Yes, I was thinking, is it cheating if you have one of those cars that's normally a hatch but you've got it as a saloon, GS, MkI Astra, MKI Passat, Alfasud etc

Good call on those, I hadn't thought of that.I have just had a bit of a google on the Passat, as I thought you might be talking bollocks, but no, they did two totally different arse arrangements. MENTAL.

I prefer saloons for driving - less road noise, feel tighter and I reckon they often look better too. But sadly with two pooches I'm estate-bound, even a hatchback is looking more and more impractical every day. I absolutely refuse to get a van with windows in a la Blingo or whatever that Renault thing is. And stuff like the Fusion can toss off, even that doesn't know what it's meant to be.... a Fiesta with added height for no practical reason.

whatever that Renault thing is.

Kangoo. And yes they are rubbish. That said I have done about 4000 miles in mine so far and nothing has gone wrong (yet). And it's ideal for luzzing the dogs into when it's time for a 'big walk'.

Count me in:

extra points for ebay-style 'just washed to make car look better' photo?

And now for some controversy.....

I always assumed the Espero was a stubby-booted hatchback!

If you were to look at the beautiful rear-end of one, you would have no doubts about its saloon credentials.

I bet owners of fliplight 200SXs squint at the back end of their cars and pretend they've got an Espero instead. I would.

Saloons blow major league goat pipe, give me a hatchback or an estate any day!

I can sort this out for you - bring your saloons over to me and I will get rid of them, leaving you free to buy 5-door Metros etc.

I suppose I'd better join in.

Etc, etc. Mustard mitt though, my daily wheels do tend to be large, quick estates.

The non estate MkII Passat always looked like a hatch but I think that was saloon only

Yeah that's the 'fugger'.At the moment we has a Saxo, which permenantly has the back seats down and two dog cages in the back. Desperately need something more practical so we can maybe get people AND dogs in the back, or dogs and luggage.I just really can't see myself driving a Kangberlingoo style thing every day, I'd want something posher. But then I'd feel bad when the dogs went for a 'big walk' and made said posh estate car look and smell like a pigsty. And having just cambelted and clutched the Saxo, and it's dented and scratched enough not to make much on eBay, I don't really wanna flog that. Poo.It was much easier when I had one non-bouncy dog, and a saloon car I didn't care about.... dog on back seat, sorted :)

As high Vizier of saloon-ness I'll try to clarify a few things. The Imp does count as it is clearly a thre box design, the boot may be at the front; but it is still a distinct boot. Saloon versions of standard hatchbacks are allowed and worth extra points. Anyone who intentionally buys an Orion, Belmont or Nova saloon is a shite hero worth celebrating. The Type 3 also is admissable for the same reasons as the Imp.Saloons DO NOT blow major goat pipe.Lifestyle vans instead are rhino-rapingly awful.

Are extra bonus points added to shiteness for odd spec? As an ex Hire car, my Sapphire has keep fit windows, central locking, and a glass sunroof. Cheap seat trim, and the half bolstered front seats, and rear fixed seats with no ski-flap either. Proper boggo spec, but just has an L badge on the bootlid. Even down to the orange indicators and non smoked rear lamps. I must get it legal again soon.

My Sapphire was a D-plate 1.6L and it didn't even have a sunroof- the only Sapphire I've knowingly seen without one.

Despite being panned for its tired old mechanicals I've always thought the Espero was a really handsome car.

I think it looks quite yankified! Like a Chrysler maybe?

I reckon that's only allowable if you drive it backwards everywhere so the boot and engine are at the correct ends.

I'm bringing in some ammunition for the fight...

Alfa 155Q4. Not your ordinary Alfa.......

Plus of course

Although if I'd had the choice, I would have picked the fastback version
