I'd be happy to rock one as a daily but the "sudden horrific oil burning" syndrome of the 1.8 vvt puts me off and I've read they're just not as nice as the Carina that preceded them.

 

No VVTi in the first gen Avensis.

 

The 7AFE (1.8) and 3SFE (2.0) are - I would say - absolutely unbreakable.  I ran my old one for about 50,000 miles without lifting the bonnet.  (I wasn't always mechanically sympathetic)

I've owned a B5 generation A4 quattro, and I modified it. Never again. It ate money like nothing else I've owned.

I'd be really interested to see how reliably that makes 200hp from that generation of TDI engine, considering they only went up to 150 (I think) as standard, at that age.

AFN is 130 (same as my Passat, although mine's 110). PD engines went to 150 I think.
