Pillock Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 VW Splitscreen, admittedly a 23-window samba, but still a fricken van with windows. Seventy thousand euros. £59,680 More than most of the houses on my street. http://www.motorbase.com/auctionlot/by-id/1349868378/
pogweasel Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 1. That's ridiculous. No one sane would pay sixty large for an old volkswagen2. That's ridiculous. No where can you buy a house for less than sixty large, even during the OMG RESSESSHUNZ. Where do you live, Beiruit?? Afghanistan???
Pillock Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 There's a fully refurbished 3-bedroom house on a corner plot about 1/4 mile from me. Two big gardens, double glazing/rewired/replastered/new heating throughout. £53,000.The one I'm in now was £63,000 and it's just the same, equally refurbished a couple of years ago, but right at the end of the street so looks out over woodland and fields. The estate is well-populated with morons on stolen scooters and kids who like to smash windows, granted, but trouble seems to only find people who look for trouble if you get my drift.
pompei Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I saw one today - 3 bed terrace for £45,000. One round the corner went for £29k the other week...

No where can you buy a house for less than sixty large, even during the OMG RESSESSHUNZ. Where do you live, Beiruit?? Afghanistan??? I bought two investment properties in North Notts for much, much less than £60'000 some time ago - one was £15'000, and i sold it to a developer for 70k so that they could flatten it and the others. You can still buy a 2 bed terrace in fair condition for £60k around Mansfield, Worksop etc.Anybody who pays more than £5000 for a dog slow rattling mobile gas chamber needs examining in the head. A fool and his money eh?

Mash Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 An arty farty kid from a web design company turned up at my work yesterday in a bay window camper, scened up to the hilt with a bit of rat look, lowered and some surf-type memorabilia inside. I didn't take a pic cos, well frankly I couldn't be arsed Did sound good though, I'll give the pretentious little twat that much
trigger Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Think i might sell up and move up North!, I could live like a king up there by the sounds of it!
MrRegieRitmo Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Things have gone up, well where we were in Derbyshire had....after we'd left as usual! We bought large B&B sized house in Buxton in 94 for about £76k, sold it in late 96 for about £79k. On returning for a visit back in 2001 our old place was up at £140k, don't know what it might have gone to at it's peak!My cousin & her family had to move from Bedford upto Doncaster way in order to get a decent sized place of their own.
brammy777 Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 house prices in the south are insane in places, for example houses in the road i live in are usually up for no less than £400k. Its ridiculous. House prices in Basingstoke are better, houses usually go for around £100k there, its just i live in a stupidly rich village. And no, I am not rich haha
Albert Ross Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Guess where I live? In 2002 I bought our Council House, 3 bed Semi, end of cul de sac, large field next door, large garden and driveway. £15000 of your earth quids. Current Value? 93K................I likes Sunny Donny me.This week I are mostly eating no-name pasties.

In Mansfield you can buy a very tidy 3 bed end of terrance for around £85-90k. That will get you a lock up in Oxford.Conversely, houses in the better bits of Mansfield such as Berry Hill can be £450'000. The same price as a very nice detatched in a North Oxfordshire village for example.Oh, and Bay window campers are shite and everyone knows it. Scene or not, the rat look web design kid is a second rate wanker and he knows it.
Guest Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Oh, and Bay window campers are shite and everyone knows it.I have allways thought they were shit-bay/split whatever. Dog slow / rusty /thirsty just horrible. Never ever could I grasp why they go for so much cash.
j-j Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 For a commercial vehicle to have both chassis and body welded together was a very advanced idea, especially during a time when the next best thing available was the Morris J-Type van and Citroen's Type H van, both oddly shaped and utilitarian at best.- How dare they the type H MADE the modern van as we know it - the VW did nothing. H van was FWD and was the first and only van you could stand up in - that's why they did so much time as food mobiles at events. They say "oddly shaped" like that's a bad thing! - if it's not interesting to look at, me no sign. The world can take their boring vehicles and shag 'em
shite_meister Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Oh, and Bay window campers are shite and everyone knows it.I have allways thought they were shit-bay/split whatever. Dog slow / rusty /thirsty just horrible. Never ever could I grasp why they go for so much cash. Have you actually driven a well sorted one? forget for one moment that they are a camper and view them as a 30-42 year old van for arguments sake, when compared to similar aged vans you find they aren't that bad, I'd much rather drive one of those than alot of vans much much newer too. Split-Screens are not that nice to drive in comparison to Bay-Window VWs so I would imagine that the main reason someone drives a Splittie is that they like the look/image rather than the ability of the actual vehicle itself. As much as I hate scene tax and as much as I think they're over-priced for what they are what you are seeing is a classic case of supply and demand. The restoration company I just got made redundant from did one Split-Screen and it cost £100k!!!!!!!! and its still not a minty-minter as its used most days.
Rocket88 Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 FFS! Overpriced, over hyped, gold plated fur lined ocean going rip off. Underpowered, slow, horrible gearchange, evil handling bags of ferrous oxide ridden shite, all of them. [You may infer that I'm not keen...............]. Had two Beetles, both horrible, driven a few Campers [and derivatives] they were equally hateful.

