Andrew353w Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Ah well, it's wrong and it shouldn't happen.... but it has! Walter the Wartburg has "broken his duck" and incurred the wrath of The Hertfordshire Constabulary while doing 42 mph in a 30 zone in Rickmondsworth. I thought that speedometer wasn't too accurate....I successfully challenged TWO tickets issued while I was driving my daughter's British Mini, as the ticket described the vehicle's manufacturer as "Mini" when it should read "Rover". No such luck this time, as the DVLA's records are completely correct. The only silver lining to this £60 cloud is a chance to view the photographic evidence on line, as you also can with Wiltshire Constabulary, but NOT with Thames Valley Constabulary (come on, Morse and Lewis!) Having so done, I have to say that the car looks great; the paintwork's gleaming & the number plate, still a black and white one, is lovely and clean. That'll teach me to wash it regularly! I now have this picture as my screensaver on my computer. Now I know the Wartburg CAN do 42 mph UPHILL!Lesson learnt!Andrew353w =
pompei Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Bad luck! I've never had a ticket which is more by good luck than judgement I have been reckless in the Fiat 500 - in an old "slow" car you think it can't happen but 30 mph is the same in a Wartburg as in a Ferrari.Well done on your two previous successful challenges

Negative Creep Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Ye God man you were speeding? Think how many schoolkids and fluffy rabbits you must have run down as soon as you went over 30

That'll teach me to wash it regularly! I now have this picture as my screensaver on my computer.-excellent, I've always secretly wanted to get a speeding ticket of the photo variety (of course I don't actually -want- a ticket) - I'd just enjoy the novelty of getting a pic of me driving.Funny talking of grossly inaccurate speedometers - I noticed yesterday that the drum type speedo on the BX actually leapt up nearly 10 mph after straightening up after a pronounced curve! So it was actually under reading by near 10mph in the curve and corrected on the straight. Oddly the CX has a very accurate speedo - also a turning drum type and doesn't seem affected by curves in the road. It always seems to agree completely with those roadside digital "your speed" things (assuming those are accurate that is)Anyone else got a shite speedometer?
aled Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 i had one on my imp that used to read 30ish then shoot up to 60ish then back down to 30ish then back up to---- you get the idea.run it for about five years until i decided to chainge it.
dollywobbler Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 At a real 60mph, the 2CV says about 65, the Mini says 51 and the Moggy about 55 on the speedo. I have to remember which rule applies or use the sat-nav.Alfa was wonderful and the speedo just randomly cut out. Haven't driven the Bond far enough to know how accurate the speedo is...
Dukestar25 Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 It could have been worse... My brother was caught speeding in a Sherpa (or LDV Pilot if you must )... How embarassing!!! Glad you're seeing a good side to the situation though, I'd have been gutted (whether the car looked good or not)...
Milford Cubicle Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 My 405's speedo wobbles quite dramatically between 0 and 50MPH, I remember a similar problem afflicting my grandad's 309, so it must be a Peugeot speciality.
pogweasel Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Speedo's. LOL.Every fricking Land Rover I have ever had has wobbled between 0-50 at any given opportunity. Of course once beyond 50 you kind of know, as the noise / arseache / ship-at-sea steering tells you so. Speedo in my van over-reads a fair bit, about 10%, which is unacceptable in this day and age really. Fugging peasant shit.

Fugging peasant shit.Is it a Kangoo or Berlingo you have?Somebody at worked got caught at 83mph in our 1.5 Kangoo, which isnt bad going. This was on the A1, where I assume the limit would be 60mph..

Chris_W_Q4 Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Caught doing 36 in a 30 by a Truvelo at night. Result - No points but Sunday afternoon lost in a tedious Northumbria Police speed awareness course One interesting thing - 30% Of the attendees (a good cross section of the public including old duffers) thought the speed limit on a 60mph national speed limit A road was.... 40 mph.
UglyAmerican Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Managed a ticket for 52 in a 30 in my Datsun, first week away at uni back in the day. Eventual phone call to tell my parents, you can imagine, was a disaster.

Mmmm. Sounds more to me like they were estimating low to make themselves look safe so they pass. "Yes officer, if I ever find myself unsure of the speed limit I proceed at 12mph until I see a sign". Wouldn't honestly think 36 in a 30 is tuggable, I'm advised by a local rozzer that they use 10% + 4mph, so you'd be pulled at 37mph in a 30 but not 36mph. Still, he also tells me that all forces differ, and if you'e doing 31mph in a 30 and look dodgy you'll be tugged for 'speeding' just so they can take a look around.
