MoT tester emissions question

Recommended Posts

I see a fair few fords with the duratec 1.8 sold on where its failed the test recent on emissions most likely due to the rings going. Then them having passed the test a while later. In a situation like that what's the way of scraping it through without replacing the rings?

Run the emissions test on another car.

I had a mazda come in with the same problem - it actually passed the test if I took it in cold when the oil was thick. The cat must have warmed up before the oil !

Maybe just a decent service prior to the retest?

SOCs plan would work too but I wouldn't know anything about that...

The duratec 1.8 is spectacularly prone to the rings gumming up/failing round the 130-140k mark.

Holts PS4R 100g Piston Seal_ Amazon.co.uk_ Car & Motorbike.htmlEveryone used to use this in the age of the DYNOSAWS.

I used it on a mk1 Mini and an old 105 Anglia amongs others...got me thru the mot......but I was crapping myself the tester would BE QUICK before it worked it's way out the exhaust and the smoke started to blow. Both got thru the test, dought if they would nowadays...due to the time they leave the car warming up before they stick that probe up the rear end.

Remember trying to equalise the amount in the tube into the 4 plugholes :-D

15w40 oil helps - I know its the wrong stuff but the engines bollocksed anyway

If the rings do gum up as opposed to actually wearing out, some new thinner oil might be better.  Plus give it a good run to try to 'ungum' them.

Just my thought.

Various places suggest a mix of diesel and oil for a while or even petrol and oil - that sounds like a very very bad idea.

Depends a lot on whether the ring is broken or just gummed.

Gummed up ring. Put some very thin oil / diesel fuel in the bores, let it soak in and soften the gumming, then run the engine on flushing oil for as long as you dare. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Broken ring. Heavier weight oil and hope for the best. Ep140 might be a little excessive though.

Are there no proper mechanics here?

Proper mechanics dont buy the utter wank that we do.

Swapping the oil for brake cleaner will sort any gummed up piston rings, and lets face it, it’s hardly going to make ownership of a duratec any worse.

Oh yes they do....

I ran diesel oil in my Renault to clean all the gank out of it.

Worked well but it's not a quick solution

I've got a teensy bit of play in this rear spring hanger bush to sort so I'll certainly be looking for one of Quentin's miracle cures.post-7547-0-54750400-1520275787_thumb.jpg

Proper mechanics run shite cars because they see the pain and expense "non" shite cars inflict every day. I serviced Boss' sisters Range Rover Sport last week, noticed the ACE pipes were rotten and leaking and directed her to the local LR guru... His quote? £2.5k.

Not gonna happen to me!

I’ve tried all sorts of flushes / Italian tune ups etc on those ford / mazda engines with no joy at all .

And yes most mechanics do hate cars and many inc me run disposable shitters .

My vectra is running lovely thank you Red5 and the heated seats do work btw - just the light for the drivers one doesn’t light up .

What about injecting water while it's running with a misting jet? Works with transit Di's that have suffered ring gumming due to running on veg.

With the values being square root of fuck all for 12 year old Mondeo, can't see many people whipping the pistons out to fit some new rings then.
