Mercedes Vito 113 Petrol - Any feedback/advice

Hi all

 

Just looking for any info on the Vito Petrol and if anyone has had one or worked on one? a rust free 2001 plate has come up for sale near me and I am quite interested but there really isnt much info on the petrol version..

 

Any advice appreciated

The fact it’s rust free is a surprise. I looked at a few a while back with a view to doing a camper van and wanting to avoid the vw scene tax but they were rotten as a pear. If the bodywork is in good condition then that’s a great start.

The engines are really good (from my limited experience) and a petrol one should be a lot cheaper than diesel. The fact it has no rot is a major plus, they were truly dreadful for tin worm.

I know of a v230 auto thats still neimg used plated as a limo; I've travelled in it many times and its a smooth bus; owner said it does 25 mpg and can see 30 on a run

Rust rust rust and...did I say rust. Be very careful - have a really good look underneath. I considered one of these and gave up looking.

Speak to Barry Cade, he's converted a Vito into a camper & seemed to know all the foibles of them as he went along.

There is no such thing as a rust free Vito

A 113 will be a 2.3 petrol engine I think, same as the v230 mpv version.

 

Will be dismal on fuel and not rust free unless its been kept in a carcoon in the Sahara.

 

There will be little interest in it as most people don't want a petrol van, unless they do well for export.

Or to drive in the London Low Emmission Zone. It took me months to find a suitable old petrol van for London

Don't they have to be Euro 4?

 

Don't reckon a 2001 van will be.

Really am in two minds as had my heart set on a Hiace or old Smiley transit but this really does look good (to my eyes!)

Hiace is the better van by far. Smiley Transits are great but still too rusty.

I had a 113 auto camper - awful on fuel but pretty rot free - they do exist with little rust but not easy to find!

 

Was great to drive and apart from economy loved it! Only issue i had was a collapsed coil spring but that could happen to anything

WOW, that is mint... proper WOOD. I've had a 638 now for a while and I love and hate it in equal measures. I love the looks and the way it drives, but cannot believe how quickly it rusts, and I've owned loads of old Fiats. Don't worry about the engine, it's an old m111 lump which are proper old Benz (nearly) and its a manual which is good, as autos seem a bit flaky. Bodywise, the doors rust, the sills rust, the inner wings rust, the subframe mountings rust, the wings rust, the side doors rust, the tailgate rusts.... you get the picture. Mine looked really tatty but underneath was good, but I've still had to go out every fortnight or so with sandpaper,primer and paint. I've given up trying to blend repairs now- I just brush it.. But I still love it and worry for the day when it's too much to carry on.

 

If I had some cash I'd have that one in a heartbeat, dip it in cavity wax, put my camper stuff in it and keep it forever.
