Been contemplating buying something really quite big of late, something that can accomodate kids + kids bikes + dogs + any other rammle all at the same time for days out etc....

Ruled out so far are:

VW T4's - too expensive

Yank vans - OMG MPG

Disco's / Rangeys - rusty, not enough useable space

Mitsi Delica's - look like they are going to fall over, very expensive

Which has led me back to the shogun/pajero.

Now for years I considered the import version second best, but I'm starting to see something desirable in the super-jazzy 'arab-look' Pajero's.

Question is, shiters, are they just too pikey / council for their own good?

Opinions on issues of 'style' and facts about mechanical quality equally valued.

If I was considering something like that, I'd go for a Isuzu 'BigHorn' Just for the name...

Trooper FTW. Go better, ride better, just as well equipped and turn on a sixpence by 4x4 standards - invaluable when negotiating crowded Tesco car parks.

What's your budget?Older, run-down grey imports do look like pikey chariots to me, especially Pajeros, Estimas and the like. But maybe I'm being a bit of a snob.Have you thought about a UK-spec Nissan Patrol? They are huge, boxy and bulletproof.

Hilux Surfs can be had for not a lot now, mine has been superb, although fitting silly daft wheels and tyres have somewhat ruined the fuel economy!!

LOL. Back to the drawing board then. What are the later Patrols like? I had some experience of earlier ones when I were a lad: Bloody awful, only marginally better than a land rover, and that's not saying much. Land Cruiser VX??

'arab-look'

- so true. but why?Do these only come in one colour?

kids bikes

- bike rack? on volvo estate?does it need to be 4x4?

i can get you a surf for about £300 engine trouble they seem quite popular up here,if you want a toyota my old one is on the bay at the moment we nicknamed it the elephant but boy was it thirsty,

Doesn't have to be 4x4, but does need to have SPACE... our Focus Estate is not a small car but when loaded up with kids and canines feels very claustrophobic - that's why I started to look at VW day-vans - then saw the price had to have a lie down. Something you can not just travel in, but hide from the British weather in, if you see what I mean.

Land Cruiser VX??

Great cars, but they do hold their money - you're looking at >£3K for a half-decent H-plater. They do seem to run forever though, especially the 4.2 TDs.I didn't actually mind my old Patrol to drive - yes it was thirsty and gutless as feck but it cornered surprisingly well (a lot better than the Fourtrak it replaced) and I thought it was a lot more refined than a series 3 Landy. Never driven one of the later UN-peacekeeper-spec Patrols, but heard/read good things about them, although like the VX they are rather large.

Why not have a Delica? If you don't mind scary high centre of gravity, ridiculous diesel consumption. I think they're the best looking and most functional of a large bunch:

Pajero though? I'd rather have a convertible BMW 328ci if I needed to reinforce my pikeyness.

mine was a petrol and i managed to get less than half off what you suggest for it last year while the price of flogo was still reasonable, mind it did have all the toys you could want to keep you amused on a long drive and it felt like the kids where in a different car they where so far away

Hmm, does this serve the same shit whilst cunningly avoiding the pie and key assoc.?

If you can find one..

I dunno, Pajeros always seemed slightly pikey to me, but no where near as much as fronteras. What happened to all the regular non two tone shoguns?Troopers last forever, my uncle has had 4 in the past 18 years.Whatabout a Forester?Thats probably too small however.

J-J: SSssangyong? Are you mental? Yes they are very 'shite' but there's a reason for that, might as well lob £1500 straight down the nearest gulley. Remember the '51' plate one I spied abandoned last year? QED!!!Station: Yes those Delica's do appear to be a better / more flexible bet. But have you seen the prices of them? Just bloody obscene.

Hear you. was just brainstorming. It's funny, I don't associate Pajeros as pikey since we don't have many of that ethnic group up 'ere. To me they say 'redneck' more than anything, especially when adorned with additional front spots (always with 2x yellow bull bar spots) and some sort of nationalist clue sticker on the rear some place ( oddly a Saltire on one end of the bumper ant then a U.S. confereration flag on the other end)Can't be that bad a car though? What about an estate diseasel? or iz u needz powa?

actually there is another waaaay more pikey 4x4 than a pajerotwo wordsTerrano/Maverick.

LOL, my best mates' dad had two Nissan Terrano's first one 96-03, second 03-08, he's now got a Shogun!JJ - would the ones you speak of all have 'alba an aigh' on the bottom of the number plate perchance?

- hmm, was it when you were up in Ayreshire...Yes, I think you hit it on the head.Anyway, if you can get a pajero for cheaper than you'd expect and can get it in an unexpected non- Arabic (lol) colour, then I say buy. (if it's what you want)

Well, I did see -quite a few- like that, especially when we got moved to stay at Craig Tara for week 2, but then again most of the lads I work with have it crudely tattoo'd on themselves somewhere.

Don't those Delicas have an Achilles Heel comparable with the Toyota Liteace's appetite for head gaskets? Oil pump? Water pump? I remember a mate of mine being interested in one and he found that there was some fault endemic to the breed that well and truly put him off. But I've slept since then obviously so I can't remember...Pajeros are utterly pikeytastic IMO. If I wanted something of that ilk I'd go for an old Landcruiser or a Hilux Surf, studiously avoiding anything bearing the word 'Rover' anywhere about its person. Alternatively, if your usual route is well populated with garages and filling stations you might want to consider a Jeep Cherokee

Pog, stop worrying so much about people thinking well of you and your motor.Being thought of as "scum" has advantages. I'm looking forward to the cold rolling in as I can wear my classy winter outfit (scruffy leather jacket, fleece/vest combo, tattered fingerless gloves) and look like some ne'er-do-well from the old days. No one really goes near me when I look like that, which is a bonus. It'd be great to get the Stanza on the road ready for the big chill, the Stanza and Steptoe combo will make me a person truly not to be trifled with.So just get your Pajero, then drive around wearing a hi-vis jacket with a face full of scowl. Embrace the scumness. You'll love it.

Peacekeeper Spec Patrols are huge wobbly things.Insanely huge. I like big cars and the Patrol is bordering on barmy.Diesels are sl-o-o-o-o-o-w and not that good on fuel or refined.Petrol engined ones are a bit quicker, but 14 mpg.Petrol one with multipoint sequential LPG would be do-able.Switchable anti-roll bars on posh ones can make handling truly amusing.

Pajeros, Shoguns and HiVis Serfs all seem to eat cylinder heads lately judging by the number of dead ones I keep seeing in various workshops.

I use to drive a lot of Shogun's in my old job, i really like them, one of the best 4x4's about at the time, the 2.8tdi's was a proper work horse and the swb 3.0 v6 went like shit of a shovel.

The later shape ones (1999-) i thought was a better looking car with flared front wings, they drove far more car like than a Range Rover i thought.

What about a later shape Ford Maverick? My dad's selling his 2002 52 reg one at the moment, has the 3.0 V6 lump and colume shift auto box, might cripple you with the fuel bill though. Only done 62k and is full loaded, think he wants £2500 for it with a years ticket.

It's basically a Uk spec of an American Mazda Tribute i think.

I like the look of the Hilux Surf, but as mentioned earlier they do seem to like a head gasket. And not that big inside, compared to my old 109 Landie which was brilliantly spacious for bikes, gokarts, kids, bits of garden shed....
