PhilA Posted June 20, 2019 Author Posted June 20, 2019 Had a little time tonight so drilled the spot welds off the brackets for the horns. Dressed all the edges back down flat. Repeat. I have taken a look at some pictures of these things all dismantled and there's not much space inside, certainly not enough to put screws through the case. I think I'll end up getting the new brackets welded on. One of my neighbors does tig and mig welding so I may ask him and see what he thinks. Phil richardthestag 1
PhilA Posted June 22, 2019 Author Posted June 22, 2019 Went to the store, matched up the steel the original horn bracket is made from. Bought a length of it to make some new brackets up. I'll get them welded on. Not bad for half past four on a Friday afternoon. $8 Phil LightBulbFun, richardthestag, tooSavvy and 3 others 6

PhilA Posted June 23, 2019 Author Posted June 23, 2019 Painted up the inside of the outside half of the heater clamshell as it was just in rust proofer. Took the other half and cleaned the remnants of the seal off. Took it back to mostly clean metal with my DA. Coated the rest in Kurust. And then paint. All the screws were rusty, and by the look of it at some point chrome plated. Spun them down in my drill against some abrasive paper. All shiny. And finally given a lick of gloss black. PhilA Posted June 27, 2019 Author Posted June 27, 2019 I made a start on creating some brackets for the horns last night. Started by laying the original out on the blank. Marked out the positions of the major features with a scribe. Measured up the center lines and punched the center for the drill to locate in. Drill the holes out with progressively larger bits. Get to 1/2" with the bigger of the two holes, the largest bit in my set. Start hacking at it with a file and make a real pig's ear of it. Give up and go to the store and buy a step drill that has 11/16" as a size. Lop the first attempt off, remake with steps above but with a much more circular hole this time. File end to profile. Test fitment. Bend, cold, in door frame. Drill two holes for bolts. Gotta make a duplicate now. Also, electrical antenna arrived in the mail yesterday, a couple days early. I also have a new grease gun on the way, a Wanner. Same model my old man bought new in the sixties, because it never quit working yet and this car has a lot of grease points, so I wanted a decent one. The little cheap gun I bought a few years ago has already fallen apart. Phil stonedagain, mercedade, DeeJay and 5 others 7 1
DSdriver Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 I don't know if they're given the same name over there but large drill bits that have a reduced shaft so they fit in a half inch chuck are called blacksmith's bits in the UK.
PhilA Posted June 28, 2019 Author Posted June 28, 2019 Yeah, a few of mine have reduced shaft, the chuck on my drill opens up to 10mm. The 11/16" bit they had at the store was $26 and 1/2" shaft so wouldn't fit anyway. So, given that, I bashed another piece of metal into an appropriate shape. Drilled some holes to weld through and offered up as a visual. Grabbed a couple wire brushes and started to scrub. Got the horns all duded up in a nice shade of gloss black. PhilA Posted June 28, 2019 Author Posted June 28, 2019 Nah, everything under the hood will be getting a bit of the "new" look. Accountant says heater man will have to wait. Phil
PhilA Posted June 30, 2019 Author Posted June 30, 2019 Today's tasks, scrape decades of scheiße off the body. This is where I left off. More to follow. Hopefully can get the firewall looking a bit more pretty before the engine goes back in. Phil tooSavvy, LightBulbFun, RayMK and 1 other 4
PhilA Posted July 1, 2019 Author Posted July 1, 2019 Tonight's Sitting On The Couch is brought to you by glovebox emblem. It's always irked me because it looks so.. crappy. Partially see through, partially silvered, partially red. Somebody's painted it red at some point in the past. Pictures of these emblems show them a nice vivid red. Nope, we have crappy silver and red-ish. Decided to attack it carefully with a brass brush to see if the surface finish would come off so I could redo it. The answer is "sort of". Although a good portion of the paint had gone, the rear surface has a strange textured finish which appears to be chromed. All this silver sits in the dimples and divots and won't come off. Yup, still looks like crap. Adding some color to the back with a Sharpie results in the same blotchy silvered finish. I think I may hammer the peened edge back, lift that out and sand the back smooth, to paint it back up again nice, deep red. Phil LightBulbFun, paulplom, RayMK and 2 others 5
PhilA Posted July 1, 2019 Author Posted July 1, 2019 I have been instructed to try oven cleaner to remove the existing paint. Once that is gone, new paint may be applied. I shall try this method. --Phil egg and LightBulbFun 2
