Which Chod has its Golden Anniversary this Year?

Since the "what becomes 30 or 40 years old" threads are simply too depressing for me, I just wanted to do one for

when cars were still made by machos for machos and burn a hole into the ozone layer every time you fire them up.

These lent themselves to being painted like locomotives later in their lives:

Meanwhile in England Paris:

A new Grosser DKW was launched:

1968-1976-audi-100-c1-3458_4189_969X727.

And a sporty spinoff:

audi-100-coupe-s-2190.jpg

ATCNBE fnar, fnar.

The Germans had a bit of a knack for pseudo sporty stuff:

So did those English:

history_photo_49_web.jpg

This Tommy even scored two nice rides:

Not wanting to be outdone, AMC launched these two sexbombs:

So the Japanesish gave it a try as well:

The rest from the Land Of The Rising Sun was less inspiring, though:

Anything even less inspiring just had to come from Sweden:

volvo-164-02.jpg

In contrast, the Italians knew exactly how to excite dads and mobsters alike:

alfa_romeo_1750_berlina_8.jpg

BMW did the same thing with dads and bankers:

maxresdefault.jpg

And pensioners:

bmw-2800-cs-wallpaper-hd-41838.jpg

While the English built cars as English as drinking tea and appalling income disparity:

Mercedes catered exclusively for the carriage trade:

While the Italians knew exactly that 1968 was the best year for Playboys of all ever:

Peugeot launched Africa's people car:

Peugeot-504-7.jpg

Trumpreich was on a total petrol burning spree and arguably at the height of the Muscle Car craze.

Ford launched the Torino line:

Plymouth countered with the Road Runner:

And the General upped the ante with an all new Corvette:

There was also new thunder from down under, in form of the Falcon XT:

1968-Ford-XT-Falcon-GT.jpg

And the HK Monaro:

hk-monaro-brouchure03.jpg

Which leaves me with the epitome of all 1968 launches, which came from Germany, of course.

That seems pretty comprehensive, Mein Herr :)  Thank you.

Now with a 701cc engine, the Reliant Regal 3/30 replaced the 3/25 and the Supervan II became the Supervan III:

Reliant Scimitar GTE launched (SE5):

Bond 875 Mk2:

Alta A200 in Greece:

Mk2 versions of the MG 1300, Riley 1300 (Kestrel), VDP 1300, Wolseley 1300 arrive. As a Bully Bonus they got an all-synchro box.

The Landcrab went Mk2.

The Hillman Imp got a new dash amongst other accountant cost-cutting in going Mk3

And a piece of commercial chod, the DAF Pony:

My Somerset celebrates its 65th birthday this year (Sapphire anniversary?)

Posted

My Cambridge is 60 years old (Diamond). Should really pull my finger out and get it back on the road.

Snap

Edit - the F registration suffix should have told the lie here! Press photos always want the new year's reg. number.

1968 saw the launch of arguably the best saloon car ever, a car that set standards of comfort, performance and handling that took he rest of Europe 12 years to catch up, Japan 22 and everyone else ( USA, Korea, China ) still haven't.

The basic design was top of its class for the rest of the Century.

Junkman's single French picture in a collection of inferior 1968 launches is not good enough.post-17414-0-40028300-1515272424_thumb.jpegpost-17414-0-06502400-1515272445_thumb.jpegpost-17414-0-82671600-1515272457_thumb.jpegpost-17414-0-58439600-1515272481_thumb.jpegpost-17414-0-55885900-1515272501_thumb.jpeg

Yes it's a hero meeting a Frenchman.

Landcrabs went Mk2 as did the 1100/1300 range (not that you would notice with some of those).

Triumph's big saloon got an extra half litre, fuel injected

And Morgan got one of these new-fangled V8s.

I thought there must be some reason for JM not listing the ThreeThouand Five, in a Stephen Fry making Alan Davies look daft way. So much so I didn't bother to look it up thinking I was wrong .

As much as I love the XJ6 , one of these would find a place in my Euromillions garage next to all those other 1968 saloons from Peugeot, BMW, Mercedes and Volvo . Plus of course a Viscount, Zodiac and Austin 3 Litre that were current but suddenly became very outdated. And to think all this was happening when I was 4.

There was more to the Holden HK range than the Monaro.

There was the Belmont:

And the Kingswood:

post-20795-0-14370500-1515290574_thumb.jpeg

And the Premier:

post-20795-0-89967700-1515290624_thumb.jpeg

And the Brougham:

post-20795-0-22837800-1515290663_thumb.jpeg

Admittedly they were the same car, just different body styles and trim levels, but still worth a mention.

The same is true for the Ford Falcon, but I don’t give a shit about the Ford Falcon.

Also, there was the Holden LC Torana
