BMW Ignition Antenna

Mate's BMW bike refused to start today, flashing "EWS" on the dashboard. Google shows this is related to the ignition antenna that links the key to the ignition circuit, and it seems some cars have the same.

Wouldn't be a problem at home, but we are in Korce, Albania, and the nearest BMW Motorradd dealer is in Mostar, Bosnia.

Does not seem to be a way to bypass it according to the bike forums, but someone here may know.

It did clear the message and start after turning the ignition on and off several times, but bit concerned if it fails completely.

Disconnect the battery for half an hour? First port of call for lots or random electronic issues.

Some japanese bikes can bypass the immobiliser using a 1k resistor - daft but true.

Car ignition pickup rings are literally just a coil of wire around the key with two wires off the end. I've seen them fail before down to bad solder joints due to vibration, this would probably be worse on a bike. Easy repair if you have a soldering iron, but also a progressive failure rather than instant.

Would a loop of wire poked into the mutliplug & looped around the key on top of the ignition switch work as a get him home bodge then?

Nah, there's a good few dozen turns of wire, the easiest thing would be to crack the casing open and sort out the solder joints if that's what it is. Any water or muck on the connector would deffo affect this.

possibly the bottom of the ign barrel might be getting fucked/sticky/wants to go home

Well, it won't go now at all. The only place that has one is in Split, Croatia.

Mate is now trying to hire a car (which has to go across two borders) to drive to split to pick the bit up, then drive back to here in Berat to get it going. Its a 20 hour round trip. We'll meet up again in a few days somewhere in Croatia.

Best laid plans and all that.
