petermcpete Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Hi all,I've done something unnecessary and bought the Toledo in Italy and am currently partway through the collection caper home.In Freiburg and run into potential difficultly - the wheel bearing sounds pretty ropey. I'm planning on doing 250 miles to Spa tomorrow, is that sensible? Then on Friday 150 miles to Bruges where I'm staying for 2 nights. Video in next post of bearing. When I'm safely home I'll update with many pics, but a couple of teasers coming up. Cheers,Pete johngarty, Split_Pin, richardthestag and 9 others 12

Tamworthbay Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Is the drum dragging? Looks like that has got hot and melted the grease. So first check the brakes then repack the bearing with grease and set it up, then check it every few miles. I found the ones on my Dolomite needed nipping up a bit after about 50 miles and again a bit later. purplebargeken and trigger 2
dollywobbler Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Yeah, that doesn't sound great to be honest. Can you repack it? As suggested above, looks like a sticky brake has got it too hot so all of the grease has leaked out. EDIT - and, YOU BLOODY HERO!

Tamworthbay Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 And if the option to get it out is there give it a damn good clean in meths or brake cleaner before repacking.
petermcpete Posted September 12, 2018 Author Posted September 12, 2018 It's front discs, on that side one of the pads is really low, almost on metal - went through the Alps yesterday which didn't help! I'll see if I can get to a position where I can repack it.
Tamworthbay Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 That is probably what’s done it but make sure you don’t have a sticky piston. petermcpete 1
artdjones Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Don't do it up too tight - a little bit of play is way better than too tight. On taper rollers I usually do it up until it starts to drag, then back it off, then do it up as tight as I can with my fingers, then put the split pin in. MarvinsMom Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 the black mini did exaclty the same thing, one of the back wheel bearings failed and over heated the hub causing all the grease to leak out, the hubcap was that hot you couldn't even touch it at the time. it was THAT hot. and been a mini 1000 it has drums all round. best thing wold be to change them as soon as possible.but as that isn't possible i'd try cleaning the existing bearing and stub axil up and repacking with fresh grease, and keeping a close eye on it (and hoping for the best) good luck bringing that little car home, it looks a nice one!
Asimo Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Hi all, I'm planning on doing 250 miles to Spa tomorrow, is that sensible? PetePhoto of heroic Toledo at Eau Rouge is all that is required for sensibleness. If you have to, because these are just individual bearings, not impossible to get replacements from a bearing factors en route. Best of luck!
petermcpete Posted September 12, 2018 Author Posted September 12, 2018 Right,I'm doing car repairs at 10pm on the table of an AirBnB Managed to get the bearings off the car. This one sounds ropey: And this one sounds ok: Sorry for my not having a clue, what should I do now? I have wd40 to give them a clean, but no grease with me - I can go out and buy some first thing tomorrow morning though. oldcars, johngarty, Mrs6C and 6 others 9
Tamworthbay Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Whatever you do, do not run them dry. They won’t do ten miles and will lock solid. Grease is essential. In fact grease is the word. johngarty, Cavcraft, Squire_Dawson and 8 others 11
petermcpete Posted September 12, 2018 Author Posted September 12, 2018 Guessing this isn't meant to be like this? johngarty 1
Tamworthbay Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 You guess correctly, that’s bad. It may hold but would be great if there is a local bearing supplier that could match it. Squire_Dawson 1
Mally Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Correct, it shouldn't look like that, but rather than risk breaking the bits off I'd stick it back in as is if I had to.Bearings have numbers stamped on them. Write the numbers down in case you can locate a stockist.Use high melting point grease, press it well into the rollers. When its assembled spin the wheel and check for side play. You should fit new parts as a supplied pair, but if the outer race looks reasonable and you are short on equipment, you could just fit a new roller unit into the old outer.I have never* done it myself though. purplebargeken Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 That is very bad indeed. I would have recommended that you join the Toledo section on fb and arranged some local contacts just in case but a bit late now Where are you now? Ah, just seen. These are 'old timer' cars over in Johnny Foreigner land. Squire_Dawson 1

I think I'm in that group (quite a small one I think) - I'll post there now.
purplebargeken Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Try these people, they are old timer engineers and are in Freiburg, they mention Triumph on the website. Squire_Dawson Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Yes, packing with grease is absolutely vital. I don't know if these bearings are meant to be pre-loaded, but nip up the retaining nut with a spanner, so its pressed home, slacken off and hand tighten. Presumably there is a retainer with split pin? Jack it up and try to wobble the wheel about with your hands - you'll know if its gone. But make absolutely sure its swimming in grease before fitting. petermcpete Posted September 12, 2018 Author Posted September 12, 2018 As an aside, would it be a stupid idea to swap the wheel bearing with the other side? This crap bearing only sounds bad when going forward, in reverse it's alright. If I swap it with the other side, the other side will be ok going forward, but crap in reverse. As the bodge of all bodges if I can't get a part, would that be a slight improvement? Isaac Hunt 1
purplebargeken Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 If they can't help then I am pretty sure they would be able to point you in the right direction for a supplier. Might be worth checking the other side as well. Whereabouts in the UK are you normally?
purplebargeken Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Hmm, not sure I would risk it tbh. Better to get a pair and do them both but that is me being uber cautious. Wonder if they might have pads too? Tamworthbay 1

purplebargeken Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Ah, ok. Just that there are a ton of Triumph nutters in Coventry - for future reference. petermcpete 1
