Crunch bar in my gearbox

Never taken out a worn out Valeo - usually the fingers break up and / or centre plate springs drop out and jam it all up. Or release bearing gives up and takes out the quill shaft .

But never worn

But never worn

You've never had to deal with an abused Variomatic then.

Please let's not resort to personal arguments.

It's old cars and the internet, take deep breaths.

Interesting. I'm considering a new clutch on the Scenic 1 2.0 later this year and have always used LUK clutches without problem.  I read this earlier on here where someone said only valeo for French stuff, might have been you, and looked up valeo clutches as a result. Those are the only 2 makes I would consider, with so much work to do, saving some 30 odd quid on a cheapy is never worth it. The CSC  (concentric slave cylinder) pushes the price of modern clutches up quite a bit but especially worth using good brands on those.

Has your tame chap had many problems with LUK on French cars then?

On PSA products, yes.  Not sure about Renault/Nissan/Dacia - will try to remember to ask tomorrow.

Did you change the entire clutch assembly (pressure plate, friction plate, thrust bearing and release bearing/CSC) or just the friction plate?

Just changing the friction plate with the rest being bollocksed is asking for aggro. Did the clutch on a friend's 205 GRD with a BE3 about 15 years ago.  He bought just the friction plate as (in his eyes) the rest seemed to be in good working order, it failed after 200 miles so we had to do it again with a full kit. No problems after that and he ran the car for another 5 years or so.

I'm in agreement with everyone else that the problem is either the fitting of the new clutch or something in the mechanism not working properly.

Like a back-to-front friction plate?

I was trying to think what would do it, and that certainly would..

If in doubt, fat side out.

(there are exceptions these days but that saying is from the 70's)

Still valid on a DW8 Blingo. They are SMF and traditional clutch. None of this DMF and non-cushioned-hub friction plate nonsense.

My only other thought is that the pressure plate is somehow on wonky (location dowel not in a location hole maybe) so the release doesn't actually release properly.

Worn splines on the box can do it to, as the plate will stick rather than slide smoothly.

The release shaft runs in plastic bearings. If they are worn the clutch might be difficult to release.
