My old fatha started his life of driving with a very well used Austin Ruby saloon, I've got the sales invoice for it somewhere....Then in 1959 he had a stroke of luck and won a fair sum of money on the football pools, and purchased a brand new Mini, which he assures me was the first one on the road in Plymouth! The Mini was eventually chopped in against an Austin A40 Countryman, which was possibly a retrograde step but the Countryman's split tailgate made it perfect for lugging around his drumkit. In about 1966 a new job as a sales rep heralded the arrival of a brand new MK2 Ford Cortina, which was followed by another one a few years later, and the all new 'coke bottle' MK3 around 1973. 1977 Saw a change from Ford's to a Vauxhall Cavalier 1600, which came up for replacement in 1981, and fatha actually let me choose from the listed choices, I was tempted by the Morris Ital 1700 and new fangled Triumph Acclaim, but decided on the Talbot Solara! it's five speed gearbox was a revalation, but sadly the clattery engine wasn't  Only 2 years later our eardrums were given a rest when the Talbot was replaced by a Vauxhall Cavalier 1600L, in a very similar duckegg blue colour as the RWD Cavalier we had previously. Again after only 2 years this Cavalier was replaced by another one, this being fatha's last company car, after being made redundant  A MK2 Ford Escort estate provided transport for a couple of years, then he had a bit of a midlife crisis and acquired a 1982 XR3 complete with 'Dukes of Hazzard' airhorns  Then an immaculate Sierra 2.3 ghia estate came along in about 1990, and this car was quite honestly a heap of shit, I spent so much time working on it to keep it on the road  I finally managed to make him get rid of the dreadful Sierra, and sold him my old 1982 BMW 528I, which he maintains to this day was the best car he'd owned, this went in favour of a VW Polo 'breadvan', Peugeot 405 diesel, and his current steed, a Renner Cliod automatic. There you have it, over 50 years of motoring......

My Dad is one of those that has the knack of making a car last. Early / mid 1950's Standard Vanguard - 14 years service, two paint jobs (he was a coachpainter)Mid 60's Hillmax Minx - brought my older brother & sister home.Austin 1800 - car that brought me home. 1984 Triumph Acclaim - bought nearly new from the DATSUN dealer. :D 1988 Honda Ballade 1.5 auto, light met blue, F710 BMS - in over 100k of service all it broke was a starter. From the same dealer as the Acclaim, by this time calling itself NISSAN.1998 Rover 416Si - with the new fangled K series engine.... bought it new with delivery miles on it as a retirement present to himself. Its approaching its 3rd and final chapter of head issues.... Still he has managed over a 100k with it.'51 Hyundai Accent - my sister got a new Polo and gave him this to tide him over while the Rover was sick, it sits locked in the garage as he insists on nursing the Rover on.I have heard a Vauxhall Wyvern mentioned but I think that may have been his fathers...

I believe my dad's first car was an 850 Mini in about 1968, followed by a Sunbeam Imp Sport (I'm half-heartedly looking for one - in white - to present to him as a present for his 65th birthday in a couple of years). Then followed an Austin 1300GT and a Mk2 Cortina estate auto which he had when I was born.Company cars followed from '78 or so - half a dozen Marina 1.3s; a Chrysler Avenger estate; an Ital 1.3 (the first new car he'd ever had, in 1980); a Princess 1.7 (holding the accomodation record, 4 adults and 4 kids in those pre-seatbelt law days); 3 Sierras (2 1.6Ls and a 1.8GL); Mk2 Cavalier 1.8GLi (a flyer); Mk3 Cavalier 1.8GL auto (a slug); an Audi 100 E for six months then a Pug 405 GTX auto estate (mmm, aircon) in '95. Following redundancy and a new job, a secondhand but low-miles Sierra LX (2-litre twincam with carb) was allocated as his "new" company wheels, then a frankly knackered Pug 405 GRDT estate with over 200k on the clock; a new job saw a new Pug 306 GLX 1.6, then a Vectra 1.8LS auto estate, then an Audi A4 1.8T Sport before that company folded in 2003. He then acquired his first personally-owned car in 25 years, the Accord in my signature that my wife now drives, putting 100k on it in 5 years with no problems at all, before getting a company Qashqai 2.0 Tekna 2WD CVT last year. Since he retired a couple of months ago, he now shares my mum's Honda Logo CVT.

