Is it still possible to buy a "nailed on" classic car for less than two grand?

I've no idea what 'nailed on' means, but I assume you mean 40+ years old, bona fide, chromed, sought-after by people outside this forum.

In which case does my Standard qualify? It was less than £2000, as was the Oxford Traveller recently for sale on here.

...Remember those 1974/5 Cortina Mark III's with 'Decor' boot badges? Turns out they were built in Holland and imported to the UK when Dagenham were on strike. Decor is a trim level on Dutch Fords!

I didn't know that! My old man bought an ex-police 1973 Cortina L Decor and, for the seven years he had it, nobody knew what "L Decor" actually meant.

Guys, the cars are out there. Shitloads of them.

Just look at the eBay thread and if you still don't get the gist of what's going on, check in with your local undertaker because there is no fucking hope for you.

All you have to do is bloody buy a car and not be a wimpy laggard with gout and shrivelled tattoos.

Today I found a freshly listed fully functional and remarkably straight Ford Zodiac MKIII on the bay, MoT til July, so it will never ever need another of this terminally stupid Punch and Judy theatre for retards, 2,500 BIN.

Granted, it was half a bag more than what we are limited to here, but it's a phinned Phord, ffs. Not being in the money for anything ATM, I still watchlisterised it because want. Needless to say, it's sold by now.

You snooze, you open a thread on Autoshite, moaning about what is quintessentially your own fault, because you aren't man enough to admit it to yourself.

What really makes my piss boil lately is the moaning about 'high' prices on one side and on the other, if something really cheap turns up, it's all ooh, there must be something wrong, he must be hiding something terrible, moan, falter, rhubarb, tyres, airbags, other dismal meaningless shit. Typical metrosexual soy boy behaviour. Go and eat a sandwich, or fuck a duck, or do some fucking thing.

If you want a car, go and buy it and don't even think about not posting a collection thread with pez shot here, because I'm not British, thus have a sense of humour.

Because that's life. Nothing else is.

I want to be surrounded by trigger happy titty bar visiting Lego importers in old Datsun estates, pipe smokers driving sidevalves or timbered cars as daily commuters, 70s Lotus company car driving suits, Bavarians taking their 504s on holidays to fucking Morocco, of all places and square sausage exterminating foreigners in 50s Morris estates that have long since moved on from the safety blanket Ovlov rubbish.

Because anything else just bores the living shit out of me.

Can't find a sub 2k classic to your liking in England (I wonder how)?

Well, then drive one back from France. Or Germany. Or Bulgaria. Or Greece. Or fucking Tunis. Or some other godforsaken shithole.

Just don't give me this limpdicked bremoan Theresa May style bollocks.

For God's sake, harden the fuck up!

Want a sub 2k classic?

I bet you 2k that I can list a hundred of them right here in this thread within the next two hours.

100 adverts posted in 2 hours? If my maths is up to scratch then that's approximately..... 50 adverts an hour.

....And so it begins.

You give me the 2k and I'll post the cars.

The issue here is, not one of them would be bought by the moaning fraction anyway, because they don't have the fucking balls,

what little balls are actually required.

Cars pre 1990 at less than 2000€? Here we go, 2000 of them, pick yours.

The list keeps changing, but at this moment the first page contains such beauties as a Volvo 66, Zastava 750, Trabant, R5, Aldi quattto, Hanomag F20 and original yellow postal service Golf.

Shiply can fuck off too. If it drives then the minimum you need is a train ticket then a bus or taxi the rest of the way if you can't get a lift. Its the UK, its not like you are passing through the Sahara

Just before Christmas I was offered an 803 Minor "for between 1500 and 2000" (a wanky way to price a car but happens a lot). It was resprayed but needed the brightwork (included and some rechromed) putting back. There were a few other issues but the basic car was the soundest one I've ever seen, under 30000 from new too.

I offered a grand for it which was rejected, but I didn't need another car any way. 803s are a bit miserable, but not as bad as folks who've never driven them say. I have a 1098 I could have put in and that would have produced something very decent thing for under 2 grand. Early interiors are very nice and I liked this one muchly, ditto the much maligned but fine-to-use long waggly gear stick. Cheap old cars are out there. post-7547-0-59744600-1514716056_thumb.jpg

With a very few notable exceptions that seems to be lots of Mk2 Golfs , Passats and Audi 80s with the steering wheel in the wrong place for twice the price of better condition RHD examples that one doesn't have to suffer Ryanair to buy.

There's a good reason every Johnny Foreigner Sprinter going towards That Europe has a trailer loaded with some Merc or VAg shit , because even with the RHD issue old cars in Blighty are the cheapest anywhere.

The last 3 Mercs I sold ranging from £200 to £8,000 were heading across the channel .

Even supposedly scene tax shit like Cortinas are very little more expensive than nasty looking Tauneses with fucked up Cologne 2.0s, certainly not enough to risk not being able to sell again .

Cheap cars is something we do best in this country , so unless you are some sort of Francophile ( which sounds as perverted as it is) like Panhard or Junkman - Buy British( including foreign cars) You know it makes sense!

Whether you 100% agree with it or not (I mostly do), you have to admit that's a top quality rant there. Good work JM.

Compare the Minor that Cros has described above with the pile of Minor scraps and hopes at https://www.gumtree.com/p/other-cars/classic-car-exciting-project/1278438664

which is advertised for £1200. This junk pile will sell one daybut likely at a fraction of the price asked but if you want a pile of rough Minor parts go and have a look, make an offer etc.

The thing is you HAVE to ignore asking prices in adverts. Everything for sale "is what it is" and none of it is worth a fart more to you than you will pay.

You can't buy old cars with an Argos catalogue approach. Have a look, make an offer if you are still interested, walk away if you aren't.

As fucking usual Junkman has cravenly understated the imperative for acquiring proper transport; a perpetually tumescent cock.

When exactly has it become a problem to pass through the Sahara in some dilapidated old chod?

It's very easy to buy a proper classic car for a £2k budget, all you need to do is think outside the box and look at things that the general classic car populace turn their noses up at. Old Fords, Minis and VWs are wanked over en masse and unless you're happy to buy a rotten example and spend ages welding it up, forget them.

Ditto anything used in historic racing, as these attract a 'Goodwood tax' from people who think watching classic cars ragged around a track by millionaires is better than seeing them trundling around on the roads as they should be.

Standard is an unfashionable brand. Look at Standard 8/10s. Great little cars and vastly unappreciated, you can easily get a decent usable example for £2k. From the same company, Triumph Mayflowers are cheap if they're not mint. Morris Oxford/Cowley, A40/50/55 Cambridges and A40 Somersets - same thing. The general classic car populace are put off owning cars like this because they're unfashionable, not sporty in the slightest, mostly owned by giffers and the spares availability isn't great. Hence why so many gravitate towards Minors and MGBs instead.

I've had loads of classic cars and out of all of them, only two cost more than £2k.

This is why I like this thread and see the point of it:

Not only did I not know a Triumph Mayflower existed, I did not know they're so cheap. I occasionally look at the eBay thread but as the quantity is so large, I miss stuff.

Maybe there needs to be a eBay for pre 1990 and under 3k-4k thread. I.e. affordable classics. If such thread existed, I'd might have not ended up with MGB...

I have operated a Triumph Mayflower and they are a runty cuntlet of a car. The gear lever, however, is delightful. A slender chromium plated shaft with a lovely bakelite knob, it's a well known fact that this item alone cost as much to produce as two Kia Picantos. There's no better choice of motor car if you wish to shun all further human contact.
