Hi folks,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. But I decided it was tantamount to stealing for me to look at everyone else's pictures and not contribute any of my own. Since we punish stealing in the States by cutting off a thief's hand, I decided to keep all ten fingers intact by posting some of my New York and California photos here.

Sorry in advance that some are poor quality. The camera on my phone is, uh, horrible. Got a real camera fairly recently.

World famous Dodge Omni (aka Plymouth Horizon, inbred sibling to the much-loved Talbot)

Neighbor's crusty Plymouth Sundance (Chrysler K-Car platform). It moves occasionally and even out in town one day, so I am left to assume it still moves under its own power.

Daewoo Nubira no doubt totaled by the insurance company's standards. (Damage exceeds value)

The nicest Sterling 827 I've ever seen in the U.S. Owner caught me taking pics in a public parking lot, I think he was flattered more than anything else.

Terrible Mazda MPV. Six cylinder, of course.

Neighborhood Oldsmobuick. Mid 1980s GM, FWD, auto, V6 (described them all really). I haven't had the time to actually figure out what it is.

Ford Capri held together with duct tape. Wish the pics we better.

Mid 1990s Infiniti J30. Nissan thought this would be a challenger to the 3-Series. They had RWD and a 3.0 V6 engine.

Nissan Sentra Sport Coupe

Admittedly classic non-shite Fiat 500. Very rare to see on the road in the winter.

Crinkly older Roller at Sears. If you don't know about Sears, think Asda but way, way way way way less nice. And no food. They sell clothing, washing machines, TVs, and power tools.

Quite nice Alfa 164 in Manhattan. Most have 150,000 miles on them, in strong defiance of physics.

fuck it i'll take all of them, oh by the way welcome :Dthe badge on that rover sterling looks abit weird ?????

Posted

The Rover 800 was sold in the States usually as just a "Sterling." So it had a different badge. No Rover naming on the car AFAIK.827 pictured is more desirable than the earlier 825. But of course the hatch is the one I'd have. Sadly it's been a long time since I have seen any on the road.

Welcome to the group u.a :D

I like the capri-hope you spot it again with your new camera

Posted Image

I would expect that to be a rare beast.

In the uk that would be a total loss it it lost so much as a wheeltrim

However in my book you will have your work cut out to beat this

Welcome, and love the Capri but aren't the US spec bumpers horrendous!

Posted

This is one of those definition of shite photos, (blue badge/parking/car type) even if it had been taken in the UK let alone in the US!

Good work and welcome :D

Greetings Ugly American, from what I'm led to believe the Sterling is an ultra ultra rare thing nowadays, hope the owner doesnt bust a headlamp as he/she will probably NEVER find a replacement either new or used. :)

Brilliant work UA! Welcome as well, With pictures like that you will fit in well!.I agree about the US spec bumpers, They really make cars look awful!I never know you had a US version of the Talbot Horizon, You lucky people!

Neighborhood Oldsmobuick.

As in "As I pulled up to my imitation palatial apartment building, I noticed the familiar red OldsmoBuick of one Arnold J. Pants, esquire, attorney to the former Mrs. Irwin M. Fletcher". 8)

Welcome! Very nice spots, I haven't seen a Sterling on the road in years and have never seen a (Ford) Capri yet. Suprising the numbers of Omnis/Horizons that seem to keep on running (or rattling)

Oddly enough Fletch is exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote that.

such good spots, its proper interesting seeing all these spots from over the atlantic, as pretty much every car you have over there is one i have never seen before! In the States is there the occasional european( which by that i mean small hatchback) car? Much like the odd american car i see here every now often, there is already a Ford F series pick up, a massive chevrolet pick which must be around 6m long, and a current Dodge Ram in my village

Lots of European cars here, but they're all "luxury cars." We get more ore less the full line from BMW, Merc, Audi, Saab, Volvo. Generally they are all high spec and only the most potent petrol engines. We don't have Renault, Peugeot, Opel/Vauxhall, Citroen, Alfa, or Fiat here.In terms of small hatchbacks, we do get the VW Golf (I know, not that small), and just recently started getting the Astra but that's about it. We had the Mk1 Focus hatch, but not the Mk2. Ford is bringing the Fester in around a year and everyone's excited.Plenty of small Japanese and Korean cars here of course. They just tend not to be interesting. The default new car purchase for a middle class family in the U.S. will be D-segment or an SUV.

fair enough:) wasn't the mk 1 focus sold in america wider than the european one? and it had different front indicators. I have seen an american focus before. Americas getting the transit connect as well soon, apparently thats got a whole load of fans over there?

Posted

The American Focus was longer by a few inches but not wider, it was the same body. The extra length was by virtue of stricter pedestrian impact laws so the front bumper is softer and longer. It was for this reason that the Focus WRC car was based on the silhouette of the American car, not the European one, as they could get a larger intercooler into the space.I think most American versions of European cars have different light arrangements, look at the Sterling - looks to have some arrangement of running lights between the indicators and headlamps.

US law mandated round headlights until 1975, and sealed beam units for years afterwards...not sure when that was changed, but that explains the quad-light 70s Mercs, Volvos etc that you see.Great spots by the way. Brammy, I think I've seen that Chevy pickup as well, it is enormous and I'd say a dually (twin rear wheel). Every Friday at the Hook Tesco I see a mint mid-80's Camaro Z28 in red, being driven by a petite middle-aged lady - always makes me chuckle!

Welcome UglyAmerican!

That Sterling is lurvly! I've not seen a Sterling in probably 8 years, and it was no where near that nice. Great find.

I'm Canadian but of course most of the cars you see will be familiar to me and vice versa. I always find myself disappointed by the lack of quality tat around here, but nonetheless I maintain a spottings thread as well that I update bi-monthly or so, which reminds me, time to update it. June Updates from Southern California!

There was SO much I didn't have the chance to take pictures of, including a great Pinto wagon, a million VW Vanagons, and an Alfa GTV6. But here's what I did have the camera handy for:

A collection of shite from the local garage/gas station. Far left is a Buick Riviera with landau roof. Then in red a Mazda MX-6, followed by an E36 BMW that has been on a flat tire for a year. In front of the green E46 coupe with the for-sale sign in the window is a lovely (wretched) silver Daewoos Lanos.
