You're not doing it hard enough or often enough (fnar). You'll soon have less grippy tyres all right.

That's a handy diagram. Could be throttle position sensor too. It seems to depend on how far you put the throttle down.

Nope not on MK1 1.6.

The TPS basically tells the car open or closed throttle and nothing else. Hence swapping in BMW TPS if you want it to work properly for turboing.

As GM says MAF unplugged will stall it. I have literally just sold a 1.6 MAF that I could have sent to you.

I have got box of bits sitting in my garage if you need anything

there's a complete 1.6 engine here that we can swap bits over to troubleshoot ? it was running fine for the two minutes I drove it up and down the street

Cheers. I'm going to check the basics when I ever get time/it stops raining. I think I'll give it a full service anyway to celebrate the mot.

Aren't these age AFM (Air Flow Meter) rather than MAF (Manifold Air Flow)? Basically a flap in a box (AFM) Vs the modern hotwire types (MAF).

I have vague recollections that bottom end can go a bit flat if the O2 sensor is knackered. Once you get above around 3k, it runs open loop hot or cold. Disconnecting the sensor will make it run open-loop all the time and may appear to fix the issue. This is possibly old enough to not need worry about a working Catalyst for MOT. Mine on K-reg was right at the edge for needing one. Will burn more fuel without it connected though.

I dug these out of my box o' bits, fitted them onto my own car and it runs just fine, I'll bring them over tomorrow and you can see if they make a sod of difference

Forgot how cheap MX5 parts are. I paid a fiver more than that service kit on 6 Bosch plugs for the Boxster alone.

I was pleasantly suprised. Just over fifty quid for a full service.

The existing ht leads look ancient compared the the new ones.

I've swapped them over. It's a lot more responsive but the flat spot is still there. I'll have to wait for the service kit.

sounds like a step in the right direction :) maybe grab a can of carb cleaner and give the intake manifold a good blast through ?

Would brake cleaner do?

Air filter is proper minging. I think that's a good sign.d9f5ea104b18f90760fde2c34340f3cd.jpg

I'm having some problems here. The plug is properly binding up when I'm loosening it. I'm scared I'll snap it. The engine is red hot but I've never had this problem before. Any tips?
I've tried working it back and forwards but I think I might strip the threads.15aad09282183de4feef3c4c38cbc75d.jpg

I've managed very carefully. I've used a magnaclean magnet to extract them. The tips are very oily and two of them dripped oil as if it's running rich. Other than a blocked air filter, what could cause that? Maf or o2 sensor maybe?

I don't think these have been changed for years.

I'm going for an essential travel to test it. Essential as if my van breaks down, I'll have to use this for work.
Tick over seems slightly low.

that's some nasty looking plugs you've got there - hopefully a good service and a decent run out will work wonders, does look like its been running rich though.

your idle looks not far off, it should be around 850rpm, if you do adjust it, remember to bridge the TEN and GND pins on the diagnostic connector first

Idle is manual and it's adjustable. Google will say the procedure.

Probably the plugs aren't giving a good strong spark if old + filthy. This would lead to incomplete combustion and leading them to foul up even more.

Might be worth checking the PCV - I seem to remember these do fail on these eventually.

Cheers.

No difference to the flat spot. Further investigation required.

It'll have to wait for another day. Cba atm.

I have a timing light if you want to check the ignition timing ? Factory spec is 10degrees but the 1.6 responds quite well to advancing it to 14.

I have a timing light but my garage is still boarded up and I can't get to any of my gear. I'd apreciate a borrow. How do you adjust it. I thought it was all electronic.

I'll check the pcv while I'm on. You can delete the charcoal cannister as well. I did it on my nb iirc.

Bring it through her tomorrow afternoon if you like, the timing is electronic but adjusted by varying the cam angle sensor.

That would be great. I'll have to make sure there's nothing planned for me first.

Charcoal canister does no harm to the car by having it there.
