Looks a decent motor for less than a bag.

Wrong wheels though. It should have trimz and I can't help but think that a caring owner wouldn't bother fitting used alloys.

I found the same.

Phone only modules were about £20

Streaming ones? £80+

You will need a DAB aerial, although if you're in a strong area your FM aerial will do a passable job. Tuned one will be better though.

Edit: I was going to suggest going on ETIS and seeing if there's any difference listed between a DAB equipped and FM-only Mondeo - they do list preparations down to the Nth degree like whether the drivers sunvisor is heated or whatever.

However the site appears to just tell you what the car is, and the VIN. Anyone else getting the same?

You need login details for full vehicle info on ETIS, now.

Like, free login that anyone can make or dealer logins that cost a million quid a month and you need to send a photo of your glass and steel showroom complex?

Free login, I just did it today, I registered as an Independent Repairer or something.

Dunno, never tried. I have borrowed my mates on occasion. Can't remember his password, though.

Anyway, the point is I can't remember if Ford use the same antenna cable for FM and DAB or not. VW do - you plug one cable into the back of the head unit and it's got both signals mixed in and the head unit sorts it all out. Others use two different plugs.

Running that fucked pez Mondeo above shows the features as

  • Less Bluetooth
  •  Roof Mounted Radio Antenna
  •  ICE-Low Level CD + AM/FM Radio
  •  Ice Feature Pack 2
  • Less Diversity Antenna

I think the Diversity antenna means it would need a DAB one adding.

I had a 2009 Ghia estate (BD09HDO) that had DAB but no Bluetooth. Never seen that combination on another MK4.

The DAB aerial is different, yeah.

A different aerial with both signals mux'ed down the same cable, or a different aerial using its own cable and connector on the head unit end?

If it's the former then you can just replace the aerial end (from memory, tucked under the headliner near the back?) and the head unit. If the latter, running new cable will be an arse so use a stick-on one on the windscreen (outside of the heating element area)

Well that shows what they call the DAB aerial then....

  • BT/VC Phone Interface Only
  •  With Dual Band Antenna
  •  High Level CDX6+AM/FM+DAB

However it also had Bluetooth - for phone only. That was fairly common, I think the Sony head unit on Focuses did DAB and handsfree but not audio streaming BT

No Bluetooth module fitted and no phone controls on the indicator stalk either?

Although it did have wood trim that makes up for it.

OK then, let's settle my burning question.

Bluetooth for phone calls only. "Roof mounted antenna" with no mention of dual band or diversity, so probably FM only. Best bet sounds like a stick-on antenna.

Mine looks stripped out according to that and it's not even The Edge spec, more Adam Clayton Zetec spec.

Head over to Etis and use that login. Proper rabbit hole of looking up past cars, cars off the telly, ones that drive past your house etc.

I checked out one of the Black Boothandle Gang and the level of detail recorded was immense. Probably told you what length speedo needle it had been specced with, a good three times as much as usual. Perhaps custom built spec?

The BBG have an option for "Less Dress Up RSO", a quick search says that RSO = retail special order, so I'm reading that as a super mingebag special order for a dealer, or more likely a fleet? Maybe specced for a taxi specialist?

The spec list certainly has more Less than With.

"With SVO Application/Label"

SVO = Special Vehicle Operations, they get involved with fleet orders etc. Seems to be used in the USA for "Performance" stuff, like AMG is to Mercs but I'm sure I remember reading an article years ago saying how if someone like British Gas want a load of vans, they go to SVO and get to write the spec sheet exactly how they want it. Perhaps the reason for that ETIS dump being like War and Peace, with the tacho redline and fuel tank size specified.

Tits always work, but ETIS only works on Fords.

There are other systems for other makes, look for the info thread. Off the top of my head you can get build info for BMW, Citroen, Peugeot, Vauxhall, Fiat.

I'd love to find out when my 06 plate Rover 25 was made but the VIN I have written down doesn't seem to work anywhere.

The car is bean tins now so was hoping something would work by reg.

To read TSB’s etc you still need a subscribtion to ETIS, unfortunately.

The free account is good for checking what spec a car was built with, though.

Was fancying a Focus Mk2 next but these are appealing a bit more. Am I right in that the diesel is a lot more reliable than the Mk3 unit? I'm still pale and sweaty thinking about the flashing glow plug light on the mk3.

Depends on which diesel.

I thought the 1.6 and 2.0 were closely related (the PSA grenade-o-matic) and the 1.8 was a totally different Ford design?
