15/02/18 Renault 30 Project - gone to a safe new home

I don't actually know until I look at them, probably at the weekend. They are dual line calipers on the front though,

Bet those are expensive though!

Posted

Probably around 75 quid a calliper. Main point is availability and pistons and seals kits can be obtained for less.

Well folks, I've got a 220 mile round trip to pick up the new front discs for the 30 coming up at the weekend!

My friend's wife seems to be a little less annoyed about the car being on her drive now that something is at long last actually being done with it. Can we get her to tolerate it another month?

Junkman says that the whole car will need > £4,000 spending on it before it is fit to see the road again.

My mate says forget painting it and it could be < £1k  8)

Looks like being a harlequin for the rest of it's life, not much chance of finding replacement panels anywhere, never mind in the same colour!

That's what the GGG usually drives for a washer. One way.

There is this age old stems with some colourful leaves on top/choclolate clumps in a fancy box combination.

It always works.

That's not what I said.

I said you'll throw 4k at it before you see that something was done to it.

I said to get it back on the road will cost you about 1,500.

If your mate says sub a bag, it might account for the price difference

between Manchester and West Yorkshire for the exact same effort.

Unless you spend 4k on it, like I said.

Although, you can get doors, quarter panels, sills, front longerons and a roof for

the cost of a trip to Germany and back, which would reduce the 4k estimate by a

not inconsiderable margin.

However, there is much chance of finding replacement panels in France, maybe even

in the same colour, but that won't save you from having to paint the car anyway,

if you don't like OMGRATLUK.

Small donation added to this worthy cause.

My only early memory of a R30 is of a P reg metallic brown one in 1976 overtaking my Dad's old Audi 100LS.

Exactly like I said, because I checked.

What we are dealing with here is an early 30.

That newfangled post '84 tosh won't fit.

Neither does the R20/Espace stuff.

Terribly sorry to piss on your parade, but phakt.

What is required are the bits for the calipers

with twin brake pipe feed, front and rear.

it's a fair cop guvnor :)

With thanks to Mr Sudsprint, the fund made it over the £200 mark this morning - should have made enough for a set of tyres now methinks - I will keep the fund open for donations - it's still got a huge amount of welding needed - many dozens of freezing mornings sitting on a cold concrete drive in store for me over the coming months!

£6 per can.  How many cans?  Probably 2 per corner, plus roof, bonnet and shuts = £42

It will look brill and not like a Polo Harlequin by Onslow

Ok, spoke a bit too soon, can't quite manage decent tyres yet, best option (ie non - Chinese death rings) are £68 each from Longstones (old sizes are generally a bit pricey, these don't seem too bad!) anybody got any experience of Barum Brilliantis tyres? Any good?

Longstone Tyres X 4: £272

The fund: £151       :-(

Alternatively, there is this cheap option from Black Circles:

https://www.blackcircles.com/order/tyres/search?&width=165&profile=80&rim=R14&delivery=1

Black circles Tyres x 4: £136

The fund: £151      :-D

What should I do? My head says go for the cheapest option on Black Circles just to get it mobile again

Opinions?

Budgets are fine.  We're not going to be smoking a track day, are we.  All it needs is to get to Shitefest Bulgaria and back.

Oh and make it 5 tyres as you'll be wanting a spare

Would do if I had a spare rim!

I had a set of 5 Renault Boutique Amil alloys, the tyres were a bit pricey for those, so I sold them to a R30 owner in Ireland to cover the cost of having this towed. Kind of regret it in a way, they were lovely, but there again, a project like this soon results in utter destitiution if you don't find a way to recoup some of the costs!

Stands me at a grand already, just to get it purchased, towed and running again, OD was maxed out in August, I'm slowly fighting back from that

The German hoarder will have wheels.  He has everything else.  Probably have tyres on too.  Ask him if any of the tyres would pass TÜV and as it is stricter on tyre depth than UK it might be the perfect outcome

Alternatively, wobble bolts and side exit exhaust.

I have ordered the Black Circles tyres

With thanks to all donors, the fund covered the cost pound - perfect, total including VAT and delivery was £151.

Sure, some will say I should have done other jobs first, but the object here is basically to get the thing MOBILE and MOVED, and that was never going to happen on 4 tyres full of cuts and flats!

Not sure about that one, new one on me. But why pay half money for something which is still going to need replacing anyways? Seems like paying more for everything unneccesarily imho?

Posted

Great work so far on the Renault. Would be a real result if you could claim that German example to help restore this one, but appreciate that the transport costs etc may rule it out.

Spotted a possible drivers side front wing on ebay for a £100 if that 's of any use?

Sorry but couldn't seam to link it directly but copied the listing number bellow instead.  :-)

He's not going to get rid of that in a hurry so could make an offer if it's better than the one you've got.

They also do it in a better can. The better the nozzle, the better the bodge.

Actually, front wings on mine is the one GOOD thing bodywork wise! Thanks anyways tho, definitely agree on price there - he'd take £30 for that all day long IMO!

Brilliance dear fellow! I have searched and searched for sills on ebay, without success! Now I know, I should have looked to Spain! As and when funds allow, I'll be ordering a pair  :)

Hi,

I have asked my fellow German horders. The first one answered and he has three doors, bonnet and tailgate available. I will find you the fourth door as well. Wheels might be available. No usable tyres though.

No prices yet. Do you want me to ask about more details?

Please bear in mind that there are two shapes of front mudguards. BTW: Those sills are located in Germany as well...

Well, I think this may be the next item to purchase

£100 for the doors

£100 for carriage I'm guessing

£200 total then

The seller looks to be not that far from Calais - wondering if there's any possibility of a shiter relay team to swing into action, should there be any willing cross-channel regulars?

Even if not, £50 a door, delivered, isn't that bad if they're as good as stated.

Plus, MOAR R30 Harlequin.

Would sills not be the best thing to buy? The current doors aren't going to stop it being roadworthy.

That's a good point, although Bigdan 30 says the sills aren't that bad

Pardon me for shoving my nose in, but those sills are crusty as fook.  No point in trying to patch or repair, you'll be there for a thousand years.

However, they do appear to be fairly simple single-curvature sheet, and could be made up from flat sheet quite easily, no need for genuine ones if there is no pressed double-curvatures.

Given the condition of the sills, I would want to get the car up in the air and do a decent corrosion assessment, see what panels are needed, which can be fabricated, and how easy/difficult any of it is.

The front subframe looks similarly past-it's-best, and may well be holed under some of that flaky rust.  Again, it may be possible to un-stitch the welds on it and put a new cut flat sheet on to re-make it without removing from the car.  The good thing about most 70's cars is that they generally had a lot less double-curvature on hidden on structural stuff, so repairing with flat sheet is much more viable than with more modern shite.