Consul/some lorry, basically what was at home, next a Mini, then a Morris 1100, then a Hillman Avenger (think it ran on lpg or something like that), Fiat Miafiore, Toyota Carina II, Audi A4, a Merc C180. There might be more, but that's what I can think of.

Cars I remember.Mk1 Escort estate. Seemed to be broken for a lot of the time. Once heard my dad say "sheet" when trying to change a bulb, so I went and asked my Mum why...not popular! Then no car. GAAAAARGH!Then a metallic bronze Hillman Hunter. Rusty but with overdrive. Then a Renault 9 Broadway! This had such luxuries as a sunroof, five-speed gearbox and auto-reverse cassette! This would have been about 1988, so only a couple of years old. A company motor. Fancy eh?More later - food now.

Fatha Futur:Black Mini (know nothing at all about this)Mk1 Escort 2 door. 1100 cc.Mk2 Escort 2 door. 1100 cc.Mk2 Escort 4 door. 1100 cc. (the first car I ever went in). NAR 77V. The car is dead but the plate's on some top end luxury thing now. It died horribly when the engine block split. An event I remember clearly. Then the transition to FWD.Mk2 Cavalier hatch. 1600 cc in metallic blue, was okay.Replaced with G-plate Mk3 Cavalier hatch. Also a 1600 but this one literally fell to pieces through rust. Used to consume clutch cables with a frightening appetite and was the worst car he ever owned. I hated the thing as it would break down on the way to anything remotely enjoyable, such as Thorpe Park.Mk1 Mondeo hatch in wine red. This was a dull, slow 1800 that never rusted or broke down. A good car really, but was written off.Mk2 Mondeo Ghia hatch in dark blue. At last a 2 litre. This was fine but seemed less well made than the Mk1. It rusted and the bumpers fell off.Mk3 Mondeo Ghia X in metallic blue. This is another 2 litre, with a unique gin-palace yacht style white leather interior. Lovely car but SLOOOWW! It weighs more than the Starship Enterprise and the Duratec, good that it is, cannot cope with that much lard. I told him to get the V6. He didn't.That's it for now, though I fear the future is Focus shaped.Mutha Futur:Mini Clubman Traveller in bright orange. Probably worht quite a bit nowadays, ended its life on fire after an electrical fault.Mk1 Fiesta, white 1100 cc. Was a nice looking car, don't remember much about it.Mk2 Fiesta XR2 in Dolphin Grey on a C-plate. The best car ever owned by a family member. It was immaculate. Turning up to School in one of these, in Essex, in a time when it mattered was a rather good feeling. The older boys used to ask me about it and would han about a the gates to see it arrive. Was the only Fast Ford owned by a parent, so had loads of cachet.Replaced, tragically, by an S-plate 1.25 Zetec S in Moondust Silver. I actually drove this, and it was willing but had no personality after the XRThat went rusty so was chopped in for a Y-reg 2.0 litre Focus 5 door in dark blue. That was a great car, however Mutha never drove it to anything like its potential. Spent its life going up and down the A12 at a sedate pace. Waste of a very capable car. That has now gone, in its place a Silver Focus 5 door, whcih is the same but a Mk2. Heavier with dangerously light steering. Nippy in a straight line.In terms of other family my Uncle used to have an automatic Punto, but that' s it. 1980-ish to date. Apart from he XR and the Escorts it's woeful. God knows where I get my enthusiams from, it can't be genetic.

Just quizzed the old chap and he can't remember anything before 2005! Too much gin. I recall him going on about a Austin 7 that became a chicken hutch, many Morris 8's and Standard 10's, Morris Minors and Oxfords (including the van I was almost born in) then Ford Anglias, then Triumph 1300, 1500, Dollies and Toledos, then Triumph 2000 and Allegro; 18TS, Sapphire GLS, 405GTX then a STDT, then a Vectra 2.0CDX, then 318i now a Rover 75.

Mother had Minor, Fiat 127 1050CL, R11 TXE, Peugeot 205 Style, now a Megane RXE

Here, in a partial, (and to my shame, a shockingly handsome couple - how can these two have such an ugly kid?) is one of his first motors. He can't remember what it is even though he bought it on his 21st birthday. Anyone know? Doors look Minorish, but that headlamp/bumper doesn't. Maybe it does.

