some more scrappage victims

its bad enough the scheme being introduced by the government in the first place, but the real t******s are the meat heads trading in good cars knowing they will be binned.its makes me both sad and very angry.

Well it never fails to surprise me how uneducated some owner are. I would like to think they genuinely think their cars are not worth anything, and if so they think they are getting a good deal. With some things it's near to the mark for the money you can get from selling and any discount you might be able to get, but with many of the cars pictured here and in many other threads all over the internet, they would easily sell for near or over to two grand anyway (1968 moggy, 1972 beetle ect ect). If the sellers are ignorant, the dealers almost certainly are not. The problem is the potential buyers for these cars and vans don't know they are out there till it's too late. If it was possible to sell them on they should do.

Someone I know just traded a P reg Rover 600 against a new 318i.The Rover wasn't too bad but the back arches were on the way. It's 2 grand off a new car for what is basically worthless toss. A rusting high mileage Rover 600 is of no loss to anyone. An original '79 SD1 is - I can't believe that won't get 'put to one side'.

Exactly, but then again if this was to come up in another 10 years god only knows what will be chopped in, the US govt had the right idea, nothing over 25 can go into the scheme.

I don't have any problem with "desirable" stuff being scrappaged. There is no shortage of red MGBs, Morris Plonkers or barried Minis. That Mini needs more than £2k spent before it's fit to be seen in public anyway. I don't think the Beetle was a scrappage car, I'm sure it's been discussed already.

I think the beetle was, if it didn't have 'for sale' next to the price, the price was for the parts only.....

its still wasteful.for instance, that MG is in better condtion than mine by miles, yet thats being cubed. doesnt make any sense.

i would cheerfully offer to do a swap, infact I have (in the case of a Mk1 transit) if numbers are all they care about.....just what constitutes scrapping a vehcile as far as the scheme goes? Cos if I took a spot weld drill to a Mk1, I could have mechanics (engine, gearbox, prop axles) bonnet, grille, scuttle, doors, steps, door frames, side panels (4 if there is no side door) rear quarters, front and back valance, roof, floor pan, back doors, back door appature., roof and side ribs, inner rear wheel arches and front inner wheel arches. Oh, here's the VIN plate back

That's hit the nail on the head. Yes, there are some cars I wish hadn't been scrapped because I liked them, but cars get scrapped all the time anyway. The real frustration comes from the government going out of their way to push the population into a more wasteful approach. On one hand, don't leave your telly on standby but feel free to get in loads of debt, scrap a perfectly good car and then fly to a sunny country on holiday from the new runway they've ok'd!

Well after months of not moving this has finally been traded in under the scheme:

Replaced by a shiny new Hyundai, and i also spotted it at the back of the carlot.

To be fair to the owners, i can understand why they got rid, but its still a shame, the only tat in Old Basing now is a 305 under a cover.

But to level things off i did see alot of cars today i havent yet, an E24 6 series on a G plate, a Burgandy Ford Anglia, a Truimph Vittesse, a Metro(which i snapped) and a Hirst like 626.

Also, Ratdat, do you know what happened to your Sunny estate, as i saw a heavily damaged one on a flatbed today which looked identical to yours.....

Aw poor Cherry, I had one just the same, same colour and all. I did well over 200000 miles with me. Great car.

You know, I'm starting to wish no one posts any more threads like this one!! We're pretty unanimous on here about what a dreadful, wasteful con it is, and seeing these pics just makes me want to weep, not to mention bloody angry.

Millions of people all over the world don't even have a bicycle, and here we are crushing these things...

Posted

Too right...my mate is desperate for a cheap little runabout at the moment and perfectly good cars are being crushed all for the sake of another recycled Korean corned beef tin. The sooner this thing is over the better!

Posted

Well if its any consolation, it was looking pretty crusty round the sills now.But i agree, it is a loss, but at least some members on here have some cherrys and sunnys........ so we know others are in good hands.

what exact date does this f****n crap scheme end?then I can plan a big party!

Posted

Money will run out during January apparently.... Otherwise the scheme ends at the end of February IIRC.

Posted

I thought it had already run out, and it had been 'topped up'. Fookin urry up and end I say!

