A lack of carte gris can be a problem as you need a date of registration. You can get a dating certificate from the factory or owners club but unless you have a date of reg you can't do a NOVA. Or you can but it gets a bit involved when you amend a NOVA so best to leave the NOVA until you have the date of reg bit of a pain but not the end of the world probably still easier than registering in France

Well if no one knows the registration date, can't you just tell them any old date?

That sounds too simple. I guess you need proof...
