I remember my grandad melting lead in a saucepan and slapping that over rusty holes!   I was exposed to all the fumes and chemicals and it never did me any hnnnnngggghhhhh

I'm exposed to them everyday at work. Fuck knows what I'm breathing in when I'm soldering. Old paint etc and flux contains acid ffs.

I noticed when I was in the boot yesterday disconnecting the battery, it looked very crusty down there. I'm going to fettle it today.428e9e13607e1002af276ae060f991e3.jpg

This bit on the passenger rear side wheel arch also looked rusty and strangely melty. I wonder if it's been welded underneath.

The battery clamp bolt has sheared, great. I did find 50p to make up for it though.78db4c657de9c1488756afb63f4ed8d0.jpg

Used my new thing to cut the plastic away as removing it would have meant stripping the whole rear quarter including removing the seats etc. Not sure what's happened here. Battery acid maybe? I'll just clean it up, treat it and paint it.
The cutting discs are soft as shite. I broke 3 trimming this plastic!179c194e5a12a1dbff86b33c5d71b17b.jpg

Cleaned up. It's a strange one and localised. I'm just gonna fill it, vactan it and paint over.
It's behind the wheel arch liner so Mr. Mot man shoudn't see it.ad8fa2459d8b875b25e12cca97477542.jpg

That’s an odd burn, looks like something may have shorted out there somehow.  And that’s not too much Vactan, a generous helping would be a fair summary

Of course I've shut the boot on the mini and now it won't open because the battery is disconnected.
Great.

The front grille has been lovingly siliconed on with the lower one stuck on with trim tape. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and buying new ones.

I did some lead loading when on an evening course in car bodywork restoration in the early 90s.

I'm sure they still do lead loading in certain circumstances. I've seen it on some car programmes anyway.

Over enthusiastic application with a scraper resulted in some chips behind the bottom grille bit.

This possibly will be seen through the honecomb bit when I refit it.

I sprayed some of the colour into it's lid and nicked one of the bairns paint brushes to touch it up.

I need to fix the battery clamp on this today. The remains of the stud is rusted in solid. I think I'm gonna get some threaded bar, nuts and washers and rig something up.I will ave to drill a new hole through the floor though.

The engine bay is minging as well. If I get time I'll spruce it up.

If that ever happens again, lift the rear seat base and theres a cable release for opening the boot thereScreenshot_20200427-094454_WhatsApp.thumb.jpg.bdd557436006b112a5024b7b2b2435a9.jpg

The shiny stuff is going to make a massive improvement to the looks!  Pretty cheap too I think, tempted to get similar myself.  My bumper is slightly misaligned from a previous repair so I might do something about that soon and a new grille would lift it at the same time

What’s your interior like, much chrome in there?  Ours has a few bits scattered about which really lifts the ambience.

I also did some bini fettling this week . Finally got round to putting the bargain £250 convertible on the ramps . It’s bloody lovely underneath . Popped a new clutch in it , new gear linkage pivot , rear pads and a caliper and she’s good to go for the missis .

The interior door handles are chrome. The rest just looks like silver plastic. The seats look to be half pleather and the cloth bits could do with a clean. I'll take a couple of photos later.

I went to aldi yesterday in it. I love driving it, it's a proper little flyer. I had 70mph in 2nd gear before the limiter kicked in!

With the lights sorted this will be a great car.  It's one I keep reminiscing about.

Was there some oil consumption issue before, or was I imagining it?

Posted

I'm not sure. It didn't have any in when I bought it. I put two litres in and haven't had to top it up since.
I adjusted the lights when I took them out to clean the chrome rings. I adjusted them then but I haven't been out in the dark to check them since. It's dead easy to do anyway.

Sounds a bit like my 206 then.  Was fine for a month, I lent it to Jim Bell for a couple of days, and he found it was empty.  It's barely used any oil since.
