There's a fully refurbished 3-bedroom house on a corner plot about 1/4 mile from me. Two big gardens, double glazing/rewired/replastered/new heating throughout. £53,000.The one I'm in now was £63,000 and it's just the same, equally refurbished a couple of years ago, but right at the end of the street so looks out over woodland and fields.The estate is well-populated with morons on stolen scooters and kids who like to smash windows, granted, but trouble seems to only find people who look for trouble if you get my drift.

I bought two investment properties in North Notts for much, much less than £60'000 some time ago - one was £15'000, and i sold it to a developer for 70k so that they could flatten it and the others. You can still buy a 2 bed terrace in fair condition for £60k around Mansfield, Worksop etc.Anybody who pays more than £5000 for a dog slow rattling mobile gas chamber needs examining in the head. A fool and his money eh?

Things have gone up, well where we were in Derbyshire had....after we'd left as usual! We bought large B&B sized house in Buxton in 94 for about £76k, sold it in late 96 for about £79k. On returning for a visit back in 2001 our old place was up at £140k, don't know what it might have gone to at it's peak!My cousin & her family had to move from Bedford upto Doncaster way in order to get a decent sized place of their own.

House prices are weird. In Mansfield you can buy a very tidy 3 bed end of terrance for around £85-90k. That will get you a lock up in Oxford.Conversely, houses in the better bits of Mansfield such as Berry Hill can be £450'000. The same price as a very nice detatched in a North Oxfordshire village for example.Oh, and Bay window campers are shite and everyone knows it. For a commercial vehicle to have both chassis and body welded together was a very advanced idea, especially during a time when the next best thing available was the Morris J-Type van and Citroen's Type H van, both oddly shaped and utilitarian at best.

H van was FWD and was the first and only van you could stand up in - that's why they did so much time as food mobiles at events. Have you actually driven a well sorted one? forget for one moment that they are a camper and view them as a 30-42 year old van for arguments sake, when compared to similar aged vans you find they aren't that bad, I'd much rather drive one of those than alot of vans much much newer too. Split-Screens are not that nice to drive in comparison to Bay-Window VWs so I would imagine that the main reason someone drives a Splittie is that they like the look/image rather than the ability of the actual vehicle itself.As much as I hate scene tax and as much as I think they're over-priced for what they are what you are seeing is a classic case of supply and demand. The restoration company I just got made redundant from did one Split-Screen and it cost £100k!!!!!!!! and its still not a minty-minter as its used most days.

Yes and been a passenger too-just cant see why they are so popular and costly. I like beetles so its not old VW hate or anything its just the madness of prices Me? Well if I was looking for a camper I would be saving money by getting a Bedford cf or something. At least the prices are ok and they drive better in more comfort

I'd absolutely love to get a split-screen camper, then bin all the interior and fittings and treat it like a self-employed builder would his tatty MK3 Transit - fill it with bags of gravel/wood/broken cement mixers and watch its condition rapidly deteriorate as I thrash it around building sites and smash it up kerbs. Then at MOT time I'd brush paint/stonechip over any rust and put a maximum budget of £100 towards any repairs - if it exceeds that I'll just weigh it in and get another.

Two words. Ford Transit. To my knowledge the highest price paid for a Mk1 was £25,000. It was mint though.

The rest are all affordable, parts are not hard to get (if you ask for certain car service parts, not transit) and the middle aged ones can still be got for less than a grand. if air cooled was so damn good how come we aren't all driving them?

I quite like VW vans, or I did when they were cheaper than Beetles. Fair enough because they're slower (and that takes some doing), handle much worse (see above), are less economical, likely to be more rusty and cost more to repair.

 

A good VW van is a bit like a decent Beetle, 2CV, Land Rover etc - they've got a real integrity to them and they do the job they're supposed to.

 

Load it up with fake patina, an old roof rack it was never meant to have and make it ride so low it struggles with day to day use, and that integrity has all gone. Then all you're left with is something that's slow, iffy to drive and expensive to fix. And it's expensive to buy

To be fair I wouldn't pay 25 grand for one either! Five figure price tags for transits are very rare, but I do know somebody who had a bloke knock at his door with 12 grand in a carrier bag to pay for my mate's 1969 SWB.

To be totally fair this doesn't just happen with VWs does it? it happens with all sorts Minis in particular its the main reason I stay away from UK Mini shows.So they're going up stupidly in value, thats great if you already own one. I think we're all agreed on the subject that they're over-priced for what they are and stripping paint off to get that sun-baked rat-look is a bit silly but at what point did we start slagging off certain vehicles just because they happen to be popular with a certain demographic? I'd rather have a VW camper than a CF therefore making my point that just because you don't like them doesn't mean they're shit or particularly bad.
