Unobtainium becomes available. What to do though...

I have for absolutely ages been looking for a rear door for my R4 F6 van with no success. Until now at least.....

I have managed to find a brand new one, only trouble is it's in Central France.

What I can't decide is if I should bother - if I go fetch it it's gonna be the best part of an 1800 mile round trip and whilst I will then have it, it will have cost me a small fortune. And I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle.

I could of course get Mr Ryanair to take me to France, buy this -

collect the panel and then drive back but that would get me in all kinds of trouble even if it is the Autoshite way. I suppose I could get it sent by DHL etc if the seller was willing to pack it up but I don't have much confidence it would get here in one piece.

Thoughts please - is it worth me having a big panel collecting mission or do I just leave it until I can find one nearer / in the future?

Thought the title was from a spammer!I'd do it, make it as part of a quick holiday! "You only live once!" and I doubt you'll see a door for that again.

Isn't VWP anyway close to it maybe?, He might be able to collect and hang on to it for a bit or something?.

It's a Seat Ronda - tarted up version of Ritmo / Strada which lived on until early '90's I think.

Sod Ryanair. Hitch hike with random truck drivers - and explain to each one about your galant mission to become the king of autoshite. But yes, that Seat is definitley worth bringing over to the UK - I can't imagine many being left - engine bits should be ok to obtain.

You sure it's not called a Malaga?

No, this is a Malaga -

I think that's a Malaga Saloon, Where as the one above is a hatchback, There's a little bit hear explaining it.

Maybe they called it Malaga in the UK to tie it in with the rip-roaringly successful saloon version.I didn't realise it was imported here.

Well it sounds like it could be a great adventure with a proper purpose unlike alot of these 'Wacky' traveling stories I read about and it'd be a bloody good anecdote to tell at a candle light soiree, hell you could even write a book and buy yourself a Mint R4 van with the proceeds...ironic.How rotten is your door? working at a classic car restorers who were restoring an R4 van I've seen a skilled panel beater perform miracles, what you or I might term 'Fucked' was skillfully repaired in the old sense not chuck a load of wag on it.The other point to consider is how much you want it and how likely is it that you'd find another? I say if you really like the van and you are up for an adventure then go for it but don't fly, drive.

If the purchase of the Seat would get you into trouble, I'm sure you could flog it to one of us on your return. Sounds like the way forward to me...

Get it shipped over via DHL mate. I've got more faith in the ability of our European cousins to get stuff to me safely than the British mongs that wreck everything they send to me!

I will be in France for two weeks starting next week, in my pick-up truck. If you can get it to the Vosges region i'll fetch it back to blighty for you if you like?

/\ Thanks Mr B, I'll email the seller to see what can be done. There must be a way to sort it somehow without it ending up costing me multiple fortunes.

So: Unobtainium becomes highly expensive Obtainium, & even with the help of forum members, it's still V.expensive Obtainium. Buy it.Sod's law will ensure that once you have bought said article, there will be another 1000 that will appear on the market at a cheaper price, but these will only appear if you buy the item. Buy it!

Oh bollox. I have a picture of the actual item and it looks to be exactly the same, hinges are on the n/s same as on my van but difficult to tell if they are in some way different from the pic I have. Further investigation required I think. Seller hasn't got back to me either so it's not looking too good :(

/\ No, I haven't actually. Shall do it. Thanks!!French seller hasn't got back to me so I'm rather thinking that I won't be getting it somehow. Maybe he just figures it's easier to sell to someone in France  Time will tell (or not) i suppose...
