Mondeo hunting

I could but this one was nearby so. I can’t be arsed with testing it then pissing around with the usual Bumtree lot.

Only just realised the test is up in a few weeks on this big bastard. I’d done a bit of a cursory inspection to see what I’d be likely failing on. Very slight crack in the 6 month old driveshaft boot, if I’d had another boot knocking around I’d have fitted it but I’ve managed to successfully make good with a smear of RTV sealant. That’ll do for now...

Droplink gaiter was torn on the near side. No problem, £13 scored a decent pair of FAI links fitted this evening. The rear ones have had it as well, waiting for those to arrive.

I know greasing the brake pipes will make the tester instantly suspicious and invariably warrant an advisory but fuck it, they’re rust free and I’d be keen to keep them that way. Only other minor I could find was slight chaffing to the offside brake hose but it’s passable so I’ll get another ordered in due course.

The handbrake was typical Mondeo Mk2 in that it was shit. Half an hour well spent backing the adjusters out saw the handbrake returned to proper service. Quite a satisfying job.

In other news a good rustproofing session on the Focus found a few areas needing treatment. A coat of Loctite Rust Converter, some Lidl red oxide then paste some Waxoyl underbody on. Then a spray of the clear stuff over the top. Job jobbed. Then to sort the handbrake I’d actually took the wheel off to sort.

Just caught up with this thread as I am about to be bothering a Mondeo of a similar vintage myself... it is silver, lower mileage but currently without complete sills :/

All of them by now will have had welding to a greater or lesser extent usually on the backs of the sills. If you are handy with a welder it’s worth doing but check first what the rest is like for example the boot floor to inner arch tub is like. It’s quite common for them to have rusted round the entire seam from the boot floor all the way down to the seatbelt anchors.

I did plenty poking and prodding and it seems to be confined to the sills thankfully; it's a 42k mile car that was garaged most of it's life but the offside sill has about two feet missing from the flat section underneath. Nearside isn't anywhere near as bad.

Sounds a good project. Give us a shout if there’s anything you need or not sure about.

Late Mondeo Zetec Alloys no less?

Indeed; set of five for the Mondeo. Seller had lost the centre caps so not too expensive either.

Well mine arrived today; a bit of a clunk from a front CV joint, tiny 14in wheels and both front windows need a hand to go up without jamming at an angle.

Arches are okay, nearside sill okay, offside sill has about a third missing.  It was a cheap car so issues were not unexpected but it is relatively sound.

i loved my mk2 and miss its handling

Looks smart - what spec is it?

They had started chucking optional bits on as standard for the 2000 MY as it was run-out time.

Presumably with only 14" wheels on, none of the mud and salt ever made it the huge distance from the tyre to the arch :)

May 2000 2.0i Zetec; aircon, CD, electric front windows, 16in alloys (in my garage awaiting fitting), central locking. Probably other stuff I've forgotten.

Given I’ve got a disproportionate amount of time to spend ducking about with things in the house now I’ve took some time to sort a few jobs. First one was the non working central locking, stripping the door down then blasting the drivers door solenoid seems to have cured it for now. No remote locking but in fairness after about 3 years they were all like that.

Need to order some trailing arm bushes, these hardly ever go on these unlike the Mk4s. They started on the way home from work other night, I think the last vestiges of the bushes ripped out as they are banging like fuck and you can move the arm side to side with your hands.

The test is up in a few weeks so I’ve decided against battling with these bastards on the driveway, I think it’ll want some heat on the steel outer sleeve to shift it out of the hub carrier, or failing that a twat with the air hammer.

Undersealed the sills today as well, as much as I wanted to keep the silver sills they’re going rusty again where it’s chipped away. in fact one side needs welding up. Should give it a few more years life.

The boot floor has took a hammering on the underside as well, another winter and I’d reckon this would have rusted through. Gave it a run over with the flap disc then a coat of Vactan.

Your in the same boat as me. Wife's mk 4 golf GTi 20vt is mechanically mint but bodily frilly. Was a 400 hundred pound car 2 years ago when we took it (been round the family). It's on a t plate so it's earned the right to rust, but it's a constant vigil catching rust, treating it then protecting it. Like your Mondeo itd be easier to weigh the fucker in, but cars from this era are so well made. Ours drives like a branner ( tbf I keep well on top of it mechanically as that's my trade) but it'll be heartbreaking when the body gets on top of it.

As an aside, after loads of threads with you saying just scrap the fucker, this is the first time I've seen this thread. Life long ford fan wastes money keeping a worthless MK2 Mondeo on the road. Bloody hypocrite ?

It’s borderline for me mate, but to chuck some underseal on it to hopefully buy me a winter or two more out of it for the £5 it’s cost is worthwhile. Bushes are £12 a piece, other than that it starts on the button and runs like a sewing machine so I’m begrudged to chuck it away. Obviously when/if a big ticket or PITA job comes up like the bottom end going or a clutch/ diff shitting itself then it’s curtains. I’m realistic though it’s probably got a year or two left but that’s old bangers for you.

Im incredibly prescriptive with the scrap it thing you are right there. Frequently I read threads and it wants all sorts of shit doing to it, or intermittent PITA faults that require £££ to put right and my thoughts are yeah scrap the fucker. A bit like when you get a 15 year old diesel that’s smoking it’s bollocks off, these things are absolute twats to diagnose and 80% of the solutions are going to cost you big time with no certainty of resolution.

Its a bit of an art but with bangernomics you’ve got to know when to fuck it off and when to spend. So a few hundred now to keep the fucker going while I put some aside for a Mk2 Focus.
