Anyone know of a good'un in the 0151/01244 area? Looking for Micra bits and all the Wirral ones are full of 51 plate Laguna's and vectra's. Anything old gets instantly fragged. Is the Legacy yard by Wrexham still going? I recall he had loads of old shite in there last time I went.

If you don't mind a run up to St. Helens there's a rather splendid one there full of old tat.Give 'em a bell on 01744 730088. Just off the Lancs, so a piece of piss to get to from Wallasey...

I drive a truck out of the Knowsley Ind Est and finish at about 3ish. I might give them a call in the morning. Thanks!

Have you tried Chadwick's (Broughton Mills Road, Bretton, Chester) or the one just off Oil Sites Road in Ellesmere Port? The E.Port one is owned by the people who run the part worn tyre place near Westminister Bridge.Failing that, and a real oddball of a place is Hooton Grange scrapyard (if it's still there) close to the M53.

Yes it is. Still got a fair amount of old stuff in it too.

You tried the two in Old Basing and Chineham (Crockford Lane)? I've not used the former but the latter is OK - quite small but they do get some random chod in. Last time I was there (last year), stripping a 406 of some useful bits, a 505 Family estate arrived  Otherwise you could try Padworth Breakers, out near AWE Aldermaston. I can't think of any others that are that local.

The ones in Birkenhead are now too expensive. LJ's (on Cleveland Street) prices their parts in line with what the buyitnow price is on ebay. It used to be a 'don't worry about it', if you had anything under 5 quid, but I recently got "10 quid" for a relay, and I just went faint, and put it down and walked out, before I vomitted. The two good ones are in Queenferry, one on the A55, and then one off the Queensferry roundabout. I discovered the last one recently, and they have real shite like RX7's, Morris Minors and Datsuns ZX's in. What isn't stripped bare, is just piled on top of, I believe some of it is over 10 years old. There is a Scimitar, whose fibre glass is dissolving. The Oil Sites Road is good, there's loads of stuff in there. The people there are nice as well, which is a big bonus. The Hooton dismantlers is crazy, even for that dark, craterous road, and the amount of Cortinas and shite piled outside. The best one out of the lot which is now gone is Cheshire Car Components in Saltney, they had a good turnover of unusual stuff, and the bloke who owned it (Mal) was a gent.I've spent too much time at these places!!

100% agreement. Best scrappy for miles, possibly best ever actually. mal was cheap, cheerful, helpful and friendly and it was a real shame when he went.

Allegations of the yard next next door constantly trying to drop him in it with the E.A saw him off I'm told but cannot confirm this.

Anyhow recent reports tell me he's back again elsewhere in Cheshire. Hope this is true.

Warren: Furbers, Roving Bridge, Whixhall, Whitchurch used to stock loads of older cars. It's also a fantastic place to visit though notoriously hard to find.

Check out PFChris thread on parts for sale on retro rides, he's breaking a G plate GTE, he's in Bristol though.

Cheapest scrapyard in the UK is probably U Pull It (Copart) near York. Any engine £100, any gearbox £40, panels and bumpers £10, electric motors around a fiver. Thousands of cars in neat rows on hardstanding. I'm off there tomorrow for a nose about. My local breaker is now seriously taking the piss.I went with a mate to buy some Mark 3 Fiesta bits. Wiring loom, bit of boot carpet, two manual window regulators and a centre console front section. Guess how much? £30? £40?"That looks like 75 quids worth to me". So we took the loom at £25 and left the rest. There's just no need to take the piss like that. I've been going there for years and have spent quitre a lot of money in there and STILL they feel they can pull my pants down.I priced up the same stuff at U Pull It and it would have been £24 - that's what old car parts should cost, i.e in direct proportion to the value of the car you're fixing.

Hopefully he'll price himself out of business then. I know they (scrapyards) cost a bomb to run and are licenced to the hilt but that kind of pricing structure takes the piss. There's one like that round here (a one make breaker) and he just wants stupid money for stuff. I very, very rarely use it and even then only for same coloured bolt on panels.

Only just saw this, cheers for the info welfare.Apparently Chineham breakers is a bit pricey now, someone in our college wanted something for their project car engine and apparently the main ford dealer did it cheaper than the breakers did......

The Vauxhall dismantlers? I hate ones where you have to stand in the office, ask for the part, they spend 15 minutes doing something in the yard, come back and either say 'No mate', or (hopefully) 'Go and have a look'. I bought an entire bodykit (bonnet, wings, bumpers, everything) for an Astra GSi for 100 quid. I could've quadrupled that next door!

That's the one.

Well I went to U Pull It.BMW Compact engine ECU, rear parcel shelf and a mint owners handbook pack in its leather wallet.£12.50 :D Now THAT'S the kind of money old cars parts should be.

U pull it York have the ideal car for spares and stuff, a GTE convertable and the cost to strip it down to the frame?£100.Why cant there be one nearer here.Going to that scrappie in Aldermaston soon, from the Google satellite pictures it looks proper old school.

It used to be - they emptied it out about 7 years ago for housing redevelopment, failed to get planning permission, then re-opened it a couple of years later. You may be lucky though.Odd that Chineham has got pricey - last year I got 2 15" 406 steel wheels with near-new tyres, a load of dashboard switches (heater controls etc) and two headlamp protectors for £40. I did read in the Gazette recently that it was under new management. Perhaps you pay higher prices now 'cos the new gaffer is less grumpy (not difficult!) than the old one...

As I have never ever ever seen or heard of a poor scrapman why are they always so miserable?

Haven't been there in an age though, so no idea how it operates now.

^^ what he said. This is a good, traditional yard which I've been using it myself for many years (known round here as 'Mally's'). Well worth a visit and 99% of the time, he'll have what you need and the prices are usually good too...