The aged parentals have had a slightly odd sequence of vehicles, apparently finding a type that suited for a while and sticking to it. They moved to four wheels soon after my fat arse hit the floor of the delivery room one winter's day in the mid-60s...To 1966: a series of Triumph motorcycles, with and without chairs, culminating in a T110 Thunderbird, VGT3011965-67: Mini 850 van, ACA354B1967-73: another Mini van, DJC702E1973-76: Hillman Avenger 1500, EFK281L; back seats!1976-84: Hillman Avenger 1600 Super, TWP159R; I learned to drive in this one - as did my sister, before she wrote it off after an argument with one of the Malvern Hills...1982-92: Opel Rekord 2.0 Berlina, LNX 902V; they had a car each! After the Avenger died, Mum used my Citroen GS while I was away at university1989-98: Vauxhall Carlton 2.2CDi, D501BFH; I needed the GS back, and they'd bought a caravan... 1992-2006: Vauxhall Carlton 2.6CDX, J504FUY; the caravan went quicker... 2006-on: Audi A6 Allroad; what caravan? All bean tins and Shanghai skyscrapers now, except the Audi.

After giving up his BSA Bantam and side-car my Dad got a Ford Anglia Estate. This was followed by a Mk1 Cortina Estate, then two Mk3 Cortina Estates. Then a Colt Sigma saloon, follwed by another Sigma and then a Galant. The Galant was replaced by 2 Hyundai Pony (my sister-in-law still has the last one) and now he has a Kia Carens. My Mum's first car was a Mk3 Zodiac Executive Estate, bench seat, column change auto, black with a red roof - brilliant car! Replaced by a Mk3 Cortina written off on the NCR in an accident caused by Richard Beckinsale in a Thames TV van. This was replaced by a Colt Galant, then a Volvo 343, then her last car was a Chevette Estate.

Dads first cars had two wheels  I've posted this one before.

There were at least two Nortons, a 500 I think and this is a 650 Dominator 99 if I remember right.

He "learnt" how to drive to get his car licence in a freind's Elva.

Posted Image

His first car was an Austin 16 I think -there's a couple of good photos at my mums. Might have been a couple of similar Austins but then came a Mk2 Jag.

Posted Image

(The Elan replaced the friend's Elva and is still in the same ownership)

That got sold to finance the house when my parents married in '71.

First car I can remember is a Triumph 2000 (2500?) estate. There were also a couple of Datsuns that were rapidly loosing metal. A couple of company cars I remember after them include M2 Granadas.

An SD1 3500SE was the first car I remember him wanting and finally being able to afford. RGV737W, so it was probably about 5 years old when bought. My mum crashed it a couple of times as she didn't get on with the Auto box.

Then he finally got the Vitesse he wanted in the first place. A574THK so again about 5 years old I reckon.

Ended up overbored and quite heavily breathed on. It was lowered a bit and used to ground out occasionally when he fitted 55 profile front rubber. I got to drive it once, took him out in it the winter before he died in '96.

There was a before my time Austin 12 (perhaps) followed by:New c.1960 Mini 850 that my Mum learned to drive in;New 1964 Morris 1100, first car I remember, traded in for -New 1967 Austin 1100 in glorious beige, followed by -New 1970 Austin 1300 Mk II in, er, dark beige (do you see a pattern?)New 1972 Vauxhall Viva SL with Metallic Starmist Blue paint and Blue Ambla seats. For some reason it became a difficult starter in 1975 and funds were tight so it was replaced by a secondhand 1974 Austin Allegro 1100 base model with Quartic wheel, in a sort of off-tangerine.One month after the Mk I Fiesta went on sale they bought a new 1977 Ford Fiesta 1.1L in... beige. That lasted a year before being replaced by a new 1978 Ford Fiesta 1.1L with optional rear wash wipe and Signal Yellow paint. After two resprays of the Signal Yellow paint (!) and perma damp carpets caused by an unfixable leak from new, that was replaced by a new 1982 Ford Fiesta Bravo II with two-tone Blue over Silver finish. That was the first car they had that had a radio fitted. Even so, it only had MW/LW. In some sort of mid-life crisis, that car was replaced by a new Ford Escort XR3i in 1983. Optional black paint, standard heavy steering. By 1986 the XR3i had gone and they had a car each, New 1986 Volvo 360GLS and secondhand 1985 Volvo 340GL. Both were traded for a 1989 Volvo 340DL that was their last car before becoming mine prior to despatching to the great scrappage in the sky. None of these vehichles survives according to the DVLA. Boo-hoo.
