That looks a good job Tom. Do you weld outside or in a workshop?

Thanks!

Outside on my driveway. Much prefer working outdoors. Better light and ventilation.

i had a later 1.5 almera, gave up all faith in the thing after i managed to spin it out twice...admittedly, i was going too fast for both corners, but in my defense the gearbox was giving up the ghost as was the clutch so i had to maintain speed as otherwise it was a faff trying to row it back up the gears.

For the money they are really well spec'd cars and it's just a shame nissan ruined the later ones with the whole chainstretch worry issue.

Yeah, the QG family of engines was noticably worse than the rock solid GA family IMHO.

thats good news, I need to get my arse into gear and start practicing. Was a little put off by doing it outside to be fair.

they were built in sunderland, had a 2005 n16 since 2006, diff bearings gave up at 30k so gearbox overhauled with primera diesel internals. brake calipers have a habit of siezing, to be fair i have only done the nearside twice. spend a bit of time underneath with wire brushes and underseal. still going strong.

I thought the n15s were indeed like a deep purple live album. Quite liked my dad's.

My n16 was shit.

My N16 is 'so so'. It had a hard life by the time I bought it.

I wish I spent the extra £ and bought the sporty looking 05 reg Corolla 1.6 vvti.

Had a look at the other side. It seemed slightly better initiallypost-19511-0-41803500-1537982930_thumb.jpg

But after I had attacked it with a grinder it turned out to be worse...post-19511-0-99505500-1537982994_thumb.jpg

Another Y tho. But I killed himpost-19511-0-43008400-1537983056_thumb.jpg

Now where do I start the rebuild? post-19511-0-74433400-1537983112_thumb.jpg

One step at a time. Have used much thicker metal than it left the factory with. Easier to weld and stronger.post-19511-0-78898700-1537983238_thumb.jpgpost-19511-0-41960600-1537983269_thumb.jpgpost-19511-0-53769200-1537983296_thumb.jpg

Had to remove the back seat and some trim in case it caught fire for this bit!post-19511-0-52808300-1537983334_thumb.jpgpost-19511-0-50588800-1537983377_thumb.jpg

Looks a bit better nowpost-19511-0-71327500-1537983413_thumb.jpg

Tomorrow's job, small plate on the front inner wing then wax the whole underside and box sections!

Are these N15s built in Japan?

N15 built in Japan, N16 built in Sunderland.

Very tidy work there. Well worthwhile for piece of mind.

After all the hassle involved in replacing the green one I want this one to last as long as possible. These are such good cars though, I think that once the rot is sorted, this thread will be over.
