Shite soft tops

I've been browsing about for a cheap 4 seater soft top from the 90-00's. There's actually quite a lot of choice having a quick look.....

 

Renault megane ( both the earlier soft top and the later tin top)

Various similar peugeot tin tops (plus 306)

Saab 900/9-3 - even the newer shape are about a grand upwards

Merc clk

Vw golf

Rover R8 (the asking prices of these seem to be creeping up, or there's a fair few chancers about- one or the other)

 

There's loads more I'm sure- assuming a max budget of 1k what would you consider, what would you steer clear of?

 

As an aside the only c£500 4 seat soft top that crops up often is the mk1 megane. Any experience of these?

Ovlov C70, always fancied one - lovely 5 pot soundtrack and turbo POWAH. Might get an ok* one for a grand.

 

+1 on the later tin top megane, also wantage.

You missed the obvious choice, and best of all is it's a Cat C you lucky thing.

 

 

After a quick search its clear to see that the world is your oyster, but in this, you could be the pearl...

 

Comes complete with lumpy running, but don't let that put you off, I mean who wants their mash without texture??

I enjoyed my 306 in sundance yellow immensely. Until the hydraulic roof mechanism grenaded.

 

At this price I would only consider manual roof cars now.

 

Oh, and the last Samba I saw sold for about £1500. Still worth it tho!

Paulplom of this very manor offered me a C70 a while back.

 

Not sure if it was a coupe or convertible, but it was a T5 manual.

 

Sounded nice, but wrong gearbox and a tad out of my price range.

 

May be worth chucking a pm his way.

 

Wrong time of year to be considering convertibles. Best to buy one when the beast from the east makes a reappearance.
