The VW LT engine in these is pretty awful - a thunderously noisy, laggy, inefficient diesel. Why do I want another one?!?!?!

This one needs a set of glow plugs apparently, they're a pig to change - the D24 engine manual recommends removing the injection pump! You don't need to but it's very awkward and fiddly.

Someone needs to buy this to stop me from burdening myself with another car I don't need. This is dirt cheap for one of these!

Just change the front 4 plugs it will still start. Personally I love the power delivery of this engine and the noise. De facto jobs on purchase: 1- decat it. You don't need a cat on something this old. 2- turn fuelling screw up half a turn. 3-block off EGR valve.

These mods free up a surprising amount of power and economy and make it much more of a driver's car. They are good for towing too. Mine is currently on 247k and pulls like a train (a class 37- makes lots of noise and chucks out loads of clag)

Duroplast (sp?) I believe it was called. Impossible to destroy without poisoning all involved, apparently.

yeah, that's my understanding of them, a special communist material that makes you wonder why we all worried about a little thing like asbestos

pretty sure there is a rodded V8 one kicking about somewhere

It was pretty nasty stuff. Then again so was most things invented around tat time. Basically the factory took in cotton waste, shredded it into the consistency of cotton wool then built up layer upon layer of this with phenolic resin in between. The whole three foot thick wad was then placed into a giant press where heat and pressure was applied for several hours. The resulting rough panel was then trimmed to size using an unguarded six foot high bandsaw.

Been to the factory, saw the machinery and presses. Bloody frightening.

Depending on how you look at, an early form of recycling maybe? Cotton fibres were a waste product and I think the phenolic resin was too from ink manufacturing. A clever solution. To use what you had to replace something you didn't (steel)

Whilst the panels don't rot the steel frame behind certainly does!

Didn't they try and develop some kind of microbe to "eat" the duroplast just to get rid of it?

Now with 4 photos - a kind of Plumtree drip-feed.

The rear view shows it to be a pov-spec 'Reflex' (elicits knee-jerk reaction to buy it?).

One of our Scotoshite mob has N753 VAN, a much more agreeable 855 T-5 GLT.
