Steering racks

Anybody overhauled one or had one done?

The rack on my SD1 leaks, the rubber gaiters have oil in them. I can get a replacement from Rimmers but going by the cost I bet they don't sell many.

I would'nt mind getting an overhaul kit and having a go myself. The rack is a bit of a PITA to remove - engine hasto be jacked up on one side to that rack can be slid out.

i've changed the column seal on a Scimitar one and the end joints on an Alfa one, neither was difficult. The Scimitar one was a shitload of money for an exchange rack and about £2.47 for a seal from a local bearing seller.

Have you blown a seal lately?

I sorted my Capri one with a rebuild kit, took a couple of hours and was straightforward enough.

Not recently but the water's a bit cold this time of year.

How do you steer a rack like that?  Very carefully I suspect.

Getting back to the thread... Steering racks are generally quite easy to recondition.  I've only ever done an unassisted one before now, but I can't imagine a power one is much more difficult.  Usual rules apply.  You need space, cleanliness and some time and patience.  Don't be tempted to bodge it.

Can you not get a good used rack from someone breaking an SD1?  There must be a few being broken about, and a steering rack isn't something that regularly fails, so most will be OK if not quite good condition.

I'd say getting the fucker out will be your biggest challenge. Can't see it being any more difficult to refurbish than a trolley jack. Problems start when the actual fault is something that's not covered by parts you can buy.

Secondhand stuff is drying up now. I know a guy who used to break them but no longer as there are none left to break.

I did the end seals of a rack in situ once, wasn't too bad from memory. But then it was a different car.
