£1400 isn’t out of the way for that I wouldn’t say. Looks tidy enough. What about the one for sale on here for £750?

Wuvvum's? Nah he's about 3 hours away (based on "north east norfolk").

£70 one way, but it's the 3 hours rather than the money.

Did Ford offer them with RunFlat tyres? I seem to recall seeing them once or twice.

A friend had his Mk4 taxi given a prohibition notice at a routine taxi inspection at Manchester Airport because it was fitted with run flat tyres but no TPMS. I didn't know such a rule existed but apparently it's so the driver knows he has a flat tyre. If you have a puncture on run flats then trust me, you KNOW you've got a flat tyre.

I had a look at insuring a 2.5T. I'm old enough, and I guess live in an area nice enough, where it's no longer such an issue (that only took almost 20 years). Chose two randoms on AutoTrader, both TitX, one 2.0 auto diesel and one 2.5T both more or less the same year and value - the 2.5T is ever so slightly cheaper- about £30 difference. One real issue is I presume they're not especially common?

Also how would I knowing the liners were gone? Poor running? Noisy?

Edit: on the notion of MPGs, my 1.6 C4 has never reported more than high 30s. Probably because I have to cane the bastard pretty much all the time because of its absurdly short gearing.

If the 2.5 is the same Volvo engine that's in the Focus St, I think issues are mostly with remapped units. Also, I think post 2008 liners changed, although I don't know how this works in Mondeo world; I have that engine in my post 2008 Volvo and like it very much.

Posted

I think it's essentially the same 2.5, 5 cylinder. I believe the mapping is a little different and the Focus ST has a smidge more power.

Posted

I find it a great engine; happy to grunt around but also very floorable when the mood takes you. 6th gear (at least on the Volvo) is around 2k at 60, so very relaxing if that's your thing.

I get 33mpg calculated, on A and B roads with mix of giffer driving and hooligan driving. Manual.

Posted

In my c4 70mph isn't far off 4k rpm. I've had it for about 2 and a half years and I still occasionally try for that non-existent 6th gear.

More possibilities for me;

2.0 dizzle, full test, 80k miles, claims FSH. £2600. Strong money maybe, but nearby and looks clean.

2.5T, Full Test, 91k, claims it's had a belt. £2450. It's a right old trek being in Derbyshire but I'm more inclined to travel for a 2.5T.

In both cases not a fan of the Ghia interior, though wood is fun in a 2.5T.

That has to be one of the worst factory fit 'wood' trims of all time. looks all sorts of wrong. Shape, style, colour, volume, contrast against the stereo....

At least it can always be swapped out.

Posted

Early 2.5s suffered cracked liners because they were essentially bored out 2.3s without much reinforcement. The issue was more prevalent on the Focus ST and (weirdly) the S-MAX.

2008/9 onwards saw the problem sorted.

Symptoms are noisy, poor running engine etc. Focus ST forums are full of stories, although they were most likely to be remapped.

I do prefer the later TitX over Ghia trim.

I’ve got a Zetec, in all honesty it’s got everything you are likely to need, climate, 4x electric windows, decent wireless. 3 months in or so and I’m very pleased with it, it runs on fumes, great on the motorway, fits the kids in and all my shite in the boot. Got a few 600 mile round trips planned over next 2 months, going to get the DMF swapped after the first one. In a way I really ought to have sacked the Mk2 off sooner as these suit me much better.

Yeah, Zetec is a pretty decent spec I reckon - only thing I really miss on the Mondeo compared to the Rover is heated seats (although obvs less of an issue at this time of year).

Those 1.6 base econetics fascinate me, I imagine they’re really economical but SLOW AS FUCK!!!

According to the AutoTrader listings they're the same 125bhp as  1.8 diesel....

Probably longer lasting than the 1.0 Ecoboost in the Mk5s mind...

From what I’ve heard apart from the coolant degas pipe the 1.0 on the whole is a reliable unit.

Get a TX or TXS, IMO. There's no need to settle for less, and you may as well have as much as you can get for your money. Heated and cooled. ?

I think at the £1500 or so level it’s which is least likely to give trouble.

Depends how you buy your cars and what you want. Granted, that's not much to spend on one. But you could have had, say my dad's TX nearly three times over, for that budget and it's a good car.
They're out there.

Yeah you can crop up a bargain from time to time like that but on the whole as I’ve said before generally speaking £500 buys you a load of rubbish these days. Chances are if you’d stuck it on gumtree locally it would have sold very quickly as you could see thick end of a thousand quid on it near where I live. Depends where you live as well, near larger cities prices will be dearer.

Mine has thrown me a fucked rear trailing arm bush.

Replaced less than 4 years and 55,000km ago.

Genuine part too.

Not too pleased about that.

Rang the local dealer, new bush in stock,€36.00.

It actually looks better in real life than in the photos and after all, the factory silver fitted to most Mk4a examples makes the dash look like a 1980 Fidelity music centre.

I think mine had new bushes for the test in 2019 so hopefully be alright for a while. Good that you had access to the puller for gratis, they’re £120-150 new, by the time you’ve bought one you might as well have paid less than that in labour!
