I tipped in 4 litres, but then I didn't change the filter so there will still have been some in there.

Posted

Because it wasn't a "service" as such - it was an emergency oil change to drain out the oil which had been badly overfilled and caused the engine to run away.  I thought it easier to drain the lot out and replace it rather than try and drain out the correct amount.  The oil and filter weren't actually that old.

Those filters are a twat to get off, moreso on the EURO 5 as it’s under the fuel filter housing.

Check the crank pulley, the rubber delaminates on both the PSA and the Puma diesels, but they usually rock about a bit when that’s gone.

I'd be inclined to blank off the egr,

Simple to do,and then the engine isn't breathing in its own crap, makes them pull a bit better low down too.

I don’t think you can blank those off, you can restrict them with a 3/8 size hole. But of a fiddle but I’d take it off and clean it out.

Plenty of early mk4 2.0 diesels running about with them blanked off.

My own included.

This. All the pre-facelift stuff (Euro 4) are fine with it.

On the Mk3 2.0 TDCI 130s it used to bring the light up. I’d just clean the fucker out with some carb cleaner.

I removed the MAF sensor from mine last night.  It's quite oily in there...  I've bought a squirty bottle of isopropyl alcohol (which is the same stuff as MAF cleaner but about 1/4 the price) so I will give that a clean at the weekend.  I'll also take the hoses off and give those a good clean out - don't think I'll bother removing the inlet manifold as that looks like a right faff but I'll blast it out with carb cleaner as best I can.  Not sure whether it's worth removing the intercooler to give that a clean out too?

I and a mate both had facelift (if it makes a difference) 130 TDCi’s with blanked EGR’s and had no issues.

Just like my old mk 140 TDCi. But the mk4.5 I have now went into limp mode as soon as it fired up.

Those ones need it mapping out.

Inlet is easy enough. The EGR is a bit of a pig to remove, IME.

What was fitted to those was probably a restrictor plate, a full blank on those would bring up the EML and a resultant test fail.

Did a bit of a test, chucked two doses of Redex in, before it did 52mpg on a run, did same run again post Redex at 55mpg. Man science there.

I've had my bus for just over 18 months now... put 45k on it.

Needs a dpf repair as the eml has been on for 6 months now. Drives no Different at all. No limp mode etc.

Alternator belt tensioner let go a few weeks ago.... tensioner and belt cost over a ton, not complaining as the wheels - tyres, tensioner and belt along with a set of wipers have been my only expenditure.

I paid over the odds for it when I got it. 2 owners from new (prior to me) with a full service history and receipt for a brand new clutch not long before my purchase.

I work the thing pretty hard... and it tows a transporter regularly.

I am really impressed with the thing... so much so that I'm contemplating a 2.2 titanium x.

I've spent most of the afternoon underneath mine removing all the pipework from the turbo to the inlet manifold (including the intercooler) and giving everything a good clean out.  There was quite a lot of oil in the intercooler, but that's all squeaky clean now.  I started the engine with everything off and let it run for a bit to warm the oil, then gave it a couple of good revs (as far as it would rev with no MAF in place) and there wasn't any oil coming from the turbo outlet - not very scientific but encouraging nonetheless.  Alternator bolts were a bit of a twat due to rust and some of the jubilee clips were a PITA as someone had fitted them so the screws were completely inaccessible, but got there in the end.  Annoyingly the stuff I bought to clean the MAF hasn't arrived yet, and I don't want to use the carb cleaner (I used it to clean off my tools afterwards and one of the screwdriver handles started to melt), so I can't take it for a test run yet, but hopefully that'll be here by Monday.  I've undone the jubilee clip on the hose from the air filter, so if the engine does run away again I can yank it off and block it to strangle the engine - I'm not sure the clutch will appreciate being asked to stall the engine from 5,000rpm again.

It'll be quite gentle if you're in 6th gear, nothing to worry about.

Managed to find a ‘man who can’ locally to supply and fit the clutch and DMF for £550.

Just seen this. It was a full plate blank, no holes. One of the mk3’s I made from many layers of a lager can and my mate ended up leaving it in.

Nice. I love to see a car working.

The 2.2 is another world in terms of power and torque. My mate uses his loads to tow a car trailer. Both his and mine are rolling road mapped from the standard 200 to 233 BHP and I forget his torque, but mine is 540Nm, up from 410 iirc.

Regarding your DPF, when I had my PFL 2.0 TX,  mine went over the max soot load it could burn off with a regen. I removed it and blasted it out with the pressure washer at circa 185K. It was fine, afterwards. Worth a go.

Have you had it on Forscan to check the soot level?

Speaking of 2.2 TXS’s. We have yet another in the fold.

The Lunar Sky in the middle. It’s an auto and has a few options. My mate picked it up from NI last weekend, for another mate. The other two are both TXS’. One is a 2.2 manual, the other a 2.0 Ecoboost. Both belong to my mate.

When I bought mine 2.5 years ago, we thought the Lunar Sky colour was rare. Now, not including mine, I know three people with one in the same colour, and there’s six of us with a TXS estate, all together and not a bit of daft coloured vinyl or gel badge to be seen, anywhere. ?

There’s a reason we keep buying them. ?

I'm on the hunt for an estate and have found a 10 Plate TitX with the 2.0TDCI 163bhp engine.

Its done 138k but has only had one owner.

Hopefully going to see to on Saturday, any thoughts?

My dad has one just like that atm. No options, 140 odd K atm and like almost every 2.0 or 2.2 Mondeo, it’s no bother at all.

It does seem to suffer the same ‘dead spot’ as the 2.2 200 (unsure on 175) when pulling away, in that it needs more revs than you would expect, or it bogs right down. Unlike the 140 2.0 TDCi.

At a guess, I’d say this is due to Euro 5 emissions crap, as opposed to Euro 4 control. It’s not the end of the world, just a bit unusual at first.

So if it feels like that, don’t worry.

Thanks, next question, I've looked it up on the ETIS and the spec list doesn't say anything about cruise control but does list "speed control".

Given the buttons on the steering wheel, does this mean that it has cruise control?

Yeah, it has standard cruise control and the other button is for the speed limiter.

Nice engine, very smooth and powerful.

Usual EML and EGR faults that should be obvious. Mine split turbo pipes under hard driving. Check all the electrics work. Is it a manual or Powershift?

The speed limiter/cruise control combo was standard on facelift models. The limiter is very passive, a good push on the throttle gets you over your preset limit.

This looks cheap.  Either that or the bottom has fallen out of the values, as usually happens when I buy a car.
