so, many years ago(20) I was aimlessly driving around as I do scanning for interesting cars and stumbled across a lovely brown old rolls poking its head out of a well to do garage. I chatted with the owner and told him to let me know if for sale.... today he called.  He brought it with him form California many years ago, it was good, it now has slight fire damage to the side paint (god knows) and hasn't run for many many years....I am going to look after work..what is a scrap Rolls worth?  I have ideas of getting it running, no mot nor tax needed, and using it... but don't want to put more in financially  than I can get out of it  pics will follow.  :)

These CAN return between 10-12k broken so i have been told by a Bentley and Roller breaker I know in Oxford, BUT.... how long will it take to break up and sell. To buy 3k with fire damage as above I’d say £2k ish....

Hang on, are we saying it IS a Spirit or something earlier and possibly even more worthy of restoring  breaking for filthy lucre?

Running is the least of your worries - its the brakes that are the real problem on the old Shadows along with the hydraulic suspension ( just like Citroen - they licensed it - but more expensive). The fuel consumption will make you cry. Just talking from experience - they are fun to drive with high driving position.

this is what my memory tells me it is

12mpg easily achieved - if you really nail it you can even get single figures.

I have bought shadows for around a grand before so that would be a minimum. They are pretty robust old things and if it has been stored inside I expect it won't take much to get it running. If it was me I would start at a grand as long as it has it's grille and spirit of ecstasy. If the interior is good and no real rot go up to 3 grand max but it would have to be the and very nice to go that high. They do make good money breaking but it will be a slow process as parts don't sell easy unless you price them cheap. I am always interested in cheap rollers if you get scared.

If it is the model your memory tells you it might be, it could well be too new for your envisaged MOT and tax free shenanigans . The Shadow 2 only came out in 77 and ran till 1980.

If it's a full on Federalised California car does this mean the value in parts in this country would be less ?

I'm hoping that you've made a mistake and it's a Corniche or even a Camargue and you snaffle it for peanuts , good luck.

That pic is of a Shadow 2 I think, the earlier shadows had less chunky bumpers.

Good luck. I think a “small car fire” is a bit like being “slightly pregnant”.

If it's a Shadow ( 1 or 2) then it's lovely. Bottom dollar is a grand and then it just goes up. Make sure grill and chromework is all present and correct cos if not it's a breaker as the price of replacements will make your willy fizz! Brakes do not like to be left standing around and can throw up HUGE bills as can the hydraulic suspension (note if it is a really early car -1966 - then it will have self leveling on the front as well as the rear an idea quickly dropped.

Rust. They do like to! Arches are the least of the problems as they can go badly underneath and they are complicated to repair as it was RRs first attempt at a monocoque and is really over engineered to be safe as RR don't take chances! Or rather, didn't.

Engines normally go on forever but gearboxes can get weepy and then cost money but it's just a modified GM box (with a device to slow the changes down to make them smoother) so not hard to repair or replace. Interior is a place you should want to curl up in if it's a place that makes you feel like rats have done just that, then avoid as it will cost several fortunes to correct or it's a breaker. If it has got those big federal bumpers then no one wants them as they are butt ugly and heavy, slimline chrome ones (series 1) are really desirable and worth good coin, series 2 which are stainless with black plastic end caps are not as desirable but they are attached to a much more modern car (series 2 has rack instead of steering box and loads of improvements).

So, it realistically comes down to condition. Doors, bonnet and bootlid are all alloy so expect blisters on them but they won't rot, the rest is steel and definitely will. Have a look and let us know :)

Candidate for this year's quote of the year, surely?

So, i have bought it...the years haven't been kind, nor the fire.....

Its for parts. Its rhd, it was canada not calfornia, and he has had it in germany too. Lovely interior, perfect chrome...".... It might be going to saabnut on here, so no more info until a deal is finalised. :)

Ironically these were at the time a 'big car'. Whilst still big generally cars have got so much bigger these don't seem so huge these days.

Posted

Still, as Rolls allegedly said, these cars don't break down; they merely glide to a halt.

So it’s a series 1 with the chrome bumpers. Is it a long wheelbase wraith with the vinyl roof?

Fail to proceed!

Or, in an AS context, "slightly broken"...

Mr Racer, shush! That little fact is something we owners don't want getting out amongst the great unwashed.
