Was up visiting scrap yard mans work place when we came across these. Now i didnt dislike the Bluebird when they were new but i it was never in my top ten of desierable cars. However this is almost criminal. The Nissan Mg mini and rover vw beetle all must be crushed.Far as i was led to believe apart from the Rover all scrapage victims

In the background of this pic of one of the 2 rover 2000s in the yard. you can just make out the rear of a rover 400 tourer. This one is the 416 with the honda engine and was in excellent condition inside and not hardly a mark on the car.Unfortunaltey it got to go

This nice siroco is for sale

What's going on? Can you buy the whole car? Let me know when they get a Mk1 transit in.

^ Thats what I was wondering. The price in the screen suggests the whole car is for sale, if thats the case then they must not be scrappage victims.

Posted

Yeah that is a bit strange, I've just been on U-Pull-It, If you search say 1970-1999 and then go from the lowest mileage some of the results are shocking. There's car's on there with such low mileages, Unless they have had clock changes, but there's a black Micra with only 931 miles on there which can't be right?, And a Fiat Bravo HGT with 7871 miles and a tidy Starlet with only 19003 miles.

What the price referes to is this. You pay the price it says then u can take what ever you want off the car.Engine gearbox etc etc whatever. However the shell cannot go anywhere. The shell gets crushed.Basically what you would do is turn up first thing in the morning pays your dosh then spend rest of day strippping the car.The guys are very helpfull and amenable. However once the certifacate of destruction is issued that is it.The Bluebird from memory only had about 23000 odd miles on it.In the pic you cant really see it but the engine bay really gleamed and the whole car wasnt even faded. The MG we were told had an immaculate interior and engine bay.The underside actually had new parts fitted to it.! The only cars that are for sale are near the gate. When i was there there was a punto an Audi avant cat c rover 400 desiel range rover and jeep cherooke.Think one or two more but cant mind what else. The rest of the cars actually in the yard proper have to be crushed. It would make you weep literally!

3 cheers for the scrappage scheme. Perfectly servicable cars needlessly removed from the road and destroyed. Bravo.Atleast parts can be saved this way, many places simply bale scrappage cars.

Posted

Like U Pull It then, but if I see a sign that says 'For Sale' I would have assumed that's the car, not the parts. Can I get them on the sale of goods act?

Posted

The only one that says 'For Sale' is the Scirocco, which was for sale.

that bluebird is spotless what a shame to see it there

That Scirocco is lovely, I hope someone buys it. Threads like this are torture though. Those Bluey pics, and the ones of the early SD1... just make me scream inside. It's all so thoughtless, mindless waste. God knows why these cars, especially the SD1, end up on the scrappage scheme. It's beyond me.And it makes the thought of somebody breaking in and rescuing these doomed motors not seem so bad. Against the law and that....But in this case, the law is an ass. It's just such a bloody con. If I hear the word "banger" again on the radio.....Mark.

feeling it for the nissan looks a great clean car that :?

should,nt be allowed to scrap em that would make an ideal starter car for somebody on a low income ( i started with a nissan sunny cost £350 t and t)

This is Upullit - the one in Scotland scrappylad works for.

That Sirocco was purchased in the end IIRC.

In the case of the SD1/P6/MG it makes an even bigger farce of the scrappage scheme. Id wager that Rover covered next to no mileage between MOTS and hence created very little greenhouse gasses, its replacement will almost certainly be driven more frequently and hence create more polution than its predecessor. As poorly thought out the scrappage scheme is ive no doubt that the intention was never to destroy classics, just 10-15 year old clunkers.

Does the Beetle have to be crushed whole? being as they are seperate chassis could I come and unbolt the body? :)

Posted

Its about time this abysmal scheme was kicked into touch once and for all.It really makes me unhappy seeing all these perfectly good cars going to the crusher, as most are low milage, well maintained cars owned by elderly people (the only people who have old cars that can really afford a new cars!)its all wrong and the sooner it ends the better.does anyone know the date that it officially ends? I know the government extended it but surely it must end sometime?? lets hope anyway.

Where is this place? Its not AG Watson in Pontefract is it?

Thank god for that. At first i thought it must be the Scirocco that was mentioned a few weeks back but when i googled AG Watson i got an address in Pontefract. Thought i was going to end up with another car then.....Will pop the photo on the Scirocco Register in the hope of dragging someone out. It looks like a GTi grill so might be tempting to someone.

That Beetle or the Mini would have been ideal first cars/projects for my son

Interesting point with the beetle, if just the chassis has to be crushed whats stopping anyone with a spare chassis going in, unbolting everything and sticking it onto the new chassis. The original chassis is probably rotten anyway.

Posted

They only did 1000 of those Mini British Open Classics - not quite as painful as the scrappidged Dolomite SE, but still quite a rare one.

I know that Scirocco! I used to see it park around Linlithgow up until a few weeks ago. It looked good other than huge rust scabs creeping under the plastic wheel arch liners, which I can see someone has tried to repair. I be live it was owned by a chap whos into his VW's and currently has a Corrado. Thats good it will live on.So if they are scrappage victims, how come some are for sale - is there redemption for them yet??

Posted

Not all of them are scrappage, its just a general scrapyard that takes in cars folk just drive in for scrapping as well as insurance write offs and scrappage victimsThere's a bit at the side when you go in with a dozen or so cars usually for sale that the yard owners have deemed worth saving.

How do you open a scrap yard then? I could buy some land, open a scrappie and offer good prices to the dealerships. Then get robbed. Oh shame. none of the good stuff gets crushed. Looking in my crystal ball you understand.

You can just tell all the dealerships you will pay a minimum of £2100 for any interesting cars bought in where the customer wants to use the scrappage scheme discount. You buy the cars instead of them going into the scheme. It would probably be cheaper in the long run, plus you wouldn't have to defraud various government agencies.

Well if I won the lottery I would. At the end of the day the dealers are only responsible for a grand of the two grand through the scheme, so that's a fair price, but I bet they don't get get paid that, what scrap man would pay a grand for something they will see £200 at best, weighed in? Forget about the parts they may or may not sell, it's not worth their relying on that, so they will only look at each car as weigh in scrap value only.

Fred, How many times does this have to be said?

The dealers don't pay anything, the government comes up with a £1000 and the manufacturers pay the other £1000, or often more, depending on the particular vehicle and promotion.

The dealers never own the vehicle, they simply arrange for the scheme to be facilitated. So the scrapyard dosen't pay the dealer anything, in fact they may only pay the government to participate in the scheme.

The way round, as I described is for the salesman to intervene, when the private customers comes in and says 'I want a new Fiesta, I have a old Mk3 Cortina to trade in under the governments scheme and want £2k off my new Fiesta' .

At this point the salesman can say 'if you don't want to scrap the car, I have a friend, the nice Mrs F. Transit, who will pay you £2100 for your Cortina and you can put that towards the new Fiesta instead'.

A variation of the above is how cars such as DW's Bond Equipe and that Riley RM were saved.

OK manufacturer pays one grand, either way, nobody responsible for the RETAIL of the car gives two grand off the car, the gov give one grand.SOMEBODY tell me what is paid for the scrappage cars, form the dealer before they are destroyed. I am sure they are not given away, and I am sure, whoever is doing the paying does not pay two grand for them! SHEESH! why is that so hard to understand too?
