Due to lack of time/space/mojo im now attempting to off load this French beauty. It owes me 100 squid and its in Stoke on Trent. Delivery possible at cost.

Bought this metallic turd brown Renault recently from a work colleague. He had bought a newer car and was going to weigh it in unless I saved it, an all too typical scenario im sure youl agree...

Its a 2 litre 'Monaco' Model with beige/brown leather interior. Brown over brown. How 80's shite is that?! 70k from new, FRSH up to 53K, one owner from new until 2005, then my workmate.

Its in pretty good shape. From what I know it will need new rear brake shoes for its MOT but theres also the odd scabby bit that needs tidying, the rust on the rear arches inside the door shuts being the most ugly. Not an MOT point though. The interior is mint, and is a very comfortable place to sit and press butttons/make vrooming noises e.t.c

The drivers doorglass needs replacing thanks to vandals, ive tried a few breakers but Reno 21s are getting very thin on the ground, im told theres one being broken locally so fingers crossed. Another slight minus point is that I cant get it started! The starter/solenoid wont engage, I havent had time to investigate fully but the solenoid connection is nice and clean. Either way im pretty sure its a minor fault.

Its on the in laws drive at the moment- I cant seem to find the time or the money to do anything with it. First things first though, new window and get that starter fault fixed!

If all else fails sign up to 1stchoice spare on t'internet, they found a window for my lad's Polo within 20 minutes, all prices inc vat and delivery etc....

i just scrapped a 21 as well, wasnt a monaco , if it had been one of those i'd of saved it  interior pics :P

+1 on the interior shots.Interesting to see if Renault cows are better quality than Peugeot ones.

Posted

Ill take some internal shots as soon as I get chance- which isnt that often! I can confirm the hide is of good quality and nice and sloppy. Could do with a bit of a feed though.Unfortunately the wife doesnt like it. Whenever I talk of MOTing it and cruising around in a nice slice of prime 80's mega-tat she just interrupts me by saying "NO WAY!" and leaves the room.

Posted

Yes, but the Allegrot is so shite, its cool. 1980s Renos are just plain shite to Joe public.

Posted

Starter may just be jammed. Hit it a hearty blow with a rubber mallet.Good save, BTW!

Posted

Nah, I dont think its a jammed starter, I cant hear the solenoid doing anything. Could be a cack earth.

Try PMing Mr Reno off here, he sorted a full set of glass for a 25 recently..Also found some in stock at a comapny the supplies RAC windscreens!

 Sounds familiar! good save that, havn't seen a 21 in a fair while now, I bet that interior is the last word in style!

Excellent! These must be pretty scarce now, shame as they are a pretty nice thing. As mentioned, Mr Reno should be able to sort glass (and anything else) out!

I really didn't think much of these in their day, very boxy compared to a 405 but I have to say that looks nice. And brown FTW!Did anyone hear Sarah Kennedy wittering on this morning about brown cars, and how some crack pot is trying to invent a flourecent brown paint?!Silly old bat!

Unfortunately yes, she really is a deranged old bag, the 'Mrs Slocombe' type mutterings about her pussy collection and the random warbling old time singing is not a good way to start the day

The brown car thing must have been running for a while, I heard her going on about the lack of brown cars atleast 2 weeks ago. She is a bit crap but she used to be a bit of a hottie so ill let her off.

Hottie.

Errrr, I dont think so no. Just as well as it almost certainly wouldnt work.

well i never a 2 litre monaco still got some bits around have got some 21 turbos to break at some point so can find a window if all else fails starter is same as early pre 97 espace and quite a few other bit same mechanic wise good luck ps rear arches usually fail mot as rear seat belt mountings too close :!:

Tim, has this got a longitudinal engine despite being FWD? I seem to remember the bigger Renaults having a set up like that.

Posted

It's a 2.0 so it will be longitudinal, as were the 2.1 diesels. The 1.7 petrol and 1.9 diesels had transverse engines- perhaps the only transverse-engined car ever to be easy to work on.

I'm scrapping a 92 (phase 2) gtx. don't think it's any good for the glass on your phase 1 but give us a shout for anything else. Shame really, the rad sprung a serious leak (I suspect it was a local gang with a screwdriver - but that's another story) and pretty certain it boiled up. The 2 litre is a really decent car. It was comfortable, decent poke, and economical, but rather souless. Mrs Aa used it as a skip whenever she had it for any length of time but that just prooved how big the boot was....................There's a specialist renault breaker in blackburn area that usually has 21 stuff. And one in south london (towards croydon i think) that seems to have some as well.

Posted

I keep looking at the Savanna as a cheap, useful hack. These phase 1 cars are definitely better looking than the phase 2 - good colour too! Typical Renault really - let's do a limited edition, special issue, top of the range version of our cars and, for that extra touch of class, let's paint them all brown.

Posted

Isnt the glass all interchangable between the different phases? I know to a 21 in a very local breakers, but I think its a K reg.

Please peeps, help me out here!

Looks like people would far rather moan on and on about 'terrible' people scrapping all those nice cars for £2000 than actually pay a fraction of that for something much rarer. What a surprise

Posted

^ I see your point but thats a bit unfair. An awful lot of people here have saved plenty of cars in their time. A 21 Monaco is seriously rare and would make a nice enough tool but you have to bear in mind that not everyone has unlimited funds / storage / time / whatever.I've just sold my R11 Electronic which is probably rarer than the 21 because basically I don't have time to do anything with it (that, and I've just agreed to buy something big and German which will appear here in December!) and I don't want to have something just for it to sit doing nothing and deteriorating.I really hope someone does have the 21 though, be a real shame to see it scrapped but it's one of those cars that almost nobody is really enthusiastic about and for that reason alone deserves another chance. I'll put a link on RCCC, see if someone there is interested!

Posted

I'd prob go for it - if it was a good bit closer. I've already got a 21 Turbo (phase1) & absolutely love it -although its not been out of the barn in 2 years.I'd happily save it-but am too far away, and too immersed in several other projects right now.I'm sure it'll find a good home

Posted

Still needs saving. Its also eligible for the "pikey scrappage scheme" where I take it down my local scrap metal dealer, he gives me 100 quid to spend on whatever I want, and he scraps the 21.

Sorry, that sounded a bit " give me 100 squid or the reno gets it" but it will have to go, one way or another pretty quickly.

I might even sell my car transporter too. (seperate to the reno, of course)
