around March 1st.

I hope you enjoy the benefit.

Which I assume is not legal for use on racing 2CV cars?  Shame.  After coping for so long on the yellow 0.3hp engine, it would be nice to give car 28 a "boost"

#28's soft engine runs the twin-choke Solex standard on late 602s.  The race engines have Webers, one of which was thermally reconfigured at Snet last August!

Sadly, the Visa carb isn't allowed.  Wouldn't flow enough fuel at high revs, anyway.

I'd be interested to know your/his thoughts on this, particularly reliability. I'm thinking of getting one for the Stellar, as when I took that to a rolling road there were a lot of gains to be made with the ignition timing rather than fuelling. And the chances of a mechanical distributor giving exactly the right advance over all rpm/load combinations on a modified engine are slim to none, so there may be more to be had.  Plus it's a stealth upgrade, as would a nice set of gas-flowed heads...B)

Then, when you get the gas-flowed heads, you can do it again, by remapping the same unit.  Not cheap, but worth it.

But then I'd have to pay for two lots of mapping - man maths says that it'd be actually saving money to get the heads done at the same time! And I could swap the existing Lumenition kit onto the Landy, as I want to fit electronic ignition to that too, so all in all it's almost free!

I used AB Garage last time, who I was very happy with. Looking at the Google reviews it seems he does a good job.

They reckoned the fuelling was very close already, so charged me half what I was expecting as most of the time was just playing with the ignition advance. And stop it, you're encouraging me!

Sparrow called this afternoon; should be ready by this weekend!

Being the perfectionist he is, he's spent the last two days trying different combinations of jets/emulsion tubes/accelerator pumps in the Visa carburettor to resolve a tiny tendency to lean out the mixture under certain circumstances.  He gets like this, so Max (his 2IC) will take it home tonight to confirm that it's actually fine.  And it will be.

Further advice is also to move the 135 tyres to the back and fit 145s on the front, both for the extra rubber on the road and to raise the gearing a little.

I insured it today and will tax it tomorrow.

Proper excited now 😎

I'll bet. It's gonna be a right giggle.

I want to go to the French National but haven’t booked anything yet for the fear of cancelling.

A day visit to the French National is still an option on the way from Chalon-sur-Saône to Reims, if I can face the inevitable chaotic lack of organisation!