Have you actually driven a well sorted one?Yes and been a passenger too-just cant see why they are so popular and costly. I like beetles so its not old VW hate or anything its just the madness of prices Me? Well if I was looking for a camper I would be saving money by getting a Bedford cf or something. At least the prices are ok and they drive better in more comfort

Guest Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I'd absolutely love to get a split-screen camper, then bin all the interior and fittings and treat it like a self-employed builder would his tatty MK3 Transit - fill it with bags of gravel/wood/broken cement mixers and watch its condition rapidly deteriorate as I thrash it around building sites and smash it up kerbs. Then at MOT time I'd brush paint/stonechip over any rust and put a maximum budget of £100 towards any repairs - if it exceeds that I'll just weigh it in and get another.
Rocket88 Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 A second vote for the Bedford CF, had a cemper version of one of those, far nicer to drive, and a tenth [literally!] of the price of a VW
ayd Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 couple of my friends:- example 1 was bought 3 years ago as a 'minter' that wouldn't need anything doing to it for years, so far it's had the doors replaced, a new floor, both front wings, a full respray and various engine bits replaced just to keep it going (sorry best pic I could find) Example 2 - currently spent more than the Iraq War has cost to get to this stage but then again he did manage to do this.... They keep hassling me to get a 'dub' and I did go to one VW show at Santa Pod but quite frankly I couldn't be arsed with the maintenance as I already have a Wife and the dressing up and acting 'wacky' just wasn't for me
Station Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Don't get them, but I think I'd actually enjoy the fact you can buy every part brand new. TBH, I'd rather have an Estima (and have had one) or a Delica.
Guest Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Yeah, what is it with the VW scene? It seems to largely consist of dullard IT consultants who dress up as pirates and go around being "zany". If I owned a VW I'd be ashamed of all these nobbers.
Father Ted Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 One of the doctors has bought one, keeps breaking down and yet he keeps telling me of all the fun holidays camping he is going to have... I keep telling him of my Vango and camping trailer that compined cost less than the cost of his drive away awning and have yet to break down 20 yards from the surgery in the middle of a busy street....
FredTransit Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Two words. Ford Transit. To my knowledge the highest price paid for a Mk1 was £25,000. It was mint though. The rest are all affordable, parts are not hard to get (if you ask for certain car service parts, not transit) and the middle aged ones can still be got for less than a grand. if air cooled was so damn good how come we aren't all driving them? OK I own up, I have a splitty.....
AnthonyG Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I would never, ever pay £25,000 for a Ford Transit, although I agree with Fred's argument that they are better than a VW twatbus. On the other hand five figures buys an awful lot of nights in a hotel, and you don't have to deal with camp site owners and chemical toilets.
garethj Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I quite like VW vans, or I did when they were cheaper than Beetles. Fair enough because they're slower (and that takes some doing), handle much worse (see above), are less economical, likely to be more rusty and cost more to repair. A good VW van is a bit like a decent Beetle, 2CV, Land Rover etc - they've got a real integrity to them and they do the job they're supposed to. Load it up with fake patina, an old roof rack it was never meant to have and make it ride so low it struggles with day to day use, and that integrity has all gone. Then all you're left with is something that's slow, iffy to drive and expensive to fix. And it's expensive to buy

Five figure price tags for transits are very rare, but I do know somebody who had a bloke knock at his door with 12 grand in a carrier bag to pay for my mate's 1969 SWB.
shite_meister Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Yeah, what is it with the VW scene? It seems to largely consist of dullard IT consultants who dress up as pirates and go around being "zany". If I owned a VW I'd be ashamed of all these nobbers. To be totally fair this doesn't just happen with VWs does it? it happens with all sorts Minis in particular its the main reason I stay away from UK Mini shows. So they're going up stupidly in value, thats great if you already own one. I think we're all agreed on the subject that they're over-priced for what they are and stripping paint off to get that sun-baked rat-look is a bit silly but at what point did we start slagging off certain vehicles just because they happen to be popular with a certain demographic? I'd rather have a VW camper than a CF therefore making my point that just because you don't like them doesn't mean they're shit or particularly bad.
