It's far from impossible, but it's a bit more complicated than most places in Europe. This website is about transfer of ownership within Italy. If you're exporting a car it's not quite as strenuous or expensive. The main stumbling block, as explained here, is that until registration is transferred the previous owner is legally responsible for all taxes etc relating to the car. Hence many private sellers are unwilling to flog to a foreigner in case you bugger off without completing the necessary paperwork and leave them taxing their shitty Fiat Ritmo for the rest of time or whatever. I also think there is some complicated thing about returning the old number plates (so you can't just drive home, as it will technically be unregistered). Basically it's a load of hassle and you want a resident on the ground to do all this for you and save you a bit of red tape. If you are really 100% serious I know somebody who does this almost full time who would probably take care of it for you, but his fee is probably not insignificant either...

Thanks, that ties in pretty much with what little I've read on the matter too.  It's a kind offer but in all fairness I don't want the hassle or complication and as you say it's not going to be cheap either so I'll just hop over the border by train when it's time to start the trip back and pick something up in France.  Mmm, 2CV...

The Junkman makes some good points.  Those Axel things are odd, are they a runout Visa derivative?

Look a bit like one but they have a GS engine. Think they have metal suspension too

I seem to remember this on one of the auction sites over norfolknweigh a while back. Put up on this very thread.

Resurfaced on the bay of dreams in my local manor. Looks like he has never had a chance to unload it.

Wonder if its a genuine reason for moving it on or in the immortal words of a regular contributor 'Its Fucked'

If I had the money, time and most importantly any type of knowledge of how to fix it. WOULD

Let me guess the front brake works by selecting 3rd gear , selecting the wipers and pressing the horn simultaneously? I mean WTF is it all about??

It's an Earnshaw Gumby Diamond!
