SiC Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Grand offer, same as Bub - but no guarantee that is the issue. By all means pop over and have a look at some small Triumphs. Always welcome. But given the problems have appeared to have happened from sitting around for a while, it is quite a possibility! Roffle at £3 a ticket? No! We're going to have a go fixing this first. Then you can sell it as working for more. Crispian_J_Hotson, purplebargeken, johngarty and 2 others 5
Crispian_J_Hotson Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 You are certainly missing out on some easy and ''free' checks you can do before condemning it. First port of call other than already mentioned would be to read the voltage to and signal from the MAF, you don't even have to remove the thing if you can back probe it.
bigfella2 Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Is it possible to do what they do with VAG's regarding the MAF. Where if you disconnect the maf and if it runs better then the maf's at fault, as the ECU guestimates the values with it disconnected.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Car Take Back offering £160.Scrap the cunt. It’s not worth the hassle. I had an N42 (E46 318i) to fix last week and they’re hateful rubbish just like a fucked K Series (I.e 92.4% of them). The car wants to die and it’s fighting you so show it who’s boss. sierraman and D Spares & Tyres 2
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 The only thing is I have nothing to plug into it to read anything, I have Triumphs and you need nothing more than a 9/16" spanner and a small hammer with which to fix 99% of things. DeeJay, stephen01 and alf892 3
taxi paul Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 I feel your pain Ken. In the last 15 months I have bought and got rid of my rover 75, Honda cry, rover 216, modern Mazda 5,Toyota corolla and my Celica should soon be off to pastures new. All the above at loses totalling around £4,000. No wonder I have no money. I would like to swap my nap bus for something a bit more refined but put a deposit on a xc90 and got cold feet. Looked at a Merc ml350 spoke to my friendly garage and was out off by wallet raping repair costs. So sometimes you have to stick with what you have and what works for you. I would let someone have a look at it for you first and then decide. It may be simple fix. Good luck anyway. Health is more important than a lump of metal. Barry Cade and djimbob 2
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 Cheers Paul, I've done my time with regards to buying stuff, repairing stuff and passing stuff on, some with good reason, some on a whim and some have been kind of a mixture. I hope no-one gets me wrong, I love the car and when it was running and driving, it was great. I have a door actuator to put on it and also new discs and pads for the front. Not something I would do for a car that I dislike. If it was a straightforward fix then no worries, however, I can handle stuff on old cars without too much stress, and to a degree with more modern stuff. However, there is a fine line between throwing money at something that sadly has a relatively low value anyway in the hope that what I do might resolve the issue and putting money into something that will actually sort the issue out. Okay, so the plugs needed replacing anyway, so done. The cam cover gasket was clearly tired and needed replacing, so done. The jobs so far have been lovely and simple. Inlet manifold, maybe it is that, maybe not. It will get done and I will see what happens. Beyond that my skill level quickly goes to shit. Anything beyond this and I simply do not have a clue, the ability or money to bring about a fix. I have to make a balanced decision. If it is roffleworthy or of cash value to a fellow shitter with the time and ability to fix it easily and cheaply then so much the better and good on them. If not, the bridge beckons and it is sad that another one will have bitten the dust but if that is the only route left then that is what will happen. Folk on here have bridged cars, it's sad in most cases but it happens. Anyway, lets see what happens after the inlet manifold gasket fix. johngarty and stephen01 2
bub2006 Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Regards plugging something in,has it got any lights on dash? I've a fault code reader mate. I'll bring it down.
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 That's the puzzler mate, nothing has flashed up, no EML, nothing.
bub2006 Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 From experience a fault code won't show unless EML is in. It does work doesn't it?!
Parky Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 The job itself doesn't look too bad http://forums.mg-rover.org/how-do-i-answers-common-problems-8/how-do-i-change-inlet-manifold-gasket-k-series-213626/ Bit fiddly but certainly feasible.
SiC Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 I'll try and get some time off next week Ken to give you a hand. I'll bring my DS150e with me too. MAF failure doesn't always give a EML as it can be in valid range but not valid for the current running state of the engine. However before getting that far to diagnose the rough running, that intake manifold gasket needs replacing first!
alf892 Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Before going too mad and noting the point that the plug is oily and car runs rough etc Has it actually got a spark at that plug? No diagnostic required......just get a fellow shiter/wife/anyone passing to see if there is a sign of life? I'm not that far away and happy to come and turn the key while you stick your finger up the lead Christine 1
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 Big fat juicy spark produced all round. No fingers electrocuted in that process. alf892 1
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 Should I get some injector cleaner and chuck it in the tank maybe?
bub2006 Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Fuel can go stale. How old is the fuel in tank?
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 Put some in just before I had the op mate.
alf892 Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Don't want to go teaching egg sucking or nothing but I just read back on this thread for more info and BTB mentioned he had similar issue after it was stood for a while but it cleared pretty quick on the road? Could someone run it up to temp and then give it a road run?
Mr_Bo11ox Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Is anyone else finding this all a bit 'pulling teeth'-esque? If your health is not letting you get into solving this problem physically or mentally, just ring cartakeback rather than prolong the misery. richardthestag 1
Talbot Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Or get the Roffle going. At £3 per ticket, I suspect it would sell out in no time at all.
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 Fair enough, you are quite right Mr B. Apologies for the pulling of teeth, wasn't intended. Any 75'ists want anything from it? Cloth seats are good.Headlights are good as are the rear lights.Front grille is spiffing.Radio works and has code. Just let me know. Prices will be as cheap as chips. Set of Premium Platinum Spark Plugs as new. Feel free to pop over at the weekend and grab some bits. oldcars 1
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 If anyone wants it as it is then £165 takes it but will need collecting ASAP - will it drive anywhere distant? No idea, but you can also have the inlet manifold gasket and see what happens. Thanks for the possible solutions and support folks, always appreciated and respected.
mercedade Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Fix it question Firstly, how's your brake fluid level? You described rough running, smoke from something burning off in the engine bay. Any weird brake pedal feel? Scrap it question Secondly, are they standard halogen headlights or fancy-but-factory Xenon?
richardthestag Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Fix it question Firstly, how's your brake fluid level? You described rough running, smoke from something burning off in the engine bay. Any weird brake pedal feel? I was thinking that but wasnt sure if these had vacuum controlled brake servos
oldcars Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 This should have loads of pre project drive bits on, from memory is on a W plate?
Split_Pin Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 I understand Mr Cains of this land aka rml_numbers is looking to un-project drive his 75.
purplebargeken Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 Brakes have been very stoppy indeed. Sadly just regular bulb headlights. Yes, plenty of pre-Project Drive bits on it. In fact I have new pads and disks in the hall ready to go on if anyone has need. Also a rear O/S door actuator.
