There are 2 relays for the heated screen. If it only does half try those.

Is it sad that I’m now scouring the weather forecast and hoping for another frost to switch the relays.

Ordered a rubber boot liner as although it’s giffered externally, I’ll feel guilty scuffing up interior with building rubble and house building parephenalia.

Also ordered a spot of leather dye for for the lightly scuffed bolster.

Two wheel bearings on order from gsf. Absurd £79 each but a total of £65 a pair with one of their limited time* 59% off offers.

Slight wear on my steering wheel, must resist ultimate giffer wheel too...

My Ghia X had that style of wheel. :D

Mine's got that steering wheel, it's my least favourite thing about it. Gets all sweaty and yucky on hot days.

If exactly half the screen isn't working its likely to be a wire come off behind the A pillar or a relay\fuse.  Definite potential DIY fix

The cruise is cancelled and resumed by the RES button - I am not aware of any time limit between turning it on and setting it though, certainly isn't with mine.  I actually find it quite simple to use once you're used to it.  If it isn't working at all check that the horn works - in my old Granada the fuse being gone for the horn also took out the cruise control.

Other than that good buyage.

Posted

Cruise is a little curious. You can set it on and then tap set or res, etc and the little icon appears on the dash but it doesn’t hold any speed no matter what I press.

I’ve been away with work so not had chance to bugger about with it yet.

In other news a new impact driver has arrived so once the wheel bearings come I’ll be doing those, after I’ve worked out how to modify my hydraulic log splitter or trolley jacks into makeshift presses...pretty sure no disasters are imminent trying that out :)

Giffer wheel will have to wait as spends have gone on the important bits.

Posted

Rear bearings not difficult at all on these. Whip the rear disc off and there’s some cut outs with enough space to undo the female torx bits. Quick wack from behind and undo the ABS sensor and your there.

Chance on finding a seized or leaking rear caliper along the way, these shit calipers for fun.

Posted

Thought I’d do a few bits in the dark as everyone had gone to bed.

Scuffed leather bolster versus a thimble full of the £6 quids worth of leather balm.

Bang! and the grey is gone!

Thought I’d check the fuses and relays for the heated window, very impressed with Ford design for removing glovebox to get at fuses. Much time saving.

Less impressed at random bonnet release with a goddamn key behind the badge?!? Much time lost. Car is spotless under bonnet.

All fuses and relays correct so cleaned contacts and will retry when the frost comes.

Impact driver and these arrived today too.

Wife taking kids to see relatives in Darlington on Sunday, I’m not going as I will be working hard on kitchen - Definitely no breaks to fit wheel bearings whatsoever*

Got round to changing insurance over today ‘No additional charge, Sir’ in other words, it’s cheaper but we’ve trousered the difference.

As the Giffer X will be involved in ferrying builders rubble around, I felt obliged to protect the minty interior, hence...

Taxed this thing yesterday as will be driving o'er them Pennines tomorrow so took it for a quick spin to realise all that pulling and poking of fuses and relays to try to get the full window demisting has reset the computer and requires a radio code now. Much googling suggests I can find it for free as it is one of the things that isn't in the giffer history.

Stuffed a new battery in the remote to improve unlocking range as I'd found a pack of CR2032s to incorrectly fix my dad's non-blipping Mazda remote (its supposed to use the thinner used CR2025's but who has them lying around?).

The rain prevented attempts to repair wheel bearing over weekend so no radio equals a lot of humming to blank out the noise of a grumble wheel bearing :)

The impending arrival of HooliSiC's Saab and the fact I've just rolled over 900 miles of warbly v6 mileage in the Mondeo is forcing an update.

I haven't fixed the radio yet as my usual trick of using a couple of weed matting/ground staples to pull the radio didn't work and the £1.95 proper pin tools hadn't arrived before the Mondy was pressed in to action to take the ohdearme entourage for a weekend away in Kirkby Lonsdale.

Early start and cold temps allowed for testing of the quick defrost screen and it is sadly not fixed on the passenger side but early start also left me with a car full of sleepers and just me and the gently twisting joy of the A65 all to myself.

Turns out a Mk3 Mondeo is surprisingly good steer.

Things liked

- Huge boot

- Comfy (not quite Saab) seats

- Engine noise, I keep prodding the throttle for no reason to get the low thrummy noises

- Car is right track and wheelbase to change lanes on motorway without hitting any cats eyes (win)

- Terror of others as they see a fully gifferated Mondeo draw along side them in a parking bay.

Things not liked (Nothing major)

- Why does pulling indicator wash rear window not windscreen?

- Who puts the front windscreen wash on end of the stalk?

- Climate needs a setting of 221/4 degrees as 22 is too cold and 22.5 is too warm.

- Contact on remote has stopped unlocking car but locks and boot still pops.

- Still smells of giffer

Things to do now I has spare car

- That wheel bearing (both fronts if I get brave)

- A knock on rear suspension over bumps, to investigate

- Oil/filters/plugs and Auto fluid

Word of caution if you’re preparing to do the front wheel bearings, you need to drop the subframe, not all the way, but enough to get the angle to separate the bottom ball joints. They are an absolute Colin hunt to get apart on these.

Wisdom says you need subframe alignment tools to bolt it back up, but aligning it by eye to where the previous ‘dirty’ marks are should be close enough. Would advise alignment afterwards because it will probably chew the front tyres to bits otherwise

All front suspension jobs on Mk3 Mondeos are bastards - fact

Posted

Knocking on rear suspension will almost certainly be ARB drop links, fortunately cheap and relatively easy

I'm really pleased you are liking it. :)

I got rid of the magic tree that was in it when I picked it up but it was clear that the giffer smell had come from the guy who had it before me for 10 weeks...he smoked like a chimney.

Was going to do my usual alignment trick of a bit of masking tape stuck to the shock before attempting to drop it.

If indeed these are bastards, and not as easy as the comically simple Autodoc YouTube (on a very clean car) I might just send it to the garage round the corner but I’d like to have a crack at it first.

WCPGW?

Ah yes, I have seen the very same autodoc vid, don’t believe a word of it. Bottom ball joints are an absolute pig to separate on these, even if they only went together 20 seconds ago

They’re not insurmountable, but be prepared for a fight

Front bearings on these, if consign that job to the garage if it’s hundred quid or so.

As said about the drop links, could also be the rear subframe bushes or possibly the exhaust. Where it goes over the rear subframe it can twat itself on it. I just wrapped an old shirt round it to stop the noise. Worked.

Posted

My MK3 needed rear ARB drop links and subframe bushes all at once, labour was quite expensive for the subframe bushes so naturally I sold it and bought another car.

The radio clips also failed to remove the radio from the dash and there may have been a momentary* loss of composure attempting to remove the device in the small window of time afforded this evening without kids and wife bothering me.

Suffice to say I am looking for used oem radios on eBay as I don’t think it was supposed to come apart quite how it has now done so.

I should not touch things.

I spent ages trying to get my Denso out with a set of cheapo keys from ebay. Three of them worked as they were supposed to, the fourth didn't release the latch, and then steatfastly refused to come out again. In the end I snapped the ring off and left the key bit in there. My radio reception is still absolutely shit, but I did manage to fix the GPS reception once I'd finally realized that the aerial plugs into the CD unit in the boot rather than into the head unit.

Giffer x was pressed into to tip run duty this morning, a fine job it did to. Only gripe is the seat backs are 60:40 but the seat bench isn’t so it necessitated removal of child seat to maximise penguin carrying capacity.

There is a strong possibility after 1000 miles of entertainment, this is being swapped for other vehicles.

Ford impresses shocker.