I went down my local scrap metal recylers the other day on the scrounge for some bits of steel. I haven't been down there all summer so was a bit shocked to find their yard so full of cars you could barely move. They take in a few motors normally and have maybe 20 or 30 or so around the yard at any given time but there must have been about 400 in there... all from scrappage. Seems they have got a contact to take them. Some of them were eye watering like a mint... and I mean MINT dark green Mazda MX5 and a low mileage black T reg Mazda 323 that was also spotless. Most of the cars were R, S or T reg and I'd say there was nothing wrong with at least half of them and about 80% of them were perfectly useable. Seeing them on mass like that really brought home what a fukkin stupid waste of money and resources this scheme is. Overseas car companies must be having a hearty chortle at our dumb government.

There was an article in the Guardian of all places yesterday questioning the scrappage scheme. It reckoned, due to the vast majority (somethign like 80% it said) of the scrappage-bought cars coming from overseas, that if UK folk were economising elsewhere in order to be able to afford a new car, the net economic benefit of the scheme towards the UK could very well be nil or maybe even negative. It seems that the economic benfit is dubious and the ecological benefit is very dubious. Hopefully it will run out of cash soon and our money will be used for something more productive than to buy new foreign-buit cars for random mambers of the public.Although I am looking forward to the inevitable wails of doom and gloom from the SMMT when this stream of free cash dries up! 'THOUSANDS OF JOBS ARE AT RISK' etc etc. Yeah right, go eat a bowl losers!

Posted

I hate even reading about it, just depresses me.Everytime I see and new 'world box' on an 09 or 59 plate on the road now I always think 'what has been sacrificed for that to live' - and it angers me.

Spotted at my local Fiat/Alfa dealer...

Very crusty Astra...A deserving scrappage victim.

Posted Image

At another dealer (cant remember where.. may have been west London somewhere) Nasty Leganza.

Posted Image

So not all scrappage cars are 1 owner low mileage minters, some are actual scrap!

However, back at the Fiat/Alfa garage...

Rover 418 hatchback.

Posted Image

55k from new, excellent condition. Its got the "scrappage" sticker in the windscreen but it has some extra stuff written on in black marker.

"DO NOT TRADE, NOT SCRAPPAGE!??"

No idea what that means, maybe its a scrappage car thats fallen through for some reason. (I hear quite a few do) It should be available for saving if anyones interested.

Heres the website of the dealer concerned.

www.plattsgarage.com

Its deffo worth saving by the looks of it!

That Leganza looks quite tidy to me, at least before the sales staff presumably kicked it in.There's a decent MK4 Fiesta in Batley which is gradually getting more smashed up by the morons who work there, irritates me a bit to know this money is keeping some cocky lads with M&S ties in a job, they seem really grateful for it! Nice to know they can spend all day kicking old cars in, hopefully one day they'll give it one boot too many, knock it off the ramps and send it rolling back through the showroom window. Now that I'd pay to see.

Posted

Ha ha, yeah, a bit like that scene in "Ferris Beullers day off" when the Ferrari falls off the jack.I agree the Leganza has been kicked in but it looked to have been a bit of a snotter anyway. No great loss to motoring heritage, anyway. Theres always scrappage cars at the Fiat/Alfa place, and nine times out of ten they are utter dross, MOT borderline rot boxes.

Posted

Equally quite a lot of scrappage cars are tidy, well looked after cars which I would quite happily buy with my sub-£1000 budget. There's a nice Marea 5-pot diesel estate advertising scrappage at the nearest Citroen dealer, it's a shame as I could see myself in that car.

Posted

I keep seeing the salvage place picking up cars from the Citroen dealer next to work. In all honesty most of them are utter dross - tired Astras, Escorts and the like. Occasionally there is something nicer though. On Wednesday saw a tidy looking Hyundai Coupe being loaded onto the transporter. Seemed a shame.

Mate of mine had a VW Polo with a dead engine (Head Gasket). He px'd it against a new Beetle about two weeks before scrappage was introduced and he received the princely sum of £150 px as "scrap value".So yes, its fair to say he hates the scrappage scheme as well!

A lovely late Volvo 940 turbo. Built in the last year of 940 production and arguably the best Volvo ever built. Barely run in with 148k on the clock it has many happy years motoring ahead of it.

Posted Image

WRONG. Its a scrappage victim!

Posted

"George, the headlamp wipers on the Volvo are wonky""Oh no Mavis. We'd better get it down the dealer and swap it for a new car. The Prime Minister suggests we'll be better off as a result."
