PhilA Posted May 17, 2019 Author Posted May 17, 2019 It steers okay right now, there's just a little bit of "Land Rover" to the free play in the wheel. Phil LightBulbFun and purplebargeken 1 1
hairnet Posted May 17, 2019 Posted May 17, 2019 place to stay in MS booked three left to book getting closer
hairnet Posted May 27, 2019 Posted May 27, 2019 plane from noo yoik booked plane from paris booked cos they cost less than 300 all in for both - im not cheap its cos it was quicker than booking jfk to manc as it stopped anyway - which stopped in paris for longer than the plane takes to get to cdg on my flight ffs looking for the thread it went to the first page and phils first line 'its a 4.4 str 8 and 4 speed auto' was this common in the fifties cos lots of them were 3 or even thunderburd was two speed?? @PhilA
PhilA Posted May 28, 2019 Author Posted May 28, 2019 It had more gears than a regular manual gearbox (3 being common). For it to have 4 ratios and be automagic? Unheard of. 4.4 fairly common engine size for big vehicle here, slow-n-easy to move in luxury. I need to kill all the wasps in the garage. Today it was 37°C in there. Phil Joey spud 1

PhilA Posted May 28, 2019 Author Posted May 28, 2019 Death to the waspies! Net result, the car's covered in wasp spray. And the work bench. And the barbeque. And all the engine parts. Still need more. That's 3 cans emptied and still the blasted things are flying around. Summer sucks. Phil

LabRat Posted May 29, 2019 Posted May 29, 2019 Don't know if you can get it over there, the pest control guys at work use Ficam D powder- you need to spray it at the bastards and their nests, it'll kill the queen and larvae in short order.
PhilA Posted May 29, 2019 Author Posted May 29, 2019 I'll take a look see. I have been using Raid, it's pretty ugly stuff. Phil
PhilA Posted May 31, 2019 Author Posted May 31, 2019 I was talking to the manager at the auto parts store yesterday, and it made me think about what's left to do. Split engine and gearbox Purchase gearbox rebuild set and rebuild gearbox Strip, clean and paint engine bay. Paint engine. Remove heater box, test matrix and valve for leaks. Reassemble, test and refit engine/gearbox. Engine oil change. Spark plug wires, replace for new. Clean out steering box of old grease. Buy new "corn head" grease. Buy steering box seal. Fit steering box seal, refit and refill. Fuel pump gasket/rebuild set. Front shock absorber rubber mounts Ignition switch - purchase Vehicle lockset - purchase New glass for driver door and rear pax door Fix locks Fix winder mech, driver's door, rear pax door Rewire engine bay, and behind dash Driver side front - new lug stud Purchase alternator and fit Purchase battery tray, fit in trunk and purchase wire to run to rear of vehicle. Check rear shocks because they leak air. Radiator repair/re-core Driver's side front turn signal reflector needs re-silvering Finish radio and refit Adjust brakes (free play needs correctly setting) ... probably a few things I've forgotten... Tune up and drive --Phil LabRat, egg, mat_the_cat and 5 others 8

PhilA Posted June 1, 2019 Author Posted June 1, 2019 I split the wormwheel from the cross-shaft tonight. Not in overall bad shape, thankfully. Cleaned it out in gasoline. All the old grease dissolved out. Reassembled it and tweaked it up a little, which has removed most of the slack. Still need to add thread lock and peen the nut on. Cleaned a lot of the old grease out of the steering box. Going to work on the rest later. Scrubbed the lid down and painted it to stop it rusting. That's all for tonight. PhilA Posted June 3, 2019 Author Posted June 3, 2019 Oh my. Somebody has given me the horn. That is, a pair of Delco horns arrived in a box today... Phil The Moog and LightBulbFun 2

somewhatfoolish Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Meep meep! Mopar did get Delco or whoever to make a horn that made that noise specially for the Roadrunner.
PhilA Posted June 3, 2019 Author Posted June 3, 2019 The funny thing is, the Road Runner horn was more like the cheap horns fitted to small cars today- that have a harsh BEEP (think mk1 Ford Fiesta) rather than the traditional long-trumpet parp noise horns made at the time. --Phil somewhatfoolish and tooSavvy 2
PhilA Posted June 3, 2019 Author Posted June 3, 2019 With a little tweak, they now work (one was kinda rattling, the other let out a feeble gargling buzz). Hot damn are they loud. I need to make some new brackets for them to allow them to fit but they sound the part! Many thanks, the horn push will be known as the hairnet button now. hairnet Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 EARLOL Does the gator guy from swamp people know you have his shirt
PhilA Posted June 4, 2019 Author Posted June 4, 2019 Took it without him knowing. Yes, the things are particularly loud- that was them facing away from me. I made the kids run away "Here, come here, listen to this..." --Phil hairnet 1
LightBulbFun Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 Very happy to see work continuing on this magnificent blue beast and happy to see you managed to finally satisfy your horn issue

PhilA Posted June 7, 2019 Author Posted June 7, 2019 Ordered some grease for the steering box. Next up is to finish cleaning the old stuff out, then it can all go back together and be painted. There's not enough hours in the day! --Phil LightBulbFun 1
PhilA Posted June 10, 2019 Author Posted June 10, 2019 Tonight I propped the doors open, set up the big drum fan and started cleaning up the driver's side frame rail and steering box area. Coming up pretty well, removed a lot of grease and caked on crud. This seal needs to be replaced, looks to just be a press fit into the bottom of the steering box cross shaft hole. I had my first "Holy crap and I drove that" moment. Let's all play "Spot what's missing from the brake clevis", shall we, boys and girls? Phil STUNO, rainagain, LabRat and 1 other 4
