40 years Rolling MOT exemption is Go!

Effectively, will every car be priced as a permanent MOT Pass, or will every car be priced as a potential MOT Fail?

 

 

Take a wild guess.

 

If I go to look at a pre-1978 car after this, and it isn't accompanied by an MOT certificate I will assume that it is fucked. And, no, the MOT test isn't infallible, but it's better than nothing. A lot better.

The other reason that I'm super excited about this is that it gives me hope that My A1 motorcycle licence can be upgraded to an unrestricted one by doing a training day as set out in this proposal:

Or better yet, how about doing away with the pointless A1 and let people get a full licence by passing on a 125, but maybe limiting them to, ooh, 33BHP for a certain period of time, say two years? This would stop them rushing out to buy a Ninjablade and becoming soup the first time they encounter a bend, yet allow them a reasonable amount of power to get some riding skillz with.

 

No, it'll never catch on.

If I'm selling priced as permanent pass, if I'm buying priced as a potential fail :) 

 

The Money I plan on spending on cars anyway as long as they see the current MOT out I'll be happy. £350 for a 318 BMW estate with 11 months MOT, erm yes I'll take it, if it doesn't see another MOT I'm still quids in - apart from petrol, that shit hurts especially after getting 40mpg out of a clio.

I still can't work out what'll happen with removing transferable plates from MOT exempt rotters. I wonder if the rules will stay as they are now - whack an MOT on it if it's been off the road for yonks, or transfer with no* issue if you've owned it a while and it has a recently lapsed ticket. Hmm.

I'm glad the Tories are looking out for the masses, relatively affluent people who keep >40 year old cars for a hobby really need a break.

Well I think this is a good thing and shame it isn't 30 years or was it 25 last time for the tax I can't remember.

 

Only got a other 7 years to wait till one of mine is free* but saying that there's a lot of happiness and moaning how many on here actually have a car over 40 that this will effect?

Isn't this just a pretty minor change that will have little impact on most people?

 

In all honest how many 40 year old cars are actually on the road (I'm not sure there's a quick way to do it on how many left). Financally a 300 quid focus that'll just run for a couple of years will still likely be cheaper motoring even with tax and mot. Given 80's cars are going up in value as retro things that are actually old are just likely to keep rising just as quickly.

 

Anyone with a 40 year old car is owning one as a hobby and as such probably not impacting road safety to any great extent I'd have thought. So this is good news for getting a few older cars back on the road.

It was 25 years last time. I was most pissed off when the Midget I had at the time got to about 24 before liebore got in & fucked me over with it.

I have two.... on a side note that 15% power to weight increase means the A35 is limited to an extra 4 bhp  :-P

I remember reading in an old Car Mechanics magazine the author discussing the MoT test. He said that with cars having a separate chassis, that was the only thing that mattered as the rest of the body could be literally hanging off, and he cited the old 'battleship' Humbers as a case in point. Not sure about the relevance to this but it's all grist to the mill.

I can see the 15% power increase being a stumbling block, how many minis or minors now boast an engine larger than they left the factory with or cortinas capris are now 2.0 and now not MOT/ Tax exempt

Luckily my Janspeed turbo was fitted in 1987 ;)

Thing is, how do you know a car has been modified before 1988 or prove it. My MGB has no history last the previous owner a couple of months back, so I have no idea what's in that engine! Could be performance cams as far as I know. Plus I have no base to which to base it against and, like most classic car owners, I've hardly driven it anyway.

 

In 43 years, the car has had many years it could possibly have been fiddled with!

Most costs, including VED disproportionately effect those on low incomes, I don't see how that can be argued against.

Btw, I'm one of the 'relatively affluent'.

The 15% is a possibility, more likely it'll be dropped/altered so we'll all tug our forlock & thank the gov't for being so generous or it'll be based on the 8 point rule still.

 

Far as i know imports will still have to pass an initial mot to give proof to be registered.

 

Must say 2 of mine have been off the road for 3 years so will I need to mot 1st, one of mine has been off the rd since the i0s can it must go back on the rd when I finish its resto?
