1989 Sachsenring Trabant 601

My brother was overtaken by a Trabant on the autobahn in 1990.The people in it were overjoyed to have passed a Western car.My brother was driving a 903cc Panda.

They were a very common sight in Holland during the late Sixties, mostly the earlier 600 model.   I think the church minister where my Grandad was living had one.   They were presumably significantly cheaper than the home-grown DAFs.....

I still kick myself for not buying one when they were cheap! Would love one just to annoy the 'Jones' brigade at my local Waitrose. Especially love the estate versions. 

 

A mate had one in the early 90's he liberated from Germany, was an absolute scream to drive (esp. given my love for 2-stroke bikes), on it's genuine East German 'Karl Marx' crossply tyres (I kid you not, that's what they were marked as).

Also useful in car parks too but don’t do it if the exit leads straight onto the main road...

Famous Schlumberger ignition was standard on 504cc as of September 73.
