Number plate transfer

Hey shites.

I want to transfer a number plate from my Dad's old car onto another. Both cars are in my name, the donor car has been on continuous SORN for around 3 years, so there shouldn't be much a problem transferring the plate.

BUT...

The donor was scrapped a while back and I didn't send the logbook off and kept it on SORN until I got round to transferring the plate. The paperwork i'm filling out says the donor may need to be inspected, which won't be possible as it's now probably re-bar in a Chinese flyover.

Do the DOOVLA routinely inspect cars that are having their plates transferred? Is it worth even bothering?

Not if it's been continually sorned and no change of owner has occurred, if they do tell them the scrap man bought it a few minutes ago..

I thought a vehicle had to be taxed for the plate to be transferable. Has that changed?

Taxed or on continuous unbroken SORN for a maximum of 5 years.

Do it online.

Transfer the plate onto retention. It will tell you instantly if there is a ‘ problem’- like the scrapper reporting it destroyed.

If all’s well, they will give you a Reference number ( make a note or screen dump it)

Then seperately apply to transfer it onto the Recipient, using the Reference they supply. Jobs a good un.

If you don’t immediately apply it to an alternate vehicle, they’ll post out a Certificate a few days later. Valid 10 yrs.

Instant online rejection doesn’t mean ‘ no’, just not an immediate ‘ yes’. Needs human intervention....

DVLA don’t inspect anymore- no facilities, but do use several outside Agencies, if needed. But, it costs them so they are wary, on something l8ke this.

If they don’t know, it’s unlikely to be refused.

As others have said, they don't seem to care anymore.

When I retained the number off my written off V70 , I might * have forgotten to tell them it was a burnt out shell, as I thought it would be easier. I couldn't do it online because it had been untaxed before I got it, so had to send a form off, same as when I put my number on it.

All was going well until the insurance company reported it unfit for the road,in the middle of the transfer. DVLA phoned me to check that was the case , I was expecting a bollocking and a threat to inspect. But they weren't bothered, just checking in case I wasn't aware.

They don't inspect anymore just send out a letter telling you they require pics of said vehicle, from memory mine asked for front and rear of car with plate clearly visible plus side and chassis plate or number,

Sent of pics and no probs.

Thanks for all the replies, I’ll get cracked in with it over the weekend.

I tried the application online but as one if the cars was built before 1998 I have to do it by post.

Just tried to look up my V70 on the MOT history check site and the reg number no longer exists! Turns out the plate transfer has gone through- no inspection- woop woop!
