'Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1869, Cassel was educated at Harrow and won a scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he obtained a First in Jurisprudence in 1892. He was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1894 and went on to become a Queen’s Counsel in 1906, making him one of the top legal figures in the country. In the 1910 general election he was elected to the House of Commons as Conservative member for St Pancras West, later serving as a Captain in the London Regiment in World War One before being appointed as Judge Advocate General in 1915, an onerous position that put him in supreme control of the Courts Martial in the armed forces.'
